Tip for new players from some one who has almost 4k hours in the game. Just play the game. find something that you find interesting and go with it. without any guides. Yes it will suck but it will teach you why it sucks. As you gain experience with the games mechanics you will eventually get better. This game is fun when you discover stuff on your own. Also if you get stuck at something and dont know what something does go to the games wiki its the most help i got.

I agree somewhat. I think it is kind of like Dark Souls, but much less explicit. In DS, I would learn from my failures, but here... I don't even see an enemy and I explode in a pool of blood. IDK the debuffs I'm receiving. IDK what the hell hit me, but one hit apparently and, boom. Same for sometimes knowing what hit me. And I thought my resistances were good (79, 73, 70) enough to at least not get 1 shot by random normal enemies. So in short, I'm not learning why I'm dying, I just die sometimes and then I don't without changing anything... that's the ONLY reason I came to this damn video.
@metaminerx

@@akeemrollins2327 some enemies just hit hard. regardless of your resistances. check your armor and health. also sometimes multiple hits kills you in less than 1 sec. theres multiple things that can kill you but you will learn them over time and learn to avoid them as well.

Advice for people having trouble capping resistances around mid-game. When you get to act 6(the act right after your first resistance penalty), do Lilly's quest to unlock a bunch of level 1 skill gems for sale. Depending on your resistances, pick from purity of fire(if you lack fire res), purity of ice(if you lack ice res), purity of lightning(if you lack lightning res), or purity of elements(if you lack res all around). I strongly recommend prioritizing your fire res, because the next boss and enemies do primarily fire damage.

Copy & pasted from another comment of mine: That's actually a weird one. It's called Herald of Agony Max Block Gladiator. Basically, your spinning attack isn't actually dealing any damage, but it's healing you a bunch and applying poisons. The real damage comes from a minion called the "Agony Crawler" (the little green spider) which scales with how quickly you can apply poisons. The reason for the sword and shield (claw and shield, actually) is this build requires very little in terms of damage scaling, and Gladiator provides a TON of shield-based bonuses, so you can afford to go all in on defense to the point of being able to facetank 99% of the games content. Here's a guide if you're interested: www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2218039

@Cyle Jackson It happens lol. I stopped playing for a year and when I came back I was confused af so I started a new character and tried different skill gems until I found something I loved spamming. Then I started just experimenting from there. Just research basic key concepts like how skill gems, sockets and links work and that's basically it. The passive skill tree should be a lot easier once you have an idea of what skills you're using and what stats you need for them. Give this approach a try.. it might work for you. The skill gems from quests rewards is often a good place to start.

Don't worry about it, you don't need to know most of this. The best advice I could give you is get the lootfilter from NeverSink since it'll help you understand what items actually carry value. If you're in the group of people who don't want to copy a build and prefer to make their own as well, you don't have to follow a guide. I'd still recommend checking out several guides on the skill that you're gonna use just so you can look at their skill trees and figure out which clusters are the most important, then you'll have a solid basis to figure out your own pathing from :-)
@leadpaintchips9461
@leadpaintchips9461 5 жыл бұрын
The main things to remember is that most of the gear that you find is going to be hot trash, and defenses are king. Most of what you will find (even with a loot filter to have the truly hot trash not show up) are not going to be helping with defenses. With defenses being king, that's what a character needs to prioritize first, damage second.

DON'T LISTEN TO THIS VIDEO. Seriously, it's fucking stupid. This is a guide for the most hardcore minmaxing in the game, it is not "tips for new players" like it says. You can completely finish the story and a lot more with just playing the game and not bothering with any of this crap. New players should not bother with any of this and they should not copy build orders. A big appeal of the game is exactly how much options it gives you to build your own character. Rendering this to a Simon Says, follow the build order game takes away a big part of that appeal.

I would add to the recipes section , that the chromatic orb recipe is really useful early on, I got to 400 chromatic orbs(around 55 chaos orbs) by the time I reached 75. The recipe is an item with at least 3 linked sockets with at least 3 different colours. Loot filters will show these items, just dont miss out on them . :)

I might be a noob, but the charm of the game (IMO) is to make use of what i can find along the way. That's why i wouldn't recommend a newbie to start trading and min-maxing on their first few characters. Still, kinda glad that there are guides for people that just want to safely power through the game with a meta build. I thought these tips would be like: "If you need a few Chromatic Orbs, try searching for it's recipe equipment on the weapon/armor shops."

huehue123 huehue123 It may seem like that, but it’s really complex and fun when you get into end game. Basically there’s maps, T1-15, you grind to get better gear and skill points to be able to take on the higher tier maps, they get really hard so you’ve always got something to strive for and that keeps you motivated to play. Once you get to T15’s they have a chance to drop special T16 maps, there’s 4 of them and each has a unique boss at the end. When you beat them all you can take on the big boss, and have a chance to drop his really powerful unique item. On top of bossing, there’s a marketplace to make money, to buy better gear for your build or for future builds, so another fun aspect is crafting rare items to get something valuable and selling for profit. Really there’s so much layers I can only do so much to explain, you need to experience it yourself.

