I think the title of this video is kinda confusing. Guppies are the most easier fish to keep for 1st time beginner based on my experience. So, if this video is talking about the lifespan or survival rate (sustainability) for those fishes, i can understand with it.

I think you touched on some very good points. Just one thing came to my mind you could've added about guppies. That they are livebearing fish so if one is a beginner they should keep it in mind they'll be overrun with fish pretty quickly and if they're not prepared properly or can't keep more fish, it is best to stay away from any livebearing fish. Another great video keep it up. 😊👍

Too funny! You just shut down our local Petco! 🤣 Seriously ~ you reminded me of my first community tank ~ many, many, many years ago. A 20 gallon. One afternoon I bought this little fish ~ sort of greenish, with red on it's sides. Couldn't of been more than an inch and a half long. Looked at me with these big sad eyes ~ I fell in love! She grew very quickly! Ate all her tank mates! Tore the tank to shreds! My income tax return was used to buy her a 50 gallon tank! Had no clue at the time I had bought an Oscar. Never regretted it! Had Tilly for 8 years ~ she was amazing! ❤️

My first experience seeing live fish as a kid in the 70s was a big tank with wild type oscars. My first tank years later was a 55gallon that became home to a red tiger oscar that was a true "wet pet". Greeted me when I came home, loved to eat frozen peas, would even put like a small child at times. He had silver dollar tankmates and lived a full life, no regrets. I recently set that tank up again over 20 years later and am enjoying it in a totally different way. Actual aquascaping, snails, happy roseline sharks, congo tetras, dwarf chain loaches and siamese algae eaters. Both experiences are work doing over one's fish keeping career.

I’m glad you included oscars. I’m always sad to see all the cute baby oscars being sold at our local big box pet shop. They don’t even stock enough tanks large enough to house them. Also, it’s likely that the big box shops sell oscars that are already infected with hole-in-the-head disease.

Agree with guppies. The imported ones can be an issue. When I restarted my fish keeping hobby, I got some guppies from Petsmart and almost immediately I had to treat for fungus disorder I agree they probably were imported from the far east. Out of the 5 that I bought there only one has survived in the 4 months that I have been back in the hobby. 3 of the females gave birth before they passed so I was replenished. The next 3 I bought were from a local fish store that only buys locally. All have survived and I have given them some of the results of my many broods they have given birth to. I don't know how it is in Australia but here in the states I have been more fortunate in getting good quality guppies that don't come from foreign sources. Great video Nick

Goldfish are very easy to keep, as long as you have a large volume of water to keep them in, do frequent water changes, and feeding them small amounts regularly. DO NOT RELEASE them to in natural ecosystems when you don't want them anymore, as they are highly destructive and invasive. DO NOT put goldfish, or any fish in BOWLS. Bowls are for plants, small invertebrates, and perhaps, as a TEMPORARY EMERGENCY make-shift quarantine tank for NANO FISH ONLY.

Cherry barbs or checker barbs are aggressive to their own species. They like dark places, so they are good at spotting each other out. They either need large tanks or lots of foliage/cracks. The younger ones get scared and never want to come out.

Sadly I have to agree. Quality is becoming a very big problem. Breeders taking shortcuts and looking only for the numbers not the general health of their "product". And then we see deformed fish, new diseases, and genetic problems everywhere.

Not really the fault of the breeder. I breed WC, F1, F2 Malawi cichlids and let me tell you people don't give a big shit about quality. Does it have color and is it cheap, that's the first thoughts going through the buyer.

Soo true about the Goldfish!!!!!! We bought 4 feeder fish from the local pet store for 10 cents each. They now live in the self made pond out back. They had babies…. It was cheaper to dig the pond then buy the tank and everything. Now they are comfy outside all year without maintenance. The pond is 6’ by 4’ and a depth of 5’. Trust they have more than enough room.

The Angelfish; my first fish way back in 1976! Hard to choose tankmates for them. Most of these are easy IF you start with a big tank. Neons can be problematic healthwise as you said and barbs need a bigger tank than people give them because they need large numbers and appropriate tankmates. Cherry barbs are an exception, though.

