Finding the best dual sport motorcycle for beginners can be tough with all the great dual sport bikes out there on the market today. We’ve been very fortunate to have some brand new beginner friendly dual sport models hit the market in the last couple years, so while I stand by the recommendations in my original “Best Dual Sports for New Riders” video, I figure it’s about time for an updated version that reflects the cool new options out there for new off road riders. Here are my top 5 best dual sport motorcycles for brand new riders and/or riders who are new to off road riding.
All of these bikes are unintimidating, easy to handle and learn on, very reliable, super capable, and inexpensive to buy and maintain, making them perfect for a new rider. All of them also have room for a new rider to grow and continue to enjoy as their off road riding skills improve. One of them is sure to be the best beginner dual sport motorcycle for you.
#5 Yamaha TW200
No surprise here. The TW200 is a bike I recommend basically every chance I get. It’s a truly unique -looking bike and is quite possibly the most beginner friendly dual sport bike of all time, thanks to its low seat height, manageable power, and the ample traction provided by its ATV-style tires.
#4 Yamaha XT250
The XT250 is the TW200’s younger brother and is a more traditional-style dual sport bike. As a much newer model, the XT250 has a more modern design with fuel injection and front and rear disk brakes. It’s still one of the least intimidating bikes on the market for new riders, though, thanks to its very low (for a dual sport) 31.9 inch seat height.
#3 Kawasaki KLX230 (Test Ride Video: • MORE Than Just a Begin... )
I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to take the KLX230 on an extended test ride recently, and I have to say I came away a lot more impressed than I was expecting to be. It’s an easy to ride yet super fun and capable small-displacement dual sport that has a lot to offer both new and experienced riders alike.
Another big advantage to the KLX230, at least right now, is that they seem to be readily available at dealerships while the other bikes on this list are a bit harder to get at the moment.
#2 Honda CRF300L
I haven’t yet had the opportunity to test ride a CRF300L, but its predecessor the CRF250L was my first dual sport bike and I put thousands of miles on it, so combined with the overwhelmingly positive reviews and response from the dual sport community, I feel very comfortable recommending it as as a very solid option for a brand new dual sport rider.
#1 (though it’s really pretty much a tie between the CRF300L and this one) is the Kawasaki KLX300. (KLX300 Test Ride Video: • KLX300SM Test Ride and... )
Also brand new for 2021, the KLX300 is also an upgraded version of a beloved previous model (in this case the KLX250). Like the CRF300L, the KLX300 is a fuel-injected, lightweight-ish, very capable dual sport bike. The differences between the two are not huge, but the KLX has a slightly bigger engine and slightly lower weight, while the CRF has longer suspension travel, more ground clearance, and a lower seat height.
If you’re in the market for your first dual sport bike, I’d strongly encourage you to check out and consider all five of these bikes. They’re all going to be awesome for a beginner and have all the capability you’ll want or need whether you’re planning to ride around town, tear up some logging roads, or even hit the trails.
You really can’t go wrong with any of these bikes and the differences between them are really minimal in the grand scheme of things, so my advice is to test ride as many as you can and go with the one that feels right to you. Or, since they are kinda hard to get your hands on right now...just go with the one you can actually find.

Fully agree with your list! One thing I would strongly recommend is that if it is your first bike, opt for a used one over a new one. My first bike was only ridden on the farm as a boy, and after five years of riding it only the wheels, frame and engine remained 😂. Good thing it was a Honda - just kept going and going, running on the gas I stole out of my dad's truck. The point is that as you push your riding and skill up, those little oopsies do occur from time to time. Rather have it be on a cheaper used bike than a brand new one.

Good list! As I am a Honda fanboy, I would have the CRF300L on top, but I haven’t ridden either one, and they seem to be so similar, it could no doubt go either way. I do own both Yamahas on the list. The TW200 is such a unique bike, and I often say that riding it is like riding a 4 wheeler with 2 wheels. The XT 250 feels more like a “real bike” when compared to the TW. And by that, I just mean that it has much more of a traditional motorcycle feel, being that the Tdub is such a different animal. They are both fun to ride and have served to get my sons into riding. I’m really enjoying your content!

Hard to beat the TW 200. I'd like to see a fuel injected model with rear disc brake, but aside from that, I think it's perfect the way it is.

