My first few times watching this movie, I don’t know what was happening with my brain (I think it was just overwhelmed with emotions), but I didn’t really catch that line. I heard him say sorry, but my brain just didn’t totally clue in and for some reason I think I just assumed that he was apologizing to Rooster? After a few watches, that line finally registered for me… and I had to pause the movie so I could cry for a minute because it hit so hard haha

Regarding "Penny", the character was cleverly picked up from the original. When Maverick was getting chewed out on the carrier after Cougar resigned the XO rants about "with a history of high speed passes over 5 controlled towers and one admiral's daughter" Goose turns to Mav and whispers "Penny Benjamin?" and Mav shrugs.

@@trhansen3244 I know I'll be lambasted for this, and it's meant as a genuine question so please don't hate... but why does it have to have LGBTQ representation? I can see that somebody could be disappointed but why were you dismayed? Was the community promised that a character would be LGBTQ? What about the first film called out to you and said that there must be LGBTQ representation? The introduction of Phoenix balanced out the testosterone from the first film making it relevant today, but in no way did either film raise, imply or disrespect sexual orientation that needed addressing. Indeed introducing that element would of needed a significant part of the film to be introduced in a way that made sense and have a purpose to the storyline based on the existing characters..

Another thing about ejecting from Mach 10, if the US ever actually builds Dark Star someday it’s speculated that the pilot alone wouldn’t eject but an entire cockpit capsule would theoretically protecting the pilot. If we ever get that far in scram jet research I’m sure the plane would likely be autonomous anyways.

You pointed out in the bar scene that when we meet Penny, David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” is playing on the jukebox. There’s few little fun “easter eggs” in that scene. When Hangman selects the song on the jukebox he presses 86 - the original Top Gun came out in 1986. The song he selected was “Slow Ride” by Foghat, and while that’s playing he is teasing Rooster about his cautious flying style. The playing of “Great Balls Of Fire” is probably Rooster’s party piece, Phoenix immediately knows what’s up which suggests it not the first time some of them have heard him play it. Fun fact about that - Miles Teller learned to play the song, that scene is a live take which they recorded and added to the OST, they also edited a music video from that scene, so Teller has an officially credited cover of “Great Balls…” The opening scene wasn’t just a nostalgia trip, it was done as an homage to Tony Scott. It’s almost shot-for-shot, similar lighting, the same music etc. There’s a lot of foreshadowing dialogue throughout that suggests Maverick may die: “Someone’s not coming back from this.” “I’m never gonna leave you again.” “We’ll talk when we get back.” “If I don’t see you again Hondo, thank you.” The scene where they commandeer the F-14: when Rooster says “how are we gonna get this museum piece in the air?”, it’s very fitting as the ground scenes were filmed using the F-14 that’s displayed at San Diego Air and Space Museum. They shipped it out to location, put it together and even got the canopy working. But as with all the US Navy F-14s, the engines had been stripped when they were retired, so it is indeed a museum piece that can’t get in the air. The aerial scenes with the F-14 are CGI, but they look absolutely fantastic. That ending is so wholesome. “Thank you for saving my life.” “It’s what my dad would’ve done.” Glen Powell, who plays Hangman, is in another aviation movie due out soon called Devotion. I think it’s set in WW2. He also gained his pilot’s licence shortly after Top Gun: Maverick wrapped. He had gained enough flight hours sitting in the backseat of the F-18 to take his test, and when he passed it, Cruise sent him a message and a congratulatory present - a stunt driving session.

The F/A-18 Super Hornet comes in both single and two-seat models, which is why Maverick and Rooster were by themselves. In the two Hornet's that were two seaters, there was the pilot and the back seater was controlling the laser for the laser guided bombs. Also, that is actually Tom Cruise's P-51 Mustang shown at the beginning and end of the movie.