You forgot the other important newbie trap game mechanic similar to Cap Your Resists, its called Path of Lifenodes. Common mistake with new players is not building enough Life, and then getting destroyed from Act 6 onwards. I've found it helpful giving a "minimum recommended" life amounts for new players so they can keep that in mind when putting points in the stat tree. Like Act 5 Kitava 1400, Act 10 Kitava 3100, Merciless Izaro 4000 and so on.

Great video man, very detailed. To add, for new/intermediate players (in trade league): 1) If you have a problem with labyrinths, go to www.poelab.com/. They have a tool called poelab compass and provide different information to guide you through. 2) Eventually you'll have to sell your stuffs to other players for profit. You need to buy a premium stash tab using real-life money. It is totally worth it. 3) If you are really new to the game, be careful in attempting to use a currency into an item if you don't know what you are doing. Some notable examples are: - Slamming an exalted orbs to low-end items. - Using divine orbs to cheap uniques. - Using orb of fusings to 6-link a non end-game items. - Using chromatic orbs to get multiple off-colored sockets. In short, dont blow up your currencies, specially at low levels. At earlier stage, minimize the use of currencies to upgrade your gears. Use the bulk of your currencies for a very large upgrades at a later stage. You are better off saving/selling your currencies and just buy the items you needed, but this is always not the case. currency.poe.trade/ is very helpful for trading currencies. 4) Level up additional gems in your secondary weapon set. Check out poe.ninja/challenge/skill-gems to see which gems are worth leveling up. 5) Don't screw up your gears if you don't have a backup plan. Some notable examples are: - Trying to upgrade from 5-link to 6-link. Sometimes you will end up with less links than your original one. - Trying to corrupt an item for a better implicit mod. Worst case scenario, the item will brick and becomes unusable at all. Don't forget that one screwed up item might screw up your entire set or even your entire build. 6) Watch out for items that have red+blue+green linked together and items with 6 sockets. Loot them, they are worth selling to any NPC.

Easy tip for beginners: 1) Use Summoner “witch” 2) Type “minion” in the search bar when you’re buying gems so you know what to focus on. 3) Type “minion” in the search bar when you’re upgrading your passives in passive tree to see where all passive minion skills are and just focus on pathing to them all. 4) You don’t need super defense, just find armor and weapons that can compliment your minions. 5) stand in the back and let your army wipe out everything in the front. 6) You will definitely finish the game with this build and you can farm up necessary items to use the Build guides when making a new character.

Loot filter a touchy subject, yea I agree. While Filterblade have all the functions available, I prefer to construct my own filter, cuz I don't like 3000+ lines of codes, when i can just do it with 300 or less. Using Notepad / FilterMaster to customize is faster than Filterblade when the code is just so short. Often time there is sudden need of some minor changes for some specific needs, be it personal needs or economy changes, it is far faster to DIY rather than relying/waiting for Filterblade to update their version...

Tip : If you want some one to reply quicker when trading, First turn on timestamps in your settings, next After you pasted your whisper in game wait a few seconds, up to a minute. Then whisper the person you want to trade with, "you there?" And usually you will get a response as the trader usually doesn't use timestamps, and will think that you've been waiting a while. I do this so I know it works.

The "Phys damage to a weapon" with a rustic sash is the most important vendor recipe for new players. And the chaos recipe is a newb trap because rings and amulets by themselves can sell for 1-10 chaos with a simple crafted mod (and you don't have to carry around all the other junk).

Some 'newb traps' I see from time to time: -Regarding the passive tree, damage isn't everything (in fact it's often the least important thing to prioritize). -Don't think of the starting classes as archetypic roles or classes. They are nothing more than a starting point on the passive tree and do not define or limit the type of character you will play. -This game has a lot of depth. Do NOT measure your learning curve against those who have played this game for hundreds/thousands of hours. Be comfortable with your ignorance and learn at your own pace. I had a buddy telling me everything I needed to know and I honestly forgot 90% of everything he said until I learned it for myself. You're not going to be able to soak in advice/tips at face value and become a wiz at this game. You still need to put in the time and that's okay.

