Some very good tips. I heard the one about hanging curtains on another channel, as it happens, but it’s an excellent tip and one I shall use next time I redecorate. I also like the idea of choosing the wall colour to match furniture, instead of the other way around. Not pushing furniture against the walls is only appropriate if you have a very large room; believe me, if you saw the size of my living room you’d understand why the furniture is against the walls! Make sure a room has a focal point? - definitely. Size of area rug? Hmm. Again, I think this depends on the size of the room. My house is old and the rooms are tiny, but it does have very nice hardwood floors. I just have a living room rug to add some colour and for a cosy place to rest my feet when I’m watching TV. If it was as large as you suggest it would cover up one of the most attractive features in the room.

Just subbed so I can watch more. This was so helpful. I moved into my husband's house and it's a design nightmare and would love to see you talk about design challenges you may have come across and how you fixed them. Example for me: The backs of his upper and lower kitchen cabinets form one of the walls to the dining room. It's hideous and I've yet to figure out what to do with it shy of knocking out the upper cabinets (which is not feasible for us to do right now).
@JulieKhuu
@JulieKhuu 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your support 🙏🏻 Try drawing your eye away from the kitchen and creating a focal point in the dining space with a beautiful pendant light, art in the walls. Treat each space separately and even if they’re adjacent. You can also finish the back of the cabs with nicer materials since you have to look at them
@marielucier7982

I have a kitchen counter backed by a counter a few inches higher on the dining room side. Only 22” space to see through. Dark oak cabinets and just ugly and depressing. So I had the cabinets above removed and knocked out the (also 22” hi wall... 7’ across) out. Had a Taj Mahal shaped arch dry walled in. Huge open space now. (I’ve had other arches built in here and there as well). The cabinets below the dining counter and all kitchen cabinets are now white inside and out (I’m the painter) and I am refinishing new filigree hardware handles in a soft Matt gold. So the point is, can you open the space?
@grat2010
@grat2010 4 жыл бұрын
@@marielucier7982 Thx for your response.That's exactly what i have going on! The problem is that the cabinets were just installed 2 or 3 years ago and my SO doesn't want any cabinets removed since "they just got installed". I gotta pick my battles and figure out how to somehow make that 22 inch gap work.

Design mistakes series is now up on the channel! Check it out in the playlist! In regards to TV height, if you have a smaller space always start at 50” a.f.f. on center and raise the TV up from there. 65” may still be too high for some if your viewing point is only a few feet away. My sweet spot is around the 50” mark because my ceiling height is only 7ft at the lowest point in my ranch-style home.

I was real excited when she called out mounting TVs over the fireplace for being not ergonomic. Spot on! But then came the silly 65" AFF recommendation, which is NOT ergonomic- it's still too high. The middle of the screen should be at eye level, which is around 42" high. If you're sitting in a recliner with your head tilted back, then the TV can be mounted higher, but on a tilt mount so top of the screen can be moved forward.

Lol love your attention to detail Ken. You also have to consider how far your main seating group is away from the TV 😉

Just re-read this! You’re absolutely right Ken! I meant 45” AFF! All my TV’s are hung at this height 🤦🏻‍♀️ Need to make a little cheat sheet to pin for viewers, thanks for calling this out!

I appreciated the information on area rugs. I've been using them wrong. I have reallyn nice ones situated around funiture, but no focal point. Little tips like these at a time are very helpful if someone is just trying to "jazz up" or modify what they have already.

Could you do a more detailed video on how to avoid mistake of choosing the same material (wood, metal) all the way in a space. I m struggling with how to choose ones that compliment each other . Also, if we have an tiny open space (living + dining together and the kitchen) how do I choose where to put the focal points? Do I do a focal points for each area? Would it be too busy for a small place?
@JulieKhuu
@JulieKhuu 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video suggestion! Focal points are arbitrary, first decide on what’s important to highlight in your space and develop the adjacent rooms around that. If it’s a beautiful mirror in the dining room, let that be the star.

“Don’t push your furniture against the wall”. Lol! Clearly never been in a typical English three bed semi or terraced house! If it’s not against the wall, it literally wouldn’t fit! Although the other tips were great!
@JulieKhuu

Lol! No, I get it 😂 Just not ALL your furniture. The main piece can be pushed against the wall, but you can float accent chairs to square out a seating group 👍🏻

Julie Khuu Wow! Thanks for the reply! It’s only because I’m jealous of those beautiful spacious American homes with their ‘great’ rooms, with multiple seating areas, and nothing against the walls! Here in the UK either the back of the sofa is going against the wall, or your knees are! 😂
