After the first 3 months of owning the BMW R1250 GS Adventure Rallye, I have listed and gone through the top five things that I don't like about my bike. 3 of them are minor, but the top two are definatley things I really can't stand.
Don't worry, the bottom line is this is the best bike on the road for my money, and coming soon I will go through the things I love about it !

Great video! Thanks for sharing your insights. I have exactly the same « problems » with the center stand as you have described. I also do have a lowered 1200GSA directly from the factory and it is often a pain on uneven underground. My only solution is to indeed put it on the centerstand. However there have been instances that I had to turn around the bike (driving) because I was simple not possible to get of the bike (because of the bike was leaning way too much to the right... Other than that, a great bike of course!

You forgot to add paint work and quality,I got rid of my 18k 2016 RT1200 due to paint blistering it had had a complete swing arm and final drive due to blistering the front engine casing was bubbling even though i had a fender extender on and ACF50,center stand was rusting and brake Banjo's rusting(Both not covered by warranty)BMW have just given up on quality control and thrown it over to cheaper imports.As for Garmin,they've just brought out the XT which to me is an unbranded Nav 6 but i hope it has a better software. Keep em coming and stay safe,Oh I resolved all issues by buying a Triumph Tiger

Hi from County Cavan! Really enjoyed that as I’m thinking about getting the same model. You’ve given me a lot to think over??🤔🤔 I’m toying between the normal GS and the GSA but one thing for sure after seeing your video is that I won’t be getting the SatNav.😂 Currently use my phone onboard my FJR Bluetoothed to my Sena intercom and it’s perfect. I’ll check out your other videos and sub you. Cheers, Dave.🏍

I use and will keep on using my cell phone for navigation. I use the BMW app to plot specific routes (or when it rains), WAZE to go to a specific destination (which informs about speed traps, cars on the shoulder, debris on the road, traffic jams and re-routes etc etc), Google Maps to find the nearest petrol station easily. This is old tech and criminally expensive. It is like a fax machine in times of e-mail.

I have had a GSA lowered for ten days now. I think they have resolved the side strand issue as mine is fine. I have had a GS in the past which had a Nav 6 which was the worst sat nav I have ever used. For the last two years have been using a Garmin XT mounted on a Honda using a ram mount and a secure locking unit. I5 took me half an hour to remove the ugly sat nav cradle that came with my new bike and replace it with the unit I had on the Honda. Had to buy a connector from Nippy Normans which cost £19.99. It wont work with the wizzy wheel but to be honest I never used it on my old GS and cannot see that I would ever want to. I think almost every manufacturer rips their customers ff with OEM parts not just BMW. I love your films and am about to hit Ireland next Monday to do half of the WAW after seeing your great films.

Totally agree, here in the USA the bike takes on persona of being Uber rich or snotty! Which I’m either of them! The bike is well designed and Thru years of development it’s become the benchmark! I use my 2018 1200 gsa as touring machine! I’m 6’3 , 275lbs - power lifter and this machine has plenty of power and the ergonomics are perfect for me to ride 8-10 hour ride. Also chaps my ass is you need BMW to clear off the maintenance reminder-$55.00 , I do my own maintenance. Great video, love to ride Ireland.

I agree completely on the Navigator, having used it on a 2015 RT, 2019 K1600GT, and now as I wait for delivery of my R1250GSA (2022), your video confirmed that the only reason I purchased the NAV6 is that I didn't want to look at the blank mount and think (ya cheap bastard) why didn't you buy it. I usually pipe Waze through the helmet. Additionally, I agree with the price comments, but I just can't seem to separate from the Brand reputation and quality.

G'day from Australia brother. Fully agree with you regarding the sat nav. I have a TomTom 550 hard wired to my Vstrom 1000 and it's so simple to use and half the bloody price. As for pricing, that will always be an issue for this particular bike as it is in high demand! I will be trading my big Vee for a GSA1250 later on as I just love how the beemer meets all of my requirements. We have a lot of ground to cover in Oz and that 30ltr tank will come in handy, not to mention the great comfort levels of the bike. The image factor. Who gives a shit what others think! You buy and ride the machine for YOUR pleasure, no-one else's. Leave the image bullshit to H-D. Interesting video as my mate was wondering if a low suspension model was available as he is a little on the shorter side. Wearing high heels is not an option,lol! Subbed brother, stay riding.

I just use the cheap bracket out of China and use my iPhone with the Motorrad app, $40 against $1,300 here in Australia, it’s a no brainer. In Oz long trips are pretty much a no GPS affair and around town where you might need help, the phone works beautifully, plus the phone bracket has two usb outlets that draw power the same way the Garmin would, no need to change plugs around etc.

