(Part 2 of 2) Ian & Ana, co-founders & teachers at Finca Tierra, WALK THE TALK. When you get the chance to visit them, you won't just learn the theory by lectures on slides, but in real life & in some serious action. Finca Tierra is located just outside of the coastal/jungle town of Puerto Viejo.
Over the past 10 years, Ian & Ana have transformed an abandoned cow pasture into a super productive tropical homestead. In fact, this farm is so abundant, that any of their needs can be met right on site. You can be sure that this tour will be packed with so information & inspiration to pass along! (It was a big challenge condensing the footage into only 2 parts.)
If you missed part 1, you can see it here - • Theory Becomes Reality...
In this 2nd half of this epic tour throughout the highlights at Finca Tierra, we get to spend a little more time with the plants & also get to learn a lot more about the various processes throughout the farm & education facilities that keep them running so efficiently. From creative composting systems to rainwater collection, from bamboo construction to providing 100% of the needs to the residents & visitors of this permaculture education center, you should know that we haven’t even scratched the surface of what can be experienced while visiting Finca Tierra.
If you are searching for a well-done Permaculture Design Course that shows a live/active demonstration of all that is encompassed within a PDC, Finca Tierra is currently hosting 5 immersions per year. To learn more about their programs & events, check them out at:

Even if you are not able to travel to visit Finca Tierra, we suggest following them through their Instagram: / fincatierra

One thing I've noticed is they do not talk about selling product, money. Obviously because they collect fees for teaching which is fine...but it's not directly applicable to a surviving on a farm. Lots of there processes are. The fish ..pools is really interesting. Even if it would be possable to reduce the amount of feed you'd have to buy. The small size makes sence , and a bug trap that's genius... Im gonna try it...cheers colombia..i I'll add we've done commercial avocate and coffee and its almost impossible to make any kind of living, using standard methods. Fertilizer , chemical, labor , weed control suck up most of the money.

How do you like that worm tower ? I heard they bring a lot of unwanted water in the containers.. Is that a problem for rainy season ? Do you put brown waste in your compost bin or is that just for your food? It would be cool to see how wet your charged biochar looks like once ready.

They should get tons of water to collect during their rainy season. How often do you go down there, you have a video from there every little bit, you must really like it down there?! Did he say they were/are getting a lot of phosphorous from chicken manure? Comfrey is supposed to produce a lot of phosphorous. I guess I missed part 1 of this, I'll have to go check it out. Is the "peanut grass" made from the usual variety of peanuts that you buy in the shell? Is the only reason that they grow as a ground cover instead of taller like the usual peanut plants because of this method of bending them over twice and plugging them into a hole?

I would love to learn more about his BSF and Worm Composting system. How can i build one myself? It looks very efficient. The use of the barrels and boxes are intriguing. How do the maggots crawl out? what exactly is coming out from the bottoms of those barrels and how much do you dilute them? When the barrels are full do you wait a week or month before transferring to worm bins? do you have issues of BSF dominating the worm bins? how do you manage that? How long do you let your Biochar Charge with the worm leachate? Don't you think it would be better to use the leachate from the BSF since its more nutrient dense? The worm leachate can be used as a foliar or soil drench more effectively. Anyways, that's just a few questions off the riff. Love the videos Pete and thanks for uploading this one. Greetings from the caribbean

U explained the peanuts as plants that produce nutrients that aren't in your soil, chop the plants down and those nutrients will be released from the plants back into your soil. Question; if you don't have an, let's say nitrogen , in your soil and you planted a plant that makes nitrogen, and cut it down to compost. My question is, where is that plant getting it's nutrition from that you don't have in your land? If you need the plant to create what you DONT have in ur soil, how can it pull it from the soil, if it's not present in the soil!! Example, if you have no nitrogen in your soil, how can a nitrogen fixer suck up nitrogen that's not there? This goes for all nutrient fixers, if the nutrients aren't in the soil, then where's the plants getting them from to fix the missing nutrients? Are you adding fertilizers to that plant so it can suck up missing nutrients? Cause it can't suck them up and store them, if there not in the soil to begin with. If it's possible please explain how!

about the MOJITOS , its very easy , you just need lime , mint , white rum and soda water or sprite. Muddle the lime and mint together (preferably with a mortar and pestal) crush the ice by hand ,either in the mortar and pestal or with a cloth and smash hahah ( putting the ice in a blender will turn it into a slushy! yuck!) then mix them all together .. garnish with mint and lemon ... like this comment if you want me to make a vid tutorial on it .
