Rest in peace, Marcello Gandini, the designer of Stratos. This is still one of the prettiest car ever made.
@magicoddeffect3 жыл бұрын
The awkward gauge placement actually makes sense in a rally car. Don't need to look at the speed, because there aren't speed limits in rally and the stage layout determines how fast you can go. Don't need to look at the tach, because you can hear and feel the revs. But if the oil pressure drops or the temperature shoots up, you have to stop immediately so you can save the car and possibly avoid a massive crash into the trees. Pedals being over to the right is probably because the car wasn't meant to have road seats, either; a rollcage would push the seat placement to the right just a bit and a racing seat doesn't anchor the same way anyways.

Lancia's heritage is very different to most . Cutting edge engineering and quality, their way. Copy nothing , always their fresh designs. They then have haute couture styling , intense driving experience. This makes for an elegant car which will always be in fashion, you can race them as well as they always did. Beyond that they have a personality that is very different.

@@michaelmeliambro5117 As a thoroughbred rally car and rolling art, it was, especially compared an American floatboat. Considering the technology of the day. It is as good as humanly possible, judging by the times they achieve on rally stages. Meanwhile, the Americans have an 8l engine that produces 250hp, and only 140 of it goes to the wheel, and the body weighs 3 tons. Not even counting the malaise era. The landyacht will also have a separate chassis and trampoline suspension that makes the handling rubbery, and the heavy engine makes it massively front-heavy even with 3 tons of chrome in the back. It will unsafe to turn right while going faster than 20mph, and a careful driver can get 7 miles per gallon. Sounds real good to me.
@michaelmeliambro51172 жыл бұрын
@@charlesc.9012 At least said "land yacht" would be built to last. When was the last time you heard of an Italian car that was reliable??? And besides that, the Lancia could only develop a pitiful 190 HP, at best, compared to 250 from the Yankee-mobile.
@charlesc.90122 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmeliambro5117 Italian cars before computers were average in reliability. There was nothing wrong with them until the Japanese raised the bar. Land yachts were still only built to last about 200k miles, so they weren't actually better. They were actually worse because American fit and finish was always inferior in the age. It doesn't matter that Yankee-mobile makes 260hp because only 140 of it would reach the wheels. This is fact because that is what happened when horsepower was no longer measured at the flywheel in the malaise era, leading many engine models to lose half their rated power overnight. Land yachts also weigh 3 tons, while italian cars weight about 2000lbs. That makes a huge difference in reliability as well as performance. American engines always had unusual amounts of torque, but still underwhelming for an 8 cylinder engine, and worse than diesel engines. Italian powerplants definitely rev more freely, so they actually get peak horsepower more consistently. Remember that power and torque on paper is only real at a certain engine rpm, so American engines are really not getting close to touching European or Japanese engineering. The Italian car always had the higher power-to-weight ratio, which is the actual thing that determines acceleration. So Italian cars could really keep up while consuming less than half the fuel a fatmobile needs

You can feel the traction. You can hear the revs. You don't know how much oil pressure there is in the crankcase, or how much manifold pressure is there in the turbo/supercharger. Those are the gauges you need on a race car to glance at every now and then to ensure you're treating the engine well. So Clarkson and Hammond, this tells me that the Stratos was built only to race.
@eloitremols3 жыл бұрын
Don’t know if you are aware but the engineer who worked on the design of this car was Nicola Materazzi, the same man who designed the famous Ferrari F40 all on his own. @@jackie1825 I think Gandini also penned the Countach. Given the choice I would take the Miura over a modern Lambo any day. My first car was a Fiat Bertone 850 spider. The rear lights are identical to those on a Miura.
