What part of the country are you in? I'm in N. Mississippi. (Zone 7b) I'm wanting to start hobby beekeeping and are still deciding between top bar and horizontal (langstroth) hives. I may build both over the winter and see how they do here.

This was a 36 minute video. I sped it up. There really wasn't much discussion. Had I left it in it would have sounded like chipmunks. We point out the queen on the 3rd frame. We discuss hive expansion and interleaving blank frames with built out ones. Then we spread food (sugar) on the bottom.

We're in Southern Maryland. We have not successfully made it through a winter with the TBH. The first year it seems they may have had too few numbers and froze. The second year they must have starved. There were tons of bees and despite having lots of full frames of honey going in to winter there was nothing when we did the spring inspection. We love working a TBH. There is no heavy lifting and many fewer bees have access to escape while moving frames. Les Crowder indicates that the brood cluster should be limited to about 12 frames. We didn't.