Interesting video - I am awaiting my new lowered Rallye and will get the side stand cut down, I had the same problem with my first BMW, a 2014 1200LC with lowered suspension, it went over three times, twice ion the wind and once a gentle nudge from a car…I have a friend who will cut out a section and resell the foot back on…I guess the amount to take out will be the difference between the standard and lowered seat heights but will experiment before he gets the cutting gear out! Safe riding…

had a 2019 1250 GS. Great bike when it wasn't in the shop...leaky brake calipers that took 3 weeks to get replaced, 3 different times when there was some malfunction "Spring strut adjustment faulty" "Fault in engine control". One I was on a week long trip and had to find a BMW dealer and it took 24 hours to get me back on the road. Loved many things about the bike but for a $23K bike to have so many problems in the first 5k miles was ridiculous. Traded it

I have the same BMW Nav V1, and completely agree with your comments. It is very poor, and a continuous source of frustration.Particularly when trying to plan a trip with multiple waypoints, or specific route choices. To make matters worse, none of the tutorial videos to show you how to master it, are now available on the Garmin /basecamp website. It almost feels like it is not being properly supported by Garmin anymore. It leaves you feeling that you’ve been cheated out of £600+, and worse SO much valuable time.
@MCIreland99
@MCIreland99 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, I found it overly complicated and none of the online training was very comprehensive. Ive heard some people say that after BMW signed the exclusive contract with Garmin they became unhappy that Garmin focused more on hardware development instead of user experience/software which seems to line up with my experience. I found the Garmin is faster but complicated but the TomTom is sooo easy to use but slightly slower to load but once running is fine. I recently updated my TomTom from the Rider 410 to the 550 and all I had to do was log in to the new 550 and it automatically loaded all my routes and POI's etc. So I know I can safely keep building POI's in my TomTom and each new system I get over the years it all just carries over with no fiddling around.

I'm with you on the nav, it's way too daffy. You have to go into categories, scroll down to Towns then you can access your destination directly. How did you manage to have the full keyboard on yours? I was in a dealers some while ago and he was using the sidestand length as the easiest way to tell if the bike was a lowered version. I suspect he was only looking at the difference between the heel peg and the foot, (it'll be easier to spot rather than looking at the whole length). I presume the centre stand is shorter too? I think the price is the hardest pill to swallow when it comes to this bike. I just priced out a fully loaded GS1250A HP and with side panniers it is $33577 Canadian vs $15900 for a brand new Yamaha Super Tenere ES with side panniers. The BMW may be a better bike but the Yamaha is arguably the most reliable adventure bike on the market. If money was no option I would buy the GS but I cant even begin to justify the increased cost over the other options out there. Beautiful bike though, just wish I could afford it!

Let’s face it, one usually has to be older to be able to afford it, in addition to being able to handle it across road, dirt, gravel, sand, mud, etc. It’s so well-rounded, but only if the rider is. Typically that takes time-age, but not always.

Interesting. I’ve recently picked up my bike, and have to agree with you regarding the GPS, it’s far too elaborate, but there’s no alternative if you want to access all the info. I do feel that the paintwork could be better, I have already scuffed the right hand tank side, just by using a Kevlar suit. Very annoying. I consider these items should be standard free options, illuminated controls, heated seat, electric screen or knob left hand side, large screen, waterproof compartment with power, comfort seat, tilting tft screen, I would like self cancelling indicators. Possibility to fit something to bars slightly wider than panniers for filtering in heavy traffic rather than clenched buttocks. Just a few things off top of head,, more if I thought about it. Agree entirely with your comments about finding towns on garmin sat nav, try it in France where there lots of towns with similar names and might be 600 miles apart. Minor point, drive a car, ride a bike? Sorry! Ah yes, cup holder for trips to Starbucks to confirm stereotype BMW owner or maybe Harley.

You can use the BMW connect for routes to the TFT, but I found it's a bit laggy and you will pass a turnoff before it tells you your on it. But give it a go, you may have better success with it. Connect your phone via Bluetooth to the Bike. Download the BMW Connect App on your phone. On the App go to Rides section. On the Bike TFT go to navigation and you should be able to send a route from your phone to your TFT.

I had been using the TomTom for years before getting the Nav VI, so when I realized I didn't like it, it made more sense for me to go back to the TomTom that I knew so well especially when any Sat Nav you pick other than the Navigator's will mean you lose the wiz wheel control, but to be honest I found I wasn't using the wiz wheel anyway with the Nav VI and the touchscreen on the TomTom is very user friendly.

According to BMW's configurator, the seat hight reduction comes with an "appropriately shorter side stand". Maybe they just forgot to mount it. But one thing that me really pisses me off is that the bikes come either with Bridgestone or Michelin tyres and there is no way you may chose your tyres (except road or off-road). Regarding the NavVI it is much easier to use Garmin's Smart Link App to send your destination to the NavVI from your smartphone.