It has been a few years since I last played POE, but I didn't find it all that complex or challenging to build my first character. The skill tree is quite self-explanatory and I think it is common sense to focus on certain strengths and not get distracted, which is quite easy the way the skill tree is built. My first character was a Necromancer and I knew from the start that I would focus on getting the most and strongest minions possible and then invest the surplus skill points into mana and energy shield. The result was a pretty min-maxed character, as far as I can tell. I had enough skill points to get all the minion-related skills and then some. When I checked back into the game a while ago, after a long absence, I noticed my skill tree was reset and I was refunded all the skill points and would have to spend them anew if I were to play again. So I assume they must have made some bigger changes to warrant that. Whether what I said about the skill tree is totally obsolete now and it suddenly is a cryptic puzzle, I don't know. However, I did successfully play through the story mode on the first attempt with that character, but that doesn't mean I didn't run into issues. What I found challenging was that the boss of the labyrinth was really hard to fight with my character. Even though I had invested a lot of spare points into "energy shield" and didn't want my character to be a glass cannon, the guy kept one-shotting me and I had to kite and run around like crazy every time I fought him. Even stopping for a second to cast a spell or summon a new skeleton meant instant death. When I later befriended some other players with barbarian and rogue characters, they seemed to have no problems with the guy and the last 2 times I fought him, I only defeated him because they helped me. The issue with that was that the A.I. of my minions wasn't good enough. They stupidly kept running after my kiting character instead of fighting the boss or his mobs. It is quite a problem when your character is fragile and easy to kill to offset that your minions are so strong and tough, but then your minions don't fight because the A.I. isn't up to the task. So that is quite a balancing problem, especially since that is such a important boss, whom you have to fight again and again throughout a play-through. Only a few of the story line bosses were anywhere near as hard to defeat as that guy.

LOL 1) You will horribly fail at this game on your first character 2) You will fail so hard you will not even finish the story mode on your first character 3) Lower your expectation and prepare for an impassable difficulty spike 4) To avoid the above follow a pre-planed character you can find online 5) Go download Path of Building as you will learn more from it then actually playing the game. 6) Jack all you resists or prepare to be one shotted 7) Look up online your vendor combo selling / crafting recipes 8) Go to another website and get a loot filter so you don't waste time picking up crap 9) To trade go to one of two other websites to see listed items 10) Open chat with the player you want to trade with and then prepare to be ignored 11) Finally download this other fucking trade maco program, figure out how to use it, and somehow this fucking improves your trading experience 12) Launch some fucking script and it will help you navigate your fucked up inventory and make sure your not getting ripped off on trades 13) But be careful as after all that bullshit you'll still likely get inaccurate fucking info 14) Learn to manage and collect the two dozen different trade currencies 15) And remember after all this you can just start over if you fuck up your build or find you are getting horribly owned

Dont think this video was intended to bring in new players. There's a difference in a video for new players and a video for potential new players, this video is the former. Many people who look for tips/guides are normally already playing the game and are looking for help in their new characters. If you are someone who hasn't touched the game you'd find a gameplay video instead to see how the game is like. That being said this video does make it seem hard on new players since you'll have to "download this program" or "follow some build" however do remember that these are just tips that experienced players find are useful and in no way do you have to follow if you find it troublesome. I've played this game since beta and I have never used the trade macro nor do I have a premium stash tab to sell items. PoE isn't a broken game, it's amazingly well made it just have a steep learning curve for new players. Honestly, act 1 through 10 is a cakewalk once you're familiar with the game.

I'd reload the game in an instant .. someone give me a ring if that happens.

Physical damage recipe - sell normal weapon together with blacksmith's whetstone and magic or rare rustic sash. You gonna get the same weapon with +% to physical damage (I believe somewhere between 50 and 70%). Two tips considering this, first, you can check the percentage you'll be getting out of the recipe, so if you have few pieces of the same weapon, pick one with highest %. Second you should whetstone the weapon before trading it in, quality on it stays after trading, and improving white weapon only requires 4 whetstones, it's especially useful when you're just starting with first character of the league.