The plane at the end is the legendary P-51 Mustang - arguably the best fighter plane of WWII. It was the first plane with the range to escort Allied bombers all the way to Berlin and it decimated the Luftwaffe. Germany was finished without air cover. Props to the people involved for understanding that the F-14 was almost as much of a character in the original Top Gun as Maverick, Goose, Iceman, etc. I was just hoping to get a few nods to it, and maybe get to see one flying during training or something. A plane that couldn't maneuver wouldn't be good for much. From the map, it looks like he takes off from China Lake(?), flies east to Colorado, makes his turn past Denver and Cheyenne, flies west and breaks up over southern Idaho. If he hadn't gotten carried away, I guess the plan was to hit the mark, and then shed speed, make another turn over the Pacific, and return to base.

The air wing on board were The Jolly Rogers and their insignia was a skull and cross bones. "Bob" is the most realistic call sign in the movie. You don't pick it. It's typically given to you as a reminder of something you'd rather not remember, or as an insult. If you get Bob, it's because you are so boring of a person that you weren't worth the time it takes to come up with something creative. In the first movie when Maverick tells Charlie his call sign, her response is "Did your mother not like you?". That's because while the audience sees it as 'Hell yea! He plays by his own rules', Iceman was right. That's not considered a good thing in the military.

The P-51 Mustang is Tom's personal aircraft; he also flies a jet. To help prep for the movie, he took each flying actor up and gave them some G's, rolls, etc. Also for the movie they used two-seater F18's with the actors in the back so if you know the cockpit layout you can see a few tell-tale things but few would know it. Also they had to fit the cameras in there, and so the actors themselves had to run the cameras and talk to the pilot to set up the shots, rolls, etc. Great job by everyone. In one interview Tom said the opening scene where he flies over the Admiral and the security shack roof blows off wasn't planned, but it looked so good they left it in. Great reaction! The angled deck on modern carriers came after several accidents. Previous carriers were built with straight decks, but planes would come in, miss the wires then plow into parked jets or personal. The angled landing area was needed, especially when the faster jets arrived on the scene in the '50s. If they missed the wire(s), they added power and went around for another try. I think the British came up with the idea. Soon after, older, straight deck carriers were converted to angled decks also. The Brits also developed the Mirror Landing System which evolved to the FLOLS which helps keep Naval pilots on the proper glideslope for catching the #3 wire

I'm sorry...but I'm a professional request pianist/singer who's played around the world for the last 33 years. Everybody in the world knows "Great Balls of Fire" and wants to hear it and sing along to it. Easily one of the top 10 requested songs in the world-even from Millennials, Gen X and Gen Z'ers. You're completely wrong thinking that every person in the bar wouldn't know and sing the words to this song.

The old plane at the end is Tom Cruise's actual plane, and the new girlfriend was the general's daughter, mentioned in the first movie. All the scenes with actor's is real life. They had a special rig, where the actor's actually worked the cameras, and a real pilot was out of sight, doing the flying.

The song "You're Right Where You Belong/Give Em Hell" is a masterpiece. The music is somber, and you can feel the steady uneasy nervousness rise in your throat as it contiunes and we see every member of the team for what could be the last time. But as the song changes from "You're right where you belong" to "Give em Hell" it simulates the adrenaline kicking in. The change from fear of doing to fear of failing and you realize something. There isn't any time to contemplate the fact you might not make it home. You think too much up there, and you're dead.

There can never be enough praise about this movie. Several of the actors are now licensed pilots simply because Cruise ran them into the ground to learn to fly. The football scene was shot twice, and the second scene was the one used in the film, AFTER the actors who had gotten into fantastic shape for that scene pigged out and it had to be re shot later, so what we are seeing is them not at their best form. Val Kilmer's throat cancer was worked into the film for Iceman to reappear, and there was an AI voice program developed to recognize his his jaw and throat movements so Val Kilmer could actually talk, albeit it was computer generated to mimic his voice from his vocalizations. There was no woke BS forced into the movie. The characters were just people. Favorite side character was Hangman. Cliche as it may sound, he's not a team player, and works better on his own. It's extremely dangerous to do that, and the whole reason he was not selected for a team based mission. However, he had no wingman when he saved Maverick and Rooster. His style has it's place.

