As an amateur boxer myself, I would get extremely pissed at these refs. When they let shit like this happen, it just shows theyre either clueless, out of the situation or dont care about the fighters
@peaceseeker99272 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure in all cases the referees were clueless, some of them may have allowed certain fighters to be excessively beaten intentionally. Also some refs don't want to be called out for being soft and be blamed for stopping fights too soon. It's rare in my observation that title fights are stopped too soon, so whenever I see a fight where the ref is criticized for not letting it continue a little longer, I am on the side of the ref's decision nearly always. In my young years I did as a light middle weight spar with a number of amateur and pro boxers who were preparing for fights, from flyweight to heavyweight, so I am clear about what punches to the head can do.

One thing that concerns me is that fighters who are being held up by the ropes while defenseless and taking murderous punishment are only on their feet because of the ropes, therefore the ref cannot give an 8 count since standing 8 counts are no longer allowed. This can have tragic consequences for fighters who take excessive punishment in those scenarios. Many fighters are too foolish to let themselves fall to the canvas when they can no longer fight back and are being hammered, but sometimes its because they are so stunned they don't know where they are or that they should fall down and take the count.
@GFoB11 ай бұрын
Today if the ropes were the only thing keeping them up or the fighter is helplessly against the ropes the referee can called that a technical knockdown and commence the knockdown procedure.....they sure needed that rule back in the day.

Great video. It showed madness at different levels. The refs were absurdly incompetent in allowing fighters to continue being pounded in the head while defenseless. In some cases, the corners of some of the fighters could have jumped in and forcefully ended the fight, regardless of consequences. In one scene the ref allowed the fighter to be fatally injured while trying to respect his reputation, how crazy is that? If a fighter is taking repeated power shots to the head unanswered the ref should stop the fight, period. It doesn't matter if the fighter's hands are still up (instinctively) or their corner will be angry that it was stopped, it's the ref who has the right to decide.
@cedrickroy36673 жыл бұрын

Great video. One of the worst of the modern era was Duran vs Moore. We all love Duran and watching him sink his teeth into an opponent is what we like to see but that fight should have been stopped 2 rounds before it was. By the end of the 6th, Moore had shipped incredible punishment, had lost any snap in his punches and his right eye was swollen shut. He couldn't win but the referee and his corner let Duran use him as a human heavy bag for another 2 rounds. Jose Torres was screaming at the referee to stop it and that might be the reason he finally did. The first 6 rounds was a boxing match, the last 2 was assault. When a boxing match turns into assault, you stop the fight.
@olddirtypelican Жыл бұрын
Problem here was both their reputations. No one thought Duran could do it anymore and Moore had built his career off improbable comebacks and wars

This is a great list. The one not here that I always think of is Holly Holm vs Anne Sophie Mathis I. At one point, Holly gets tangled in the ropes and looks like a corpse and, instead of stopping the fight, the ref simply untangles her and allows Mathis to knock her half way out of the ring. It was truly some of the worse refereeing ever.
@decidingpaper6324 Жыл бұрын
The absolute WORST referee in modern boxing history. It should’ve been stopped when she got tangled on the ropes, but the referee wanted a fatality in the ring, Holm not only got revenge but then went on to upset Rousey in MMA

Nice vids, observing pro bouts for 58 years, in my opinion these referees should have been fined if not fired for allowing beat up fighters more punishment and trauma to their brains. Then, on the other side of the spectrum you have a corrupted referee like Richard Steel stopping fights when they are just getting interesting, glad he finally retired. Mills Lane, Arthur Mercante Sr and Joe Cortez are my personal favorites.

Muhammad Ali VS Henry Cooper is a good one. In 1963 (I think?) Muhammad Ali went up against Henry Cooper, who was the first man to knock down Muhammad. Muhammad obviously didn't like that, so he got up and beat the crap out of Cooper. His eye was bleeding like hell, and it even got on his chest and the referees clothing. Ali won at around the fifth round. Not really a late stoppage, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
