As we contemplate the sprawling tapestry of wealth and legacy woven into the social fabric of Massachusetts, it becomes clear that certain communities stand out as bastions of “old money” - that rarefied echelon of the financial stratosphere…
Comprising those whose wealth stretches back generations, or even centuries, with roots in industries, politics, and social spheres that have imbued their patrician class with a certain air of exclusivity.
It is within this context of coins and culture that we explore the communities that have emerged as the definitive cradles of old money in Massachusetts.

7:40 #4 Weston
9:44 #5 Wellesley
11:29 #6 Winchester
13:16 #7 Manchester-By-The-Sea
-------------
We must first turn our attention to Beacon Hill, Boston.
The story of Beacon Hill is one of the most compelling tales of the American aristocracy, a story that begins in the early 19th century when Boston was rapidly emerging as a center of commerce and industry.
Seeking to establish a permanent residence befitting their status, the old money families of Boston (the so-called ‘Boston Brahmins’) began to gravitate towards the hill, with its commanding views of the city and its enviable location in the heart of Boston’s downtown.
Thus, if you are thinking of ‘old money’ in Massachusetts’ biggest city and capital, the first thing you should think is “Beacon Hill”.
Next we travel upon the sun-soaked shores of Nantucket Island, a place that seems to exist outside of time, a place where the sands of history and the tides of tradition converge to create a landscape of rarefied beauty and exclusivity.
For it is here, amidst the salty sea breezes and the clapboard houses, that the story of Old Money in Nantucket first began.
Today, Nantucket remains one of the most desirable destinations for the Old Money set, with its well-heeled residents enjoying a lifestyle of unparalleled luxury and leisure.
The next place on our list of Old Money communities in Massachusetts takes us on a journey back in time to the picturesque town of Concord, Massachusetts.
In Concord, we’ll find ourselves immersed in a world of historic-making elegance, a world that has been shaped and defined by the forces of old money and privilege.
Today, Concord remains a hub of wealth and privilege, with its grand homes and manicured lawns serving as a testament to the enduring power of Old Money in American society.
Next we travel over to the verdant hills and manicured estates of Weston, Massachusetts.
From the earliest days of its settlement, Weston has been a magnet for wealthy families seeking to escape the bustle and chaos of urban life.
Here, on the rolling hills and in the pristine forests, these families established grand estates and summer homes that would become the cornerstone of their legacies.
Next we delve into the rarefied world of Old Money in Wellesley, Massachusetts.
From its earliest days, Wellesley has been a magnet for wealthy families seeking to establish their legacies and build a better life for themselves and their children.
Next we’ll take a trip over the leafy streets and grand estates of Winchester, Massachusetts.
From its earliest days, Winchester has been a haven for wealthy families seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life and establish themselves in a community that prizes refinement and sophistication above all else.
And it is this history, this sense of continuity and legacy, that continues to attract Old Money families to Winchester to this day.
And last, we would be remiss not to mention the picturesque town of Manchester-By-The-Sea, Massachusetts a town that despite a recent film of the same name (‘Manchester-By-The-Sea’) making it sound like a depressing place to be… is synonymous with wealth, privilege, and beautiful sights.
What is it about Manchester-By-The-Sea that has made it such a hotspot for Old Money families?
Many point to the town’s stunning natural beauty, which includes miles of pristine beaches, lush forests, and scenic waterways.
For it is clear that Manchester-By-The-Sea remains firmly anchored in the traditions and legacies of Old Money, with its grand estates and sprawling mansions serving as a testament to the enduring power of wealth and privilege in American society.

Perhaps Cohasset or Hingham. Cohasset rejected Joe Kennedy even after the family built several homes on the coast. He wasn’t allowed into the Cohasset Yacht Club because he was a little too sketchy for their taste. That’s when the family decided to build beach homes on the Cape instead.

Unlike in New York, Massachusetts old money doesn't like anything new. It's considered gauche. They don't build houses, they buy one another's houses. They don't even buy clothes, they get clothes when somebody dies. The thing is the clothes are NICE clothes -- Brooks Brothers jackets from the 1930s, hand tailored for the wearer. Silk top hats. Priscilla of Boston wedding dresses from the 1950s. Their houses are tidy and clean but usually not the biggest but the antiques handed down in the family fill the place.

Beacon Hill is no longer a bastion of Old Money Wasps. Hasn't been for a long time. Boston Old money moved to the suburbs, dispersed throughout the suburbs from the Northshore to Concord, Weston to Milton. Beacon Hill may have a few remnants but not many.

