Just a couple quick, easy to remember tips about lunar cycles and tides (since you said you don't have the best understanding of them). Lunar cycles are mainly important because the tides tend to be more extreme (at their highest and lowest) during both full and new moons. Those extreme tides mean more (and faster) current flow in between. Of the two, new moons are usually better for morning fishing, because during a full moon (if it's not overcast) the fish will use the extra light to feed all night. This usually means a slower bite the next morning, but it tends to pick up tremendously that afternoon. Conversely, full moons make for fantastic night fishing! The predators sit on the bottom and pick off the bait using their silhouettes. As for which tides are best, people will argue endlessly, but the super simplified version is that if you're fishing in bays, inlets, etc. during the summer, incoming tides tend to be better. This is because the cooler, deeper water from the gulf is getting pushed inland. This will also increase the dissolved oxygen in the water, often triggering fish to feed. In the winter it's exactly opposite. The shallower water that has been warmed by the sun all day pushes deeper with the outgoing tide, again making fish more comfortable and active... meaning they will usually feed more. This is usually less important in the gulf (or ocean for those on the east coast). However, fishing near inlets or passes is usually a very good idea during outgoing tides because bait fish tend to get carried out with the current. The fish we are after are very well aware of this and will tend to wait to ambush them nearby. Hope that helps at least a couple folks! It got a little longer than I intended, but in fairness, there is a lot of info packed in there!

There are several of us who like to fish the pier when we come down but we are just kinda left to chance. Is it feasible to show certain areas of the pier and what you can expect to catch there. Not wanting secrets, just kinda, “If you want this target species your best bet is this area off the pier.” GSP

Nice info for everyone! I have most of those apps, but the one I find most useful is one called fishing and hunting solunar time. Has weather, wind, tides, and even gives a fishing day rating based on conditions. Very handy and typically the only app ill check before going out. Good luck on the road to 10k!

Alabama licenses are unusual in that they always expire/renew on September 1st, no matter when you purchase them. It's at least easy to remember, but makes it a little frustrating to pay full price if you need one in mid-July.

Great job Brad! I had to keep pausing to download the apps. 😆. You should do a quick vid on recommended hook sizes for different fishing situations. Amateurs like me need a little help... hook's too big... the small fish rob you... too small... the big ones bend/break. Thanks man!

@TheMtGRogue 2 жыл бұрын
Fish Rules really is incredibly handy. Not only does it give you info on open/closed seasons, but also size limits, bag limits, any special rules for that species (e.g. no treble hooks with natural bait is a common one), alternate names... essentially everything you would actually ever need to know. Even better, it's fantastic for species identification. It has multiple pictures for most species (they don't make this super obvious, but try scrolling left or right on the actual photo for a species like redfish, which is listed as red drum), often including little diagrams to help differentiate commonly mixed up species.

I'd love to see Brad's take on this too. I recently started limiting myself to what I can carry in my small backpack, basically meaning one 3400 sized tray and one 3600 (I could honestly squeeze in one more 3600, but the limitation is kind of the point... and, of course, there is extra room in the bag for spools of leader, a popping cork or two, some packs of soft plastics, etc.). I've found that it forces me to think through each trip more thoroughly and also learn how to not only be better with each lure, but also learn to use them in new ways. I would HIGHLY recommend trying this approach out, even if only for a couple of trips. You'll be surprised at how resourceful you become. I know plenty will be hesitant, but I can guarantee you that I am just as ready for anything that moves through as the guy with the old school, giant 12 tray tacklebox full of crap he'll never use.