I went from many HD's, to Buell, then Road racing (WERA Amateur) , Kawi ZX6R, Yamaha FZ1, a Supermoto phase, lastly an Indian FTR1200. I REALLY want a TW200 after being without a bike for the first time since 1987. Why? IT HAS A CARB, and I can work on it without a dealer; and I want to bring back the feeling of riding just for fun on any surface and not trying to impress anyone or collecting tickets or trophies. ( I have a few of each). I think that the Yamaha TW200 may have a badge of honor of being the last CARBURATED mass produced bike that excels at nothing but fun. I hope Yamaha makes this model until I get my hands on one!

Thanks for another beginner-friendly video. Here in my neck of the woods, “availability” is the whole game. My local Honda dealers are taking payments for CRF300s to be delivered in (wait for it) November. And they’re marking them up $1200 over MSRP with “fees” of all kinds. (I was lucky to find a used 2020 WR250 from a guy who was desperate to sell, at a great price.) Thanks again.

Great job reporting on these bikes. I agree, they are all good machines. If you are going to give the very dated TW a chance to be included in this review I feel the Suzuki DR 200 should be included. I understand that many riders have taken this small duel sport on some extended trips and it does very well. I have a new Kawasaki KLX 230s which includes a lower seat height. I plan to take it on a ride trip.

One motorcycle that no one commented on that could be added to the list is the Suzuki Van Van 200. The last model year for it in the USA was 2019. It is similar to the Yamaha TW200. It has similar fat tires. It is slightly more street oriented. It is fuel injected. So no plugged up carburetor jets if you forget to drain the carburetor bowl at the end of riding season.

hey dork! i circled back to this video, as i'm fully into my journey for my first bike now, and it still holds up mid 2023! i wanted to comment because i have to admit, after 9 months on the waitlist, i just rejected the 300L i had reserved 😱 why you might ask? well, the long and the short of it (heh.) comes down to my stubby little legs... i'm 5'6" ~125lb, and just walking up to the 300L my impression immediately was this thing is absolutely MASSIVE! i was able to toe down on one side barely.. looking into lowering it would cost minimum $500 for a shaved seat and lowering link - or upwards of $1500 for new suspension.. i moved my reservation to the 300LS (new shortie model), but I fear this bike is also just going to be too bulky.. i'll be able to touch the floor on the LS, but the bike is just so honkin wide! maybe its the liquid cooling that is making this bike so much bigger than bikes on the first half of your list?? going into the showroom gave me an opportunity to explore some other options, and i agree with the first half of your list wholeheartedly! the xt250 and the klx230s both felt like reasonabled sized bikes (not only the height, but the overall size of the entire bike). i haven't sat on a tw200 yet, but i'm intrigued! for someone looking to just get into some leisurely forest road riding, maybe the 300L is just overkill for my needs. it's got all the bells and whistles, but maybe i'll benefit from keeping things simple. i'll surely benefit from being able to confidently ride and maneuver a much smaller bike. thanks again for the content!

Thank you for the video. I tried to ride my boyfriend's Yamaha Majesty 400 scooter/motorcycle, and while I did an okay job, it was just too big, too heavy. Then I heard about dual sports and the Yamaha XT250; something that I had my eyes on for a while. I'm definitely thinking about getting that one because of the low seat height. But I'll look into the TW200 as well.

Great video! I would rate them the same. I just picked up my KLX 300 Camo a week ago and was also considering the CRF 300L. Tight margins but the suspension, engine, and looks of the Camo version made my decision easier to make. I also have a middleweight ADV bike and what a difference to ride the KLX. So light and nimble with impressive power and good suspension that makes a difference when riding off-road. If I were a beginner rider that planned on using the bike as a commuter and for off-road, I would probably lean towards the CRF with ABS and the better informative display for shifting and a gas gauge included. KLX for more intermediate riders with longer-term enjoyability without having to upgrade much.

Thank you for the “intermediate” comment regarding the KLX 300. I bought the 2022 Camo version of this bike, and I am not a beginner. You get a sub-$7,000 motorcycle with long service intervals and enough low-end torque to climb walls, if you add a 13 tooth front sprocket. I fail to see the justification for labeling the the KLX 300 a “beginner” bike.

I feel the Wr is still leading the pack for best overall bike its just hard to beat after all these years the 300 are still playing catch up. The Wr was doing everything better then the 300s 13 years ago... I just feel it was a missed opportunity for Honda and kawasaki big time even though the bikes are nice and they are going to sell the real riders no if they would have came with that 35-40hp bike it would have changed everything.