My build was simple, caster using frost bolt greater multi support and spell echo. Was shooting 14 blobs of death per cast. Probably pretty basic to you guys reading but I thought I was pretty bad ass at the time. Herald of ice, hatred and another aura I can't remember. Almost all of my mana was reserved, had enough mana to cast 2 maybe 3 spells before being oom, but my regen was fast enough I could just spam waves of ice bolts. This game blows my mind sometimes. As a guy with over 2000 hours in POE I can help out by saying this. I have 2128 hours and I still don't know everything, I dont have to in order to play the game. It's not like diablo were people on the second day of the season min/max and everyone pushing plays the same build. It's a dynamic game that allows for you to make a character that can keep up with the top builds or in rare cases, even beat the top builds. Figure out how the skill gems and the passive tree work and make a build and work on it until it works for you. Play the game with people, it's a fun game without them but wiping with a party could be particularly funny if you dont take it all too seriously. Day one only matters to racers and neckbeards. You dont have to join in on day one, I find myself busy with work and family that I dont come into a league until maybe a few weeks into it. Day one only matters for those of the hardcore fanatics and the culty neckbeards who are rude to others because of the pain they cause themselves. In conclusion path of exile is a fun game that you can be creative on with your build and once you figure out the skills and the passives, a few mates and you learn to ignore the neckbeards and the racers( although fun to watch this is what they do for a living so I doubt any new/'casual' players can play that much.)your time will excel with much joy. And remember, praise the great toucan daily for good drops in global chat ;)

@atreidestw
@atreidestw 5 жыл бұрын
I think you're asking too much from yourself. Nobody has a firm grasp of everything there is to know when they start this game and not even once they've invested hundreds of hours. The big secret is you don't need to know everything. Most of what there is to know won't apply specifically to any 1 character you play. You'll make mistakes and hopefully learn what to do better next time; That's the essence of any game that offers depth or difficulty; How does one get better at a game like Dark Souls? They die a lot - But repeated deaths doesn't mean the game isn't worth playing. Seeing your success grow from your own application of lessons learned can be very fulfilling. Nothing in this video needs to be understood and adopted by the player from the first minute of the game. You don't need to focus on trading until you're doing end-game activities (or not at all if you don't want to). Loot filters can be added or adjusted simply when you're tired of seeing a bunch of loot you know you'll never pick up. The point is to be okay with the fact that you won't know everything you'll want to know. We all learn this game from the same starting point. It irks me when new players say "I wasted my entire first character because I didn't know what I was doing" - That first character was a lesson learned. That's not a waste in the grand scope of this game and it's the reason why players build a foundation of knowledge that no new player can have when they start. We all put in the time to get where we are now which is why I opened with "you're asking too much from yourself".

I followed it exactly and it helped a ton because it was VERY detailed. I also invested some time taking notes and slowly reading about different aspects and systems in the game. This was actually the first arpg I played so it was a bit overwhelming at first. Sites like Poebuilds are so so so helpful. It's true that if you try to wing it on the first go, your endgame will be very difficult, which isn't necessarily a bad thing because you learn from it. Part of what I like about this game is that you can put soooooo much time into it. There are so many builds to try, you can become a full time trader which is what I did for a lot of the abyss league, and PoE is constantly adding new content! It seems like a lot, and overwhelming because there is a lot you can do! I have friends that only play for a couple hours at a time, just chipping away at it, and they still have a blast.

It's gonna sound dumb, but if you're starting as Duelist/Ranger/Shadow it doesn't matter what your build is. Pick up a bow and Shrapnel Shot. The skill has the arrow + cone to double it's damage. 2 Iron rings + Added Cold/Fire, it'll get you to lvl12 easy even without related passive allocated. (lvl12 is where the first fun skills are)

Just try it! It's free and it's awesome. You don't need all these to play the game or finish the story-line. The story line is nice and the final boss is very nice (contrary to the anorexic Diablo in D3). The skill system is interesting and allow you to customize a skill in a lot of way. It also changes your perspective on loot : ie. an item with a lot of skill links is better than a legendary item with no link. For the huge skill trees, just use common senses (avoid increasing ONLY constitution on your mage) and explore it just a little, and you'll be fine.

The way people talk about this game makes it seem more like a job than to have fun. When I first started the game, I stated how using a build guide seems like it takes out all of the fun of playing and discovering things yourself, and I was immediately met with a wall of insults and "have fun dying" from global chat. I get that it might be harder later on, but the community really sucks at encouraging new players.