The Kennedy family was never and will never be old money except when they marry into it. Beacon Hill and Nantucket haven't been old money locales for the last forty years or so. There are a few holdouts in Beacon Hill but it's largely overpriced condos, now. They are mostly filled with people and things which old money families avoid. Old money drives a twenty year old Volvo, or Jeep Cherokee, rather than a $105,000 Land Rover. They like to send their children to public school so long as possible, so good schools, rather than good restaurants are what they look for. The other towns mentioned are dead on, but old money families also like Chatham, Milton, Newton, Carlisle, Hingham, Hopkinton, Pride's Crossing/Beverly Farms, Hamilton, Wenham, Newburyport, Lexington, Marblehead, Amesbury. The richest, most obvious old money town in Massachusetts though is Dover. And no, you can't live there.

Beacon Hill really doesn't have many mansions (large homes, but not mansions) and none are elaborate (exterior). Almost all are brick Georgian rowhouses. It is also bisected by Pinckney Street with "Proper/Rich" Beacon Hill facing the Common and the "poor' side facing Cambridge Street. The large and elaborate mansions are in Back Bay. In JFK's time the Kennedys were not really "old money." His father Joseph made the fortune only a few decades earlier. Pride's Crossing (Beverly, MA) could have been included.

I lived around Boston for 20+ years. Lexington, Andover, Brookline, Newton and Weston are some of the most desirable towns. What's strange is none of these areas are flashy or posh. The houses don't look grand but they're very nice. You'll regularly see 2 million dollar homes with a Subaru station wagon or a Toyota minivan parked out in front. Exotic cars are super rare, even though there are a lot of rich folk in these areas. These people pay premiums to live amongst each other and compete for the best public schools. 1 acre lots for houses are super rare. A quarter acre lot is considered a "good size". I still don't understand the way Massachusetts rich folk think. It's all very strange to me.

A very sloppy production. Narrator needs to learn how to pronounce the names of Massachusetts places and people. Editor needs to match visuals to narration. No point showing images of Back Bay while the narration is about Beacon Hill, of Nantucket when the discussion concerns 'Sconset, or of Concord while the narrator describes Weston. It's ridiculously misleading. Would help if the narrative itself were far less verbose and a little more relevant to the video presentation. Needs a lot of work.

The Boston Brahmins are actually nobility who dropped their titles. There are historians who believe that there was a 13th amendment that was ratified and stated that no person of nobility could hold office in govt whether the title was given at birth or if it was granted such as the title of squire ( lawyer) this would explain why they all dropped their titles and took positions as governors and judges along with presidents. All presidents since Washington have shared titles of nobility. The US is an oligarchy unbeknownst to the general public not a democracy. Many have changed their names, fords real name is Leslie king. The bush’s last name is Scherff, Hilary rodhams last name is Rodomsky, Roosevelts real last name is rosenfeldt. (I know because two of David’s brothers lived there) +The picture supposedly of the Cabot family is really of the family of Honey Fitz the father of Rose Kennedy. + The pictures that purport to be of Weston show a sign for Concord Academy, which is in the heart of Concord. + The Winchester Country Club was founded in 1902, not 1922. And the Wright-Locke Farm acreage is wildly overstated. It’s not a large patch at all, and is tented by a handful of human beings. + No old money in Winchester, just a lot of newer money and that in an underwhelming amount. Also lots of people whose folks worked in the tanning mills who hate all the moneyed libs with a passion. +Emerson and Thoreau were not “drawn to“ Concord, they just always lived there. Ditto Louisa May Alcott. She lived in Concord because her feckless father Bronson was lucky enough to land there after several failed attempts at a career elsewhere. As for Thoreau, he lived in Concord because his family lived in Concord. They, and he, worked in his father’s pencil factory.

I might take this seriously if the portion on Beacon Hill included video of buildings that are actually on Beacon Hill. Weston is very nice but it is more new money than old money. I would put Marblehead and Beverley Farms ahead of Weston and Concord.

Marblehead yes but Beverly Farms is no. Beverly itself is just Meh.

Couldn’t make it through the video. Showing photos of Back Bay and the South End when referring to Beacon Hill and mentioning lavish estates and manicured lawns of Nantucket, I decided to pass.

You should have asked how to pronounce SIASCONSET before you made this video. And yes, that was Monte Carlo standing in for Manchester-by-the-Sea. Ye Gods!

Concord is a bit self-impressed and sadly intellectually largely stuck in a now diminished, appropriately, past.

My family was here in the 1607! That's right, Jamestown! My Mother's family was in Texas when Mexico was still part of Spain! So I think it's funny that new Yankees want to be snobbish about there new world heritage. 😂😂😂

Hmmm, first you butcher Siasconset, due diligence my friend, secondly, your sources must be limited. Essex and Marblehead, two of the loveliest, oldest, and most monied towns in MA. A life long Massachusetts lady I can tell you as much as I love ACK, both my daughter's were born there, it has changed drastically from what it once was. It's still lovely, but there are gangs and crime and it's a shadow of it's former self.

stolen? No your acstors were paid for their labor. And they lined up for a chance to work in the mills and factories owned by my ancestors. Exploited , maybe. But not stolen.