Yes, a video for me. I’m riding a BMW K1600B and have been on the road for many years. I have not which I now will want to ride off road on beginner trails. Questions: 1. How many miles will I get on a 2 gallon tank let’s say on the KLX? 2. Being a dummy, I’m have a hard time understanding suspension travel front and rear. Is that how far the shocks compress? I also agree on changing your name like to Sir Dork 😆 Good video, I’m looking into these bikes

On my 2020 KLX250 I got 67 miles per gallon riding a dirt rode with 4,000 feet of elevation gain and about the same on the way home riding the hardball. I love my KLX for the Colorado offroad trails. 5 weeks owning the bike now. For extra fuel I am looking to buy two Primus 1.5 liter bottles and Enduristan bottle holders.

Question about my height for Yamaha XT250. I'm 5'11', inseam about 32". Keep hearing that the XT250 is great for shorter riders, but I'm not short and wondering if this bike will fit me. I've sat on one, but having been riding only a scooter (Honda PCX 150) for 2 years, so I don't have the frame of reference to know what would be comfortable. Looking for first bike to do mostly paved backroads with the capability of doing packed gravel - all rides likely sub-100 miles. I'm very athletic, but at +60 years of age, I don't bounce as well as I used to!!! Thanks for any advice.

Is the suspension on CRF versus the klx that much of a difference? No one has the klx, the CRF I can buy it in 2 weeks. I have no experience with dirt bikes, but I've owned a 1200 ninja and been riding quads. I've got a Polaris sportsman 500. I have Rocky and packed dirt trails all around me.

I might be a bit bias lol, but would take the DR200 over the TW200 and XT250 all day long. It was a little harder to pick it over some of the others though particularly the KLX230, but the little DR still won my money in the end.

Great video ! Newbie to ur channel....QUESTION.?.I'm about to embark on a RTW tour solo. I'm curious what are your thoughts ? I've narrowed it down to the BMW baby gs 310 vs the Honda crf300 rally. However I'm obsessed with the Himalayan and the Husqvarna, but I feel the first 2 are more realistic for me. I've been watching Itchy and seems because the 300 is so new, she has had to adjust and get "other" model parts along her journey. Where as the 310 go has been out since 2017, so way more options for parts. I'd love your thoughts. I currently own a HD 1200 custom, that has been customized for me. But the off road backroads I will be enjoying, it won't work for my RTW trip...thank you so much
@DorkintheRoad
@DorkintheRoad 2 жыл бұрын
Of your options, the Honda is going to be the most reliable, which would be my primary concern in your situation. I see your point about parts availability for the 300L...but have you thought about a 250L rally? Plenty of 250L parts out there and they're rock solid reliable...plus you should be able to pick one up cheaper used. Steph Jeavons rode around the world on a regular 250L, so something to maybe consider. Good luck!

@@DorkintheRoad I love your 400cc, its an awesome bike. The CRF 250 used here in California for the most part are super close to the new price for the 300, and the 250 is heavier.. Now with that said, I haven't weighed my gear yet.. but, even though Im short at 5'3" Im very strong, so maybe up to 375LBS wouldnt matter as much? ( soccer all my life so My lowers are built ) and Im above avg. upper body too, as a currently injured fire fighter - so theres that.. SO maybe the 250 L Rally is the best?, I would love your thoughts on any other brands, as my inseam is 28" and I like the Yamaha too, and of course, pretty any bike other than a kids bike, Im one legging it anyways.. I just cant seem to decide..Im test riding a few next week, but I really want to narrow it down LOL

What to you think of the KTM 350 EXC-F as a first dual sport? Are they that much more demanding maintenance wise than, say, a KLX 300? I know there's a big price difference, but I like the idea of lighter weight, and a local dealer has a 2023 KTM discounted which is making it more tempting. Any thoughts?
@DorkintheRoad

I think it's a bad idea. That's a very different bike than a KLX300. Harder to ride and maintain in a lot of ways. The 350 is a better second bike in my opinion

Not really any such thing as a 'beginner' bike ... hype by retailers to sell you something bigger. Bigger does not equate to advanced riding ... it really comes down to your preference and and intended purpose. For tooling around on the acreage, crf300, tooling around the Carpathian Mountains ... Africa Twin size.