Its funny that three fish that are on this list were my first 3 types of fish in my first tank. Just got into the hobby about two years ago & got a tank filled it with a few angels, school of tetras, & some male guppies & everythings been thriving. I had no experience before hand and over the course of two years only lost a couple neons & 1 guppy that was being bullied. Im so glad i didnt see this video when i first got into the hobby because it would of scared me away from those 3 types fish & that tank is my favorite thing in my house. If you research & actually take care of your fish then those 3 types of fish are very easy to take care of.

I will never forget walking through a Walmart many, many years ago (back when Walmart had big fish sections with fish). I overheard the worker telling a customer that Oscars were "good for community tanks". I absolutely had to jump in and correct that worker. I used to raise Oscars and piranhas for a fish store that was local to me at that time, so I definitely knew what I was talking about. I ended up helping that customer pick proper fish for their community tank. Can you imagine what would have happened to the fish in their setup if they had added an oscar?! What a nightmare!

Great points on all the fish! I’m a beginner (done lots of research though). Had guppies. They literally ate the top fin and tail of my Platy (who I had to nurse back to health) and bullied all the fish in my tank. Moved them to unheated unfiltered bins until I could get the t o the pet store. Can’t kill them if you try but they were mean! Also, had checkered barbs (supposedly peaceful). They chased fish around my tank and fin nipped and stressed them out bad. I didn’t have a separate tank for them so had to return them also.

I agree, good beginner fish are Bettas, Rams and Honey Gouramis for a more personable fish if you are only going to keep one fish or a male and female or 2, platys for colourful fish in a group, corydoras for bottom fish and rasboras or tetras for schooling fish. 10 gallon tank - 7 ember tetras, 10 cherry shrimp, 2 nerite snails 20 gallon tank - 3 platys, 12 ember tetras, 5 corydoras, 2 nerite snails, 2 otocinclus 30 gallon - 1 honey gourami, 7 cardinal tetras, 7 corydoras, 4 nerite snails, 1 bristlenose 40 gallon - 1 honey gourami, 7 platys, 9 rummynose teras, 10 corydoras, 6 nerite snails, 4 otocinclus, 1 bristlenose Id stick to something like that for community tanks for people who like mixing fish. I'd go for Endlers instead of Guppys as they are more hardy and smaller so you can get more, same with Platys over Mollies, Mollies get bigger sometimes much bigger, can be a little more aggressive. Although both can be prone to tuberculosis type disease, Mollies I feel get it more possibly due to prefering a decent amount of salt in the water or harder water. People also say don't keep less than 6 otocinclus as they shoal but I think you need a big tank 40+ gallons and need to produce a good amount of algae to sustain them. Although they are small if you put 6 in a 20 gallon they will clear it of algae in a few days and then will suck the slime coats of bigger or slower moving or sleeping fish unless fed vegetables. As they dont ever eat store bought fish food even algae wafers, they only eat algae and vegetables. 1 Otocinclus will live a long time in a tank with a small amount of algae, like if you have to wipe your glass once a week, 1 oto will mean you don't need to do that as it will eat it all. 6 Otocinclus will die in the same tank because they will eat all the algae in like a day and they will not eat any fish food so will starve and die in a week or 2, they need to really be eating algae all day every day, so the less the better for a small tank.

Now that they are mature one has claimed its territory and bullies the other one. Fortunately the aquarium shop is going to take the “bully” back.

Honestly, after working for the devil (Petsmart) I can attest to most of these. People would come in, buy loads of all these fish. And either come back asking for money back or sometimes bring back big 'ol oscars that they couldn't take care of. Another I would add to the list would be Bala sharks...people don't understand how big they can get.

I personally have a pair in my betta sorority - an intermediate tanks. Neons - I didn’t know about the disease. Thanks! Guppies - You do have a legit. point. about getting bad stock. Oscars - I absolutely agree these are not beginner fish. You absolutely have to know what you’re doing. Research. Angels - I think this applies to most or, I dare say all chiclids. Goldfish - I agree with this. Huge waste producers. Most people also might now know they’re a cold - water fish, if I recall. Barbs - Oh good lord, yes. We had a cherry barb in with a group of embers and didn’t know it. He even bullied my pygmy corydoras. We got him some girls, put him in a different tank, and it was a good thing. He lived out the rest of his days in comfort. I think a lot of what you talk about in this video comes down to a few things… choosing a good, reputable fish source where you can trust the stock, researching on the part of the fish keeper to know what sort of tank they need, parameters (shop for the fish you want, not get the tank and choose the fish) and just plain, old fashioned common sense.

