BIG tip that I have.... On the Japanese models, and others with an oil drain plug on the bottom of the case, check to see if anyone ever over-tightened that drain bolt. You'll see the huge gob of JB Weld they try to stop the oil leak with. They hope you'll just rip it down the street for a ride and not ride it for the half n hour it'll take for that JB Weld to start falling off... I've seen MANY YZ's and KX's with broken cases from that oil drain bolt.

I got a job and ever since I started making my own money, I made it my goal to buy myself a dirt bike. Was working at McDonald's for awhile but got fired so couldn't get a bike for a bit. Got another job in July at Tim Horton's (I'm 19 and I live at home) and I put my goal of buying a bike back into place. I bought my first ever bike last October. It's street legal too. 2004 Suzuki DR650. Went to the guy's house with my dad and his buddy to look at the bike and it was clean (still is but I'm going to give it an even better cleaning before riding it this year), in great condition and the guy gave us details about it. I'm not experienced in bikes as this is my first ever bike (that I purchased myself but my dad bought me two bikes in the past) but the bike looked amazing. He started it and it ran good. While the guy selling the bike was away from us for a bit, we discussed the price I should offer him. Offered him 400$ less than what he was asking and he said it's mine if I pay cash. He drove the bike to my dad's place the next day and I paid him cash. I will be getting my license to drive the bike on the road this year and I'll be bringing it to my mom's place and I'll be getting my stepdad to show me how to work on it (I want to keep it in the condition it was in when I bought it). I worked my ass off all night (I have a nighttime job) and it paid off. I got my own bike now and I couldn't be anymore proud. I'm really looking forward to driving it this year.

I recently did a jackpot purchase on a 2016 WR450F. Seller had lots of high-dollar toys in his garage, all very clean and shiny. Bike was 4 years old but completely immaculate, had several tasteful aftermarket add-ons that I would have added myself anyway, plus the $300 power tuner and a few new replacement parts. Best thing is, he was asking at least $1000 less than he should have been asking for this particular machine... I think he wanted to make a quick sale and I was happy to oblige. Also, some people replace perfectly good stock levers with aftermarket pieces -- the presence of an aftermarket lever does not mean that the previous lever was broken off when it hit the ground.

Here’s some others: ask if they have a stand or ratio cups or any extra oil filters/oil/tubes to go with the bike. Or asking if they have a stand you can put the bike on to take a look. If they don’t have a stand, I’d be very skeptical and check everything carefully because maintenance is probably not their priority. Sure some people take it to the dealer, but this is good info to know. A bike that’s been cared for by a smart owner, will often have these extras. Even if they don’t want to sell the stand/parts/etc, it’s a good test to know who you’re buying from. And you might score some routine maintenance parts.

Couple more suggestions... bring a zip tie or, and you'll laugh. I have a 10ml lab syringe with clear tubing attached. When I check the oil I dip that tube in and extract some oil... Why you ask. Sellers know that if you add new oil it will sit on top of the milkshake. 10" zip tie you can wiggle it into the oil and see if its milky. also check head bolts, valve cover screws, side covers...chain tension... If they did upper or lower work. Bolts will show wear...also check the bottom frame rails.. Buddy of mine shows with with the syringe and a bore camera... and his riding boots. since he learned a lesson from a mod...the compression was such his foot slipped off the kick and removed skin from his ankle up...

Sometimes I find a bike with only 3-4 hours on it. But I worry about buying them, because they are like 90% of the price of a new one, and I always wonder why anyone would sell a bike after only 3-4 hours? Perhaps they accidently run it without an air filter or something? It almost feels safer to buy a bike with 80 hours on it, that gives you the impression that it was really good taken care of. Sometimes you can almost tell by a guy's garage. It looks like he did nothing but dirt bike service for the last 40 years and everything looks so clean and professional.

i sort of have to disagree on one thing. i cant keep my room clean for more than a week, i shave once a month out of pure laziness, my area at work is a disaster and the interior of my truck gets clogged up badly. however i keep my bike as clean as possible. oil changes at half the recommended hours, i brush the chain off and lube it up as soon as i get back from the track when i put it away and i detail clean it with a pressure washer. its an 18 yz250f i bought it new a year ago and even with some beginner marks on the plastics from falling, it still looks immaculate with almost 40 hours on it, and i hear it all the time from people asking about the bike. i dont baby it either, its been caked with 50lbs of mud a number of times. my neighbor on the other hand has a 16 KTM 300xcw, and while he has a nice clean home, nice clean vehicles, and leaves no messes anywhere, he lets his bike stay dirty and hardly cares about it. Even after he finally got a pressure washer last year it looks like crap and beat up even though its got less hours than my bike and hes had it two years longer
