It's a mixed bag in the torpedo room. Background story: when rack space in berthing is full, additional racks are set up in the torpedo room. The good side is that it's a good temperature and you almost never have to hot rack in there. Down side is the sanitary pump is under the room and people tend to work out/chill down in the room, so sleep is occasionally interrupted. Tidbit is I slept in the rack that was directly above the charcoal filter on deployment, so my rack smelled like shit for 7 months 😁

You are right JT, earning your dolphins is a major undertaking. You will be learning about every major system on that sub - probably while mess cooking with every waking moment you have to study. You're not even allowed to watch movies or stand around. Everyone knows you're a nube and they expect you to be working on your quals. Sub school is only the beginning, mostly just an overview of submarine life. You start with the basic systems, IE trim and drain. Then you get your diagrams (we had "Tabs") and go through the boat finding all the components. Anyone who has time, will help you out personally. When you think you're ready, you go to an enlisted rate that actually works on that system. They ask you questions and take you around pointing at valves, tanks, breakers - whatever pertains to the system you're studying. If they are satisfied you know what you're talking about, they sign off on your "Qual Card" for that system. Next, you would go to either a chief or an officer and again they will go even more in depth. Many times, I would go for a check out and get turned away because I didn't study enough. After you get two signatures on every system and the qual card is completely filled out, you go in front of a board consisting of the captain, officers, and chiefs. They fire questions at you and you have to discuss most of the systems on board at length. They especially hone in on those that pertain to your rate. Cook, storekeeper (that was me), it doesn't matter. You still have to learn these systems. It took me two full patrols to get my dolphins. Some guys who were super smart and literally knowledge sponges, did it in one. Submarines are serious business and everyone knows that death is just outside that pressure hull. But, it is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do in your life. Maybe you've heard the phrase, "Submariners volunteered twice"

Engineer Rates- DC/HT/MR/MM/EM/EN/GSE/GSM If you want to be on small boys only ie (Destroyers/Crusiers) choose GSM/GSE they are the main propulsion on those ships. Repair/DC division is the Damage Controlman (my rate) HT and MR are the flying squad, they are the ones who deal with all shipboard fires/floods/toxic gas/hazmat spills. MM/EN are the aux engineers ie small boat engine maintenance, A/C, steering, anchor motor maintenance, and if you are on a CVN you can be assigned to the Nukes. The EM rate is the Electricians Engineer Rates are get the shaft alot when everyone else is going home your on board working and getting the ship ready, but at the same time it is a tight community, and if you are a DC everyone has to learn your rate you are a huge part of the navy.

My dad has always been the master of the 1000 mile state and a man of few words. He LOVED being on Subs. He was a weapons officer and he says his biggest regret was not doing his full 20 active duty on Subs. But people on subs are definitely a breed, and a rare one at that.

Did 10 years as a DP Tech. 1990-2000. I ran and programmed many computer systems that held less data than your current phone and were big as rooms. I never saw sea. Not one day in ten years did I go to sea. I tried, USS Enterprise, dang day dock overhaul. Enjoy your Navy. I’d do it again if I could.

Engineman Main Prop Gators , the whole portion under MM + the gear heads fits us completely. Long hours , no sun or fresh air. Your life in port and at sea revolves around the ship, and your always covered in dirt, grease, oil, and fuel, hence why people think we are always pissed off. Hotest we saw in the Main space was 148 while 20 feet under the waterline in the gulf. The coveralls (also known as Steamers) you guys were taking about are for fighting a fire, a ruptured steam pipe or water main. They are fire retardant. We're the first on the scene to fight it until the repair lockers take over. Good video guys. Much love to my fellow Snipes

I was an SH and loved it. I was a ships barber a few times and sucked so that was bad. My 2nd ship went through (USS Reuben James FFG-57) overhaul in Peral Harbor and we litterally lived on Ford Island. And my job then was to take all the bedding from when the crew on duty slept and the berthing barge and wash them a few times a week on a ship that had women on it. I went to WT A School snd go dropped then went to the flet as a deck seamen that totally sucked, you are right about that, chipping paint sucks. But getting back t4o being an SH, oneTY time we has a big dungaree inspection for Supply, and I was supervisor in charge of laundry, so I personally pressed the dungaree uniforms for 5 out of 6 MS1's and one brought a gallon of ice cream for me to enjoy, so I had all the other SHes enjoy the ice cream too. They did their jobs why hog all the ice cream for ourselves?

