TOP Audio SPEAKER UNDER 1000 Wharfedale Denton 85th Anniversary Review
Finding affordable speakers that sound good is at the top of most audiophile lists. Style and sound often come at a high price, leaving one sacrificed for the other. With the Wharfedale Denton 85th Anniversary Speakers, you can have both. These modern vintage looking speakers are among the best speakers for music listening at home. The Wharfedale Dentons have me wondering - is this all the high end speaker you need?

Replaced my beloved RP 600M’s with the Denton 85 a couple weeks ago. I absolutely love them! To be blunt, they blow away the Klipsch’s in every aspect. These are end game speakers for me, they’re that good. The vertical soundstage is insane, they can sound so big, tower like. Baffles my brain and the center imaging is spot on. They have all the detail I could ask for yet still have those warm mids/bass that sound oh so beautiful. It’s amazing how Wharfedale can strike that perfect balance. And I now completely understand the term non-fatiguing. You can literally listening to these for hours on end. I honestly can’t sing their praises high enough. I’m fully onboard with Wharfedale now. Oh yeah not to mention they’re absolutely beautifully crafted. Gorgeous top to bottom. Worth every penny imo ✌️

Listening to these speakers (music) with a Rotel A11 tribute amplifier -- tone disabled. Diverse music from Yello to ACDC sounds great. As the speakers get some exercise over a few days the bass matures to a satisfying degree and I no longer pine for a subwoofer. Dave Hollands double bass fills the room beautifully. The soundstage is magic in effect. Very happy with the Denton 85th Anniversary speakers - Thanks for the review!

Thank you for the review Andrew. I thoroughly enjoy your well-versed reviews and this review, in particular, spoke loudly to me as I am in the middle of deciding if I should go for the Dentons or Lintons. I feel the Dentons would suit my listening area the most as it is on the small side. My other consideration would be the amps pairing. At the moment, I am running a Rotel A12. Have you had any experience with Rotels? and if so would you see Wharfedale and Rotels as a good combination? Your thoughts (or anyone else's) would be very much appreciated. Many anticipated thanks to all and happy listening.

first 30 seconds - RIGHT!....I don't know if I have found my favorite bookshelf speaker yet....but I have been using a thrift shop treasure AR M1 Holographic Imaging bookshelves I bought for $8 15 years ago. I still keep coming back to them over and over again...they have helped me master recordings, used as 5.1 fronts, been part of vintage sliver face pioneer vinyl setup I had, monitors for my modular synth and synth no PC live rigs...so many things...but I do have the 80 Denton coming...

Paradigm Monitor SE Atoms based on your recommendation. They're on my computer flanking my imac keeping me sane every day. The highs and separation are really impressive as well as the projection. While I'm not shaking walls, they're not lacking in bass and really only droop off on extended lows from hip-hop, EDM and modern soundtracks. As someone who gets annoyed with excessive bass dominating modern mixes, I really don't miss it all that much.

I bought these exact speakers, and the U-turn Orbit on your recommendation, and was not disappointed. They are beautiful and have an incredible center image. The only thing I’d add to your review is that they need some attention paid to placement to get the most out of their imaging and sound. Adding a sub didn’t hurt either.

Alright, I just bought a pair and received them 3 days ago...12/23/22. Set them up on stands at ear level. Running on a Cambridge CXA60 amplifier. Source is a BluSound Node 2i running Tidal Hifi. Also running with two subwoofers. They are set up slightly toed in and I have not experimented with other placement as of yet. In short, they sound great right out of the box. Not sure why some reviews say the treble is too bright. Makes no sense in my listening.... I do have a very well damped listening space, lots of furniture, carpeting, and being that it's an attic, the walls are sloped at near 45 degree angles...which helps scatter reflections. The treble seems spot on under these conditions. I am treble sensitive to a degree and I have no issues with the treble. As Andrew says, the imaging is fantastic...Especially the center image. I really notice it while watching a movie in 2 channel....The Dentons disappear....even off axis I was fooled into thinking the dialogue was coming directly from the tv.. The midrange is definitely the star here. Very full and smooth. Adele sounded dreamy compared to the Klipsch RP600M's I am coming from. Those never really did it for me. The cabinets are truly beautiful. They look and feel like a well built speaker. I have not listened without my subwoofers, so I cannot comment on whether they go very deep in the bass, but I don't have even the slightest of concerns with my subwoofers on, so no need for me to test that. Loving them so far!

Thank you for confirming my opinion on the sound of the PATD album. I love the band and listen to them a ton, but couldn’t get the high end to sound good, especially on my Klipsch speakers. It’s not only the latest album either. I thought it had to be part of my system - the preamp in my Marantz, my amp, my speakers, surely it had to be on my end. You may have just saved a good chunk of my sanity, lol. Thanks Andrew!