My dad still continues to add fish from this list to his tanks even though he's had a tank going for over 30 years. We had guppies that I had bred in with mollies and platys. And they were doing fine with the betta in our 40 gallon community tank. No problems at all then dad put in 4 tiger Barbs and a pair of tricolor angels. Ended up killing ALL of my guppies. Then he added a red cap oranda, a red and white oranda, and a black moore. The bards and angels kept each other in line but the goldfish nearly killed all the live plants. We ended up having to move the betta to his own tank because the others were destroying his fins.

I had 3 oskars when i was young. They were a very fun pets, they were jupming up for the food, and very beautiful. We kept them for a couple of years and then they startet to be too big for our aquarium and we gave them away to people with bigger one) I dont regret anything, they were the best fish we had :)

My betta Pallifinas keep the copparbarbs in check. Actually a good combination if you have wild bettas (big ones). But yeah I agree with everything on the list. There are so many nice beginner fishes that are overlooked cause guppys and goldfishes have a myth about them.

I agree actually as a kid I had a gold fish and we had him for like a year before he was so big we just had to rehome it. Not realizing they got so big and apparently we were lucky alot of people I know their gold fish don't even live a year. Which is so sad to me.

over the course of the last year i have bought about 10 guppies, every time in groups of two or three. I only have 2 surviving guppes right now and a dalmatio molly that's been quite tame with them. Discouraaaged me a lot whhenevr they would die because I felt like maybe I didn't acclimate them properly, maybe the pH levels were too acidic, etc. Guppies definitely are difficult fish at first, but once you get past the scary first few weeks, they're so easy to take care of! If people get guppies, definitely be preepared for heartbreak :')

I am a beginner fish owner with 3 Glofish Tetras, 1 blackmoor goldfish, 1 Oranda goldfish, 2 cory catfish and an apple snail. An issue I often see in beginner fish owners is research. A lot of times, people do not research and prepare for the fish or aquatic creatures they are looking to buy. This often leads to, in community tanks, fish incompatibility and diseases. This is my first official community tank, which is 10 gallons currently. I understand that I will have to size up to a 29 gallon as the fish grow, because they are currently small and no more than two inches in size. I see a lot of people buying too small of tanks for their community fish. People need to do their research on compatibility, diets, and tank sizes before getting the fish. Seriously.

I had a gold fish as a kid and it did not play well with others. However it had a lot of character. Also Orandas make great pets, although they do need quite a large tank. They are very social with humans which is surprising for a fish.

Surprise additions "Angel" Fish and "Guppies". I got 4 small angel fish and they get very along well. happy to see them grow for 3 years and they are huge now. The reason you said for Guppies are acceptable. They survive only for an year. Good reason to add Gold fish. Maintenance also high for gold fish. They easily die if not provided the good clean water and filter.

I'd say Plecos are easy to keep... they are extremely hardy, as long as the tank is big enough... and of course, there is a misconception that they are a clean-up fish, while many of them don't eat algea and they are generally poop-machines. The big problem is that many put them in small tanks. In fact, many fish that are considered as hard to keep for new beginners is because they require a big tank, not that they require any advanced care.

My first fish was a Oscar. I had it in a 20 gallon tank for years. It never grew past 5 inch. I gave it plenty of food and did water changed 2-3 times a week. It just didn’t wanna grow bigger than it needed to be in that tank.

i started this hobby over 1 year ago , i started with a 100g and now i have 50g+100g+190g . and i can indeed agree with the plecos+oscars+angels, as a new fish guy i always heard ot get a pleco and so on.. even tough i wasnt really planning on getting one, my dad got me one and i got another one from a friend so i didnt directly buy them and now 1 year later they really only anoy most of my fish like my tire track eels mostly ( going in his cave and blocking the exists etc ) , and the poop ALOT , i swear when i moved one once they were more poop then pleco ! and at that time he was 8 inches, oscars oscars oscars ... they are lovely and super fun i love hand feeding them but as they grow they become more and more crazy when i feed them and i started to get a bit more of afriad of them biting me, then angelfish i do love but sadly i got 2x of them not knowing anything about angelfish and it turned out they became a pair and laid eggs :)))) even in a 190g that wasnt enough place they constantly harraseed eveyr other fish in the tank.. so i had to get rid of them