I was a PN - Personnelman (Rate before PS) and I was with a Squadron. We never dealt with Financial issues. That lovely job fell to the DK’s (Dispersing Clerks). My job as a PN with VS-30 was very easy. We had White Liberty Cards, rarely pulled Duty, wore White Flight-deck Jerseys, and when on shore we worked 8 hour shifts and went home. I struck PN from Undes Airman and did OJT on my time off during deployment after wearing my Turd Shirt on Deck. Hated Tie-down Chains and washing Birds. Undes Airman, all Undes should be in the top 1 worst jobs! And I worked TAD in Ships Laundry before moving to the deck. This was during Desert Storm....hotter in certain spots in Laundry than on FD imho

I wouldn't wish being an ABE on my worst enemy, but you have to respect them. With regards to the heat- on the one hand while I roasted on the flight deck there were at least interesting things to see and some shade in the hangar deck but we had it worse sometime because instead of the heat we had to stand there in the pouring rain.

There it is MM depending where you are when your cruising it can be up to 120 degrees HUMID. Being surrounded by steam and steam leaks don't help. Plus the fact that the only ventilation you have is from the hot ass air outside coming in through fans. On our Westpac our Box Chief made us put cheesecloth on the ducting so it would stop all the sand from coming into the MMR but afterwards it restricted so much air flow box went up 10 degrees. Well that shit didn't last more than one 6 hour watch. LMAO I'm rolf thinking about this moment. MM3 Betancur turned the ventilation off, sprayed all the cheesecloth ducting with soapy water, then kicked the ventilation back on. The entire MMR was covered in bubbles within hours.... then the BOX Officer came down to check logs! Cool thing is he was a nuke fresh out of the Academy and just laughed said we were crazy and left. Shortly afterwards Box Chief came down... and yeh not same story. He tore us a new one but we won the war... THAT WAS THE END OF THE CHEESECLOTH!!!! Being an MM is definitely tough if you cant handle that heat or not mechanically inclined. But if you learn while your in it's really easy to get out, head to Texas, fuck school and get a plant operator job making $100,000-$150,000 a year with no degree just with the operating experience in the service. I'm living proof that it's possible.

The bad part of being on a carrier is you’re on a carrier. There is NOTHING like the camaraderie of submarines. I was an MM (A div) on subs in the 70’s. If you’re selected for subs, you know you’re amongst the most intelligent the Navy has. Hard work? YES. Outstanding training for perseverance to get through life’s tough moments. The all-nighters in college were a piece of cake.

Yay sub MM(A) basically combine 3 of the ten worst rates (SUB/MM /HT). and the dryer that you work next to? It catches on fire twice a month. Have to Run the diesel for a drill or casualty? Cut the ventilation (fans) for rig for reduced electrical and crank the heat up to 110 for 3 hours or so (drill) or for like a few hours a day a week who knows depends on the casualty and severity. Oh and the DC gear you used to fight that casualty somebody got to do maintenance on it. And the equipment that broke causing the shitstorm you probably own it. A gang and E div on a submarine are the two worst rates ever created. Learned alot played hard it was a fun ride (you literally can sleep anywhere in any condition after doing it long enough too) Probably the best part though is there is legitimately not enough time off work to spend the money you earn.

Worst heat i experienced was in Afghanistan during the summer months. I was an Army Artilleryman digging sandbags in 120 degree heat with full battle rattle. (for those unfamiliar with army jargon: Full Battle Rattle is your Kevlar helmet, IOTV with a full compliment of about six 30-round magazines (5.56) and IFAK, camelbak, ballistic eye protection, flame retardant gloves, and M4) For some reason, my platoon Sergeant was a bit of a dick, so he refused to let us take our uniform tops off to cool down. Every now and then we would also get TIC calls (Troops in Contact). So we would drop what we're doing and ready about 5 rounds of 155mm HE (or 5 RAP rounds depending on how far away they are), and fire in support as soon as we get the word. Best job i ever had. Hands down.

Currently I've enlisted into the navy and gotten my ship date and everything I am a girl and I am going to be going onto a submarine as soon as I get out of MM school. Before even going in I thought long and hard about what I wanted to do and realized that I was really excited to go on a submarine one thing my recruiter told me and a lot of other people was that unless I wanted to really do it I shouldn't do it. I'm actually very happy about getting to do this job and even if it is hard being a female I am doing it to serve my country with something I know and would love to expand on.

Being an MM is tough but fun. I served only on a carrier, I had a family member who was a MM officer on a sub and this is what I can tell you. The no light thing will only bother you if you dont stay active, so get a workout in everyday. Apparently the food on the sub is great! Less mouths more of a family setting. Good luck with you service.

I joined as a CS on a sub and it definitely sucked. It has its perks tho. I didn't plan on being a CS tho, I was homeless at the time I was enlisting and all the jobs I wanted had me on a waiting period of at least 6mo out. So I just said fuck it, give me the first thing to go. You do get sub and sea pay as long as you're attached to a boat. The one perk of being a cook, is you don't have to hot rack.

DC is a engineering rate but different then all of other engineering all of our equipment is in engineering spaces and out. Flying squad, Fire marshal, crash and smash, DCTT, anything that has to do with signing PQS (Prepare for dink study because we aint signin shit) DCMA inspections, any drill inspection. Quality of life is shit.