Cool fun video! The shape of these reminds me of my Design Acoustic Speakers as they also are the deeper than high or wide. I heard my PS-6 speakers think it least 30 years ago. They cost more than I had but about a year later I found a pair of their metal stands for sale and bought them. Jump ahead at least 20 years and thanks to Ebay found a pair of the speakers with surrounds totally shot and got them for around 60 bucks. Got the surrounds replaced and still can not believe how fantastic they sound. Plenty of deep base, great mids and fantastic upper range. The stands are way cool and even have a slight upward tilt to expand the listening stage. I always think if the mids and highs are great it's the base that separates the men from the boys and these deliver wonderful natural deep base.

We'll have to wait and see. We actually were offered the Lintons but I turned them down in favor of these as I a) just didn't want ANOTHER bigger speaker in the house right now (we have several you haven't see yet) and b) I like bookshelves. If this video does well, I'm sure a Linton review would happen eventually.

I'm really enjoying your content. Well done, Andrew! I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Harbeth p3esr XD. I owned Compact 7's but had to give them up bc I didn't really have the space for proper placement. I'm considering the P3 paired with a Naim Unity or Hegel H190. Any chance they (Harbeth XDs) could make an appearance in an upcoming review?

Hi, are you going to be reviewing the Wharfedale Lintons or evo 4.2, in the future? I'm looking at both of them, with a Musical Fidelity M5si.

These are incredibly attractive with your console. The other speakers that get my vote with your room are the larger Klipsch Heresy. Certainly more expensive. Good review.

How did the Arylic do with the Dentons? I really like this little amp and drives my Q3020i beautifully. Thinking of buying the Dentons, would be great to able to keep the Arylic.

Picked up a lot of original Denton 2xp (built 1971) loudspeakers from eBay in the UK for just £30 and they sound amazing even with them being nearly 50 years old!! Wharfedale has just been doing it right forever now.

Great review, Andrew. You have me intrigued about these speakers. Curious about how low they go and if they need a sub, which I suspect they would. Did you happen to try them with a sub?

Thanks Andrew for another great review. Just an observation, but I don’t recall any review (at least for sometime if you have) on a Kef speaker. Is there a Kef bookshelf or Floor standing speaker review on the cards in the future? I know plenty have reviewed the R3 but I’d love to hear your thoughts and comparisons on this speaker. Thanks again for a great review on the Wharfedale Denton 85th anniversary bookshelf’s 👍

Would these speakers be ok in a 10 foot by 12 foot by 10 foot high carpeted office with a desk, tool boxes and other hard stuff in it? Or might they be too much speaker for that small of a space?

I wish there was somewhere I could go to locally to audition more higher end speakers like this. My experience with quality sound systems is limited, but I think I know good sound when I hear it. I actually went to school for recording tech and my mixes tended to be favored over many others! Currently in my living room, I'm just rocking some early 90's Sansui s-2100u floor standing speakers. I think they sound pretty darn good for what they are.

I'm rocking some 50 year old Acoustic Research AR-4x's. (They're modified, of course, because the original tweeters loved to die.) They're warm, they adore 70's vinyl (having been designed for that format in that era), and they look mid-century fabulous. They're not perfect, but they sure are lovable.

Hi Andrew. I have 2 questions: 1. How would the 85th Anniversaries pair with a Rotel 4 channel 70wpc amp? 2. What would you recommend to power Elac Debut b6's, since they are power hungry.

Out of curiosity, do you use any room treatment aside from rug and chairs? Bass traps or other absorber / reflectors? My speakers here are JBL LSR305’s - to me, their imaging when properly angled is borderline holographic. For my main stereo I have a pair of old school Polk tower speakers, S-series “dynamic balance,” I believe, driven by an Onkyo receiver, and to this day they still deliver great punch and clarity.

Nice review. I am running a pair of B&W CM1s, which you might characterize as mini-bookshelf speakers. Nonetheless, very smooth and very listenable. Beautifully crafted. Picked them out of several larger Golden Ear and Klipsch speakers.

Well, I took a leap of faith based on your revied and bought a pair sight unseen. Was looking for something "small" with enough base that I did not need a sub possibly going into an RV in a year or two. They just came today 719.00 open box from Music Direct in Chicago. The only thing that scares me is I'm coming off a pair of Klipsch K-Horns I just sold two weeks ago. I just keep telling myself there isn't an RV big enough to keep them and there will be a small adjustment...... LOL

By the way, current set up, and this will change when I get close to the RV McIntosh C2300 Pre Amp PS Audio M-100 monoblocks and a twin 12" SVS sub. What can you recommend as a receiver once all the above is gone. Again size or lack of matters ;+)

Some people say that you can buy dentons instead of floor speakers, because they go down to 30 hz, for people who prefer base speakers to a floor one (because they are much easier to install). Do you agree with that? They can fill a relative large room (7m X 4.5m) with sound?