Global chat during prime time is often toxic. The best suggestion I can give you if you want to use the global chat is to type "/global 5055" into your chat window. That's a channel of the global chat that was made for the reddit community. There's way more helpful people in there and it's generally a lot less toxic than global 1-30. The best advice I can give you if you don't want to copy a build is to figure out a skill you wanna use, look at a couple of builds to get a feel for what clusters on the skill tree are the most important, explanations of mechanics, etc, then you can make informed decisions while creating your own build :-)

The skill tree is actually a lot more simple to understand than it was earlier on in the game's life. If it's still too much, you might be interested in Grim Dawn. More complexity and build variety than Diablo 3 but not at the level of complexity that is PoE
@nathanbrotherbob

I agree, the skill tree can be extremely daunting at first. However, I would hardly say you need a doctoral thesis (or even much of a brain at all, if you follow a build guide) to understand it, just patience and some natural curiosity.

I'm not sure why you're linking a 2 year old reddit post, but the word "thesis" isn't even being correctly used here. All this guy wants is feedback on which build to play- he just formatted his question horribly. As for how following a build guide is different from playing a pre-determined class, I'd say you've got me there. It's really not lol. The only major difference is you chose to do so, which means once you learn more about the game and feel ready, you're free to embrace the awesome flexibility of the skill tree and do your own thing!
@satibel
@satibel 5 жыл бұрын
@@SnlDrako basically the tree is split in nodes that give you stats and get you somewhere, give you damage, or give you defense, and a few unique nodes, once you know that, you can just look what unique nods you want, and make a line that passes through as much defense as you can and grabs enough offense, and if that uses too many points you start cutting down stuff till you have enough points.

@@arminh1111 The passive tree acts like a stat booster (more health, extra damage etc) and has special nodes that gives special bonuses like (e.g Your attacks never miss but you don't do critical strikes) you can reallocate these with orb of regrets (very expensive early on) and respec points ( you get them from certain quests) Your actual skills comes from skill gems. Which can be purchased from vendors or obtained from quest rewards or dropped as loot from monsters. Once you place the gem into a socket on your gear you gain that ability. So you can easily try them all out and see which suits you. Then when you're ready to commit to it. You can start figuring out which passives can best benefit your character. @systemhalodark

Corrupted is like a one-try gambling to get special/extra modifications, but with the risk of destroying the item (or not making any change). It's one-try, because once it's corrupted, you can't modify it anymore (except sockets/links, with max level Vorici craftbench). Also, a corrupted chest drops corrupted items, which have a higher chance of having extra sockets and links (statistically easier to get 6-links over many tries).
@TheReaverOfDarkness

Best advice for noobs: link your favorite spell projectile gem with fork. Now cast that at enemies. Once you begin to understand the potential value of support gems, you'll understand how important it is to learn how each support gem works. Too difficult/want to kill enemies easily? No problem: Link 'fireball' to 'fork' as well as either 'lesser multiple projectiles' or 'greater multiple projectiles' (but not to both). Then link 'freezing pulse' to 'increased critical strikes' and 'increased critical damage'. You can link more supports to either of these if you have enough linked gem slots available. Now you can kill huge groups of enemies with fireball, or strong bosses with freezing pulse. Alternatively, anything that strongly resists one spell may be killed with the other spell. There are many other successful strategies and classes, but this will net you enough damage to play up to the end of the story. The next best advice is to focus your passives on a defensive build. You'll want passives that boost your defenses, life, or damage, in that order of preference. When you get the hang of linking support gems properly, you'll never again have to struggle with not doing enough damage (unless you're weapon-based and need to upgrade your weapon), so what you'll notice first about high-level enemies is that they also have little difficulty killing you. Recommended defensive setups for beginners: * Armor only * Armor and Energy Shield * Evasion and Energy Shield Any defensive setup must also be paired with maxed fire, lightning, and cold resists. Getting extra above max is also useful. You can get resists most easily on rings, amulets, and belts without sacrificing other important attributes. You can also save many of them in your stash to pull out later when fixing up your resistances. Try to max out your resists by level 40. Keep checking it as you go to higher acts, because there will be act effects which reduce your resists by some amount. Lastly, the most common way players die to high-level enemies is from reflected damage. You'll have to look online for tips to mitigate that, but I'm mentioning it here because it's difficult to figure out what's happening when all you see is one moment you're creaming the enemies, and the next you're dead for no apparent reason. If that happens, it was most likely reflected damage. More defenses than damage will help you resist reflected damage. By the time you're an expert player, you'll be using a wide variety of auras, minions, and other special skills, but you don't need to fuss over learning these. Take them one step at a time and just try using them yourself. Rule of thumb: any time a guide says to use something and you don't know what it is, just try it out yourself. Abandon the guide for a moment and just play the game. Once you come back to the guide, it'll make a lot more sense.
