Dante's peak is the one movie which portrayed volcano eruption as accurate as it can be, bc director Rodger Donaldson was former geologist, and they had three USGS consultants. The final pyroclastic eruption, as it was said in director's commentary, when the volcanologists watched that scene, they did not believed it was CGI. They thought they somehow had taken actual footage and put it into movie. So Dante's peak eruption scene should've been number 1 in this list as the most accurate one.

Yep
@CortexNewsService Жыл бұрын
yeah, the only thing that was inaccurate was the leads being able to survive by going into a mine. Otherwise... yeah, that's what happens with those kinds of eruptions.
@slicknik0073 ай бұрын
The fast flowing lava is the one thing I can say was scientifically inaccurate. I know they made it like that for the purpose of entertainment, but Dante's Peak is a stratovolcano like St. Helens. Those types of volcanoes are high in silica, so they are very thick and slow moving. Shield volcanoes like the ones in Hawaii have the fast moving lava flows depicted in the movie
Fun fact: Dante's Peak's pyroclastic flow scene is the most infamous volcanic explosion pyroclastic flow scene in the cinematic world.

Beast effects: Pompeii - coment 2012 - like
@cauhaibaoaov3 жыл бұрын
You should know that these are 2 different effects, the effect of pompeii is at night, easier to implement than the daytime effect of 2012, especially the release time of the 2 movies is 5 years apart, Pompeii is not ever compared with 2012. Even now, it's hard to have a movie comparable to 2012 about its epic effect...

I tend to have a lot of issues with volcanic eruptions as depicted in movies, especially the lower budget or day-time TV movies. Blockbusters are not immune to this, either. Film directors are kind of caught between a realistic portrayal of an eruption and the expectations of the thrill-seeking audience, and this leads them to put in things that ruins the realism. The 'Supervolcano' mini-series managed to avoid this pitfall, depicting the fictional Yellowstone eruption as eruptions coming from many vents, rather than the more spectacular ( and fantastical) single massive explosion from one central vent. 'Volcano', too, managed to eschew the sensational trap, though its depiction of stopping a lava flow down a street was far-fetched. The only time humans have effectively deflected a lava flow happened at Heimey in Iceland, and that was simply because they had an unlimited supply of seawater to pump on the flow edge and cool it enough to build a bank of solid rock strong enough to deflect the lava. As for stopping it, well nothing humans could do would have stopped it: the flow stopped because the volcano stopped pumping it out. 'Dante's Peak' is a little iffy- on the whole, its depiction of a Cascade volcano's sudden awakening after centuries of dormancy is reasonably accurate, but for a few things. One is that no hot spring will heat up from bathing temperature to boiling point in one or two seconds: were that to happen it would mean magma was in direct contact with the water, and would result in a steam explosion! The second issue is that a Cascades style volcano can not form the kinds of lava flows the film depicts. That kind of fluid lava is basaltic, and associated with Hawaii, not the Cascades. At best, a Cascades lava flow would be slow moving and rubbly ( an A'a flow), but is more likely to be a creeping cliff like from of large blocks. The acid lake scenes I'm not sure about,: I know that volcanic lakes can have a pH similar to that of car battery acid, But I doubt that the concentrations would be high enough to kill a person through chemical burns, without dissolving her clothing completely first. I'd like to think you could escape a Pyroclastic flow by getting as far and deep underground as you can get, but experts say this is not possible, so the mine escape thing is a non-starter, too. It's a great shame, given that we have such a detailed description of the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius, that this film's maker succumbed to temptation in sensationalising the eruption to please film-goers. As well as adding fictitious fireballs ( which the director confesses were his own addition) A tsunami was added... something that the letters of Pliny the Younger did not mention, and, as far as I know, there is no archaeological evidence of. Building destruction was caused by earth tremors and roof collapse caused by the weight of ash and pumice accumulating on them: many buildings stand to two stories high in the ancient town of Pompeii. I will say very little about '2012', for a more realistic ( if far less spectacular) depiction of a super-eruption, refer to my remarks on 'Super-volcano'. What I will say is that the airport scene was way, way off the realism chart. Simple ash clouds would not have killed the staff in the air traffic control tower that way: in fact, if the windows were properly sealed, very little ash would have got inside. Only the dreaded pyroclastic flow would have killed the people in the airport, and no matter how big an eruption Yellowstone put out, no pyroclastic flow it produced could reach that far. Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin have a lot to answer for!
@brunomilocchi38973 жыл бұрын
About the underground thing in Dante's Peak needed to escape from the flow, it is actually possible to survive that way. Granted I'm no expert, but I saw a video talking about how the only prisoner to survive a volcanic eruption nearby, was coincidentally located in the deepest cell. When the pyroclastic flow passed he got pretty severe burns, but he did make it out alive. That said, it appears that the protagonists of Dante's Peak didn't get that far deep, so I guess your point still stands.

Well, you can't really expect every filmmaker on the planet to be super-realistic about how a volcano erupts, can you? I mean, I've seen several videos on certain volcanic eruptions, and I'm still amazed at the Yellowstone eruption in 2012. And that's not because of realism, mind you. No, it's because of how massive it looks, as well as the cinematography. Normally I like to suspend my disbelief when watching certain films like 2012, as well as Moonfall (both were directed by Roland Emmerich, mind you). You don't have to pay much attention to the science in order to watch these types of films. But so long as it looks great, and you can follow the action.