Hi Jean, yes Ive heard it's suppose to be shorter, but one of my subscribers sent me a photo of their stand on their lowered GSA and it does look slightly different to mine, so I think a wrong stand may have ended up on my bike somehow. not a problem now as I had it cut 1cm shorter and re-welded and it's perfick now !. Hi there, very interesting vlog, however, not sure I agree on everything. Can you say you hate the GSA when talking about the Garmin, when it’s used on other BMWs also? And the issue with the side stand on the Low, I don’t think you re correct there, I have a Low and I think they have shortened it, if you compare it with a regular height GSA there’s a difference. I’m not arguing matey, just pointing out a few things.
@MCIreland99
@MCIreland99 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, It would be a dull world if we all agreed with each other !. On the Garmin, I added it in to the dislikes as BMW effectively try and railroad it's customers into taking the Garmin. If I want my GS to fully integrate with a sat nav, then it's the Navigator or nothing so it's integral to the bike. I understand other BMW's are in the same position but the episode is specific to my experience with my bike. On the Stand, yes your right about the stand, I have had several subscribers say the same that they have a shorter stand on their lowered GS and I think that there may have been an issue with mine that it either got the wrong stand at the factory or the dealership may have swapped it out for some reason, my bike was an ex Demo from my local dealership and I have a sneaky suspicion something may have happened during a test ride and they swapped it out. When I first got the bike it was very precarious when on the side stand so I had to do something. Doesn't matter now anyway as I have it sorted and Im very happy with it now.

Hard to say, it's more about inside leg length I think. If you have about 31" or more inside leg your probably ok with Standard. Once your under 30" inside leg then a lower suspension GS is probably better. I have a 29" inside leg and I definitely appreciate the lower version, my last GS was standard but I put an extra low comfort seat on and was still on my toes. With the lower suspension and seat in low position on the LC, I can get 95% of my feet down.

Side stand: as far as I know a factory lowered GSA comes with a proper and adjusted side stand; not being so would be outrageous for this price tag. Did you google that information and/or talked to your dealer?

Yep, I spoke to the dealer and they advised the stand on the GS and the GSA is the same. BUT one of my subscribers sent me the measurements of his stand and it was different ! SO I think my dealer was incorrect and somehow a standard GS stand ended up on my GSA. In the end I had a place just cut 1cm out of it and weld and respray it and that resolved it. You'd never know it was welded and it is now perfectly leans over without feeling precarious.

Very good review of the Navigator. Just ordered a new Low Chassis GSA. I'll avoid the Navigator. I've seen a cradle adaptor to fit your phone where the Nav would go and it wirelessly charges your too. Anyone tried one? Also, from BMW site: "The lowered suspension with shorter spring elements results in a reduced seat height of only 840/860 millimetres. This means that even smaller riders can enjoy improved stability and have better control over their machine when manoeuvring. The centre and side stands are appropriately shorter. The lowered suspension can only be ordered with the optional equipment Dynamic ESA ." I'll let you know about the side stand when mine arrives. Cheers for the info'.

Overheating due to good weather wont happen here in Ireland Im afraid ! :) too cold and wet !. A sat Nav will keep to your exact route if you save it as a track instead of a route. The difference is how a sat nav handles the route if you deviate from it. On my trip this year to southern peninsulas of Ireland I used the Nav VI, if I deviated from my Track it would just cancel the track and then re-calculate a route straight to my destination. With a TomTom, if you deviate from the Track it will try re-route you back to the nearest point of your original track. This is the best solution because you can stay on your planned track but if you want to explore a little and you see something interesting on the day, then you can do that knowing when your finished the TomTom will then show you the way back to your original Track.

@MCIreland99
@MCIreland99 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for your feedback. Your right, I don't go off road if I can help it, but lets be honest, neither do 90% of Adventure bike owners (Most "off roaders" wont buy a GS to go off road, While it is capable in the right hands, generally it's too big and heavy especially for a novice, they would buy trail bike in a 250 or 400). People buy a GS because they like them and if the road happens to change they have something that can manage it. Just like most people who are not Moto GP Racers buy BMW S1000RR's or R1's or Fireblades don't race but they buy these hyper bikes anyway even though they can't race them on public streets, and city moms buy huge 4x4 SUV's to take the kids to school. People like what they like. It terms of a 1600, I hired a K1600 for a few weeks and i didn't like it. Too heavy a bike, it's fine when moving but it's a lot of bike when not moving and very awkward in tight single lanes if you need to turn around. The new 1200 RT is actually harder to get your feet down than the GS as the seat is so wide. Also, whilst I don't go off road, I do a lot of exploring down "Boreens" which are very narrow twin tracks that are often full of gravel, mud, potholes and thorn bushes that are not suitable for fully faired bikes. I agree with you about BMW Car Drivers, I do feel they are in general aggressive but I don't want to paint all of them like that, I am sure a lot of it is just a perception. For me, the GS is the best all round bike that suits the Irish roads and my driving requirements and can handle all situations.