As a child of the 80’s/90’s l’ll wholeheartedly say Top Gun Maverick is better than the original. I don’t really care about the original film, but I’ll watch this whole movie just for the scene where Maverick does the test run to shows the others the mission could be successful . I saw this in theaters and I thought it was the best movie of the year. I will agree with “Mrs Movie “, the piano scene in the bar is not only corny, but also the most unrealistic part of the movie. Those kids would not know the lyrics to Great Balls of Fire or sing it around a piano! Phoenix was as dope as she was hot!

The Top Gun pilots in the film are all extraordinarily beautiful people. If we assume that the characters are the same age as the actors portraying them, most of the characters are in their 30's. The youngest being 29 and the oldest being 40. So these characters knowing the song "Great Balls of Fire" isn't necessarily a huge stretch, imo.

That Tomcat is currently parked at the San Diego Air and Space Museum Annex at Gillespie Field just east of downtown San Diego! The bar that Penny owned was built for the movie on the West Side of North Island Naval Air Station and was bulldozed down after filming was completed, sadly. I watched the Top Gun with a friend of mine back in '86, and we both went back to see the new one together! It was great, and yes, I had to explain a bunch of stuff to her again! LOL!

The Navy is absolutely notorious for working closely with Hollywood for big recruitment media, like Top Gun, but many other examples. The Air Force (or any of the other branches, really) for whatever reason doesn't really do that. The Air Force does do offensive missions with planes from overseas bases, and they do a lot of bombing missions that take off from the continental US and (after a number of refueling sorties) strike targets overseas, but the nice thing about the US Navy is they can bring their air base (a carrier) to just off the coast of wherever they are going to do a mission. As far as expeditionary air power goes, the Navy is it, along with the Marines.

Angled flight decks were a development following WWII where designers realized that the improvement in catapults and arresting wires allowed for simultaneous take-off and landing operations on carrier decks if given enough space. Part of this was the redesigned Midway-class carriers that had the landing area off-set on an angle to both allow for more length to land and also some space between the landing area and catapults. It's simply the most efficient method of launching and landing aircraft at the same time, though the process has had its rules written in the blood of accidents and frustrations of pilots and crews.
@Milner62
@Milner62 Жыл бұрын
If it hasnt been answered yet, the smaller angled run way on the deck is for landing. It is where the landing wires are for the tail hooks to grab. The front is where the catapult is located at that is steam powered at least last time I checked for launching the planes

What is the angled part on the aircraft carrier for? Basically on the older ones back in WW2 it was a straight deck but if the plane missed the arresting cables and the barricade they would hit the planes not being used at that moment that were stored at the end of the carrier deck. On the newer ones it’s angled so if they miss the cables they can go around.

When it flew over Ed Harris., What you saw was the actual set of the guard post being destroyed, by the turbulence wave, bouncing against the ground., Causing the roof to actually lift off from the structure . And that actually was Ed Harris, getting smacked , in the face by that takeoff turbulence, not a stunt person. A giga Chad move if ever .

Carriers have angled decks so they can launch and recover aircraft simultaneously and it adds some length to the runway - the back seater of a super hornet is not a pilot - he is a WSO - Bob is a WSO as was Goose - Rooster is a pilot - the last aircraft was an F-14 from the original movie and finally the older plane is a P-51 Mustang that belongs to Tom and that he flies regularly... whew!

Older US carriers had a single straight flight deck but it meant that multiple aircraft could only land or takeoff in sequence, never at the same time. Supercarrier landing decks are angled to allow more room for aircraft deceleration, a safe vector from which to continue forward if they miss the wire (known as a ‘bolter’) and simultaneously allowing aircraft to be prepared to launch from the 2 bow catapults.

Great reaction video. I have to agree that Phoenix is my new favorite also. Her lines are classic. From "As long as he doesn't call you a man." to "I'm dead, dickhead." to "NICE" to "Mav's got 5, that makes him an Ace.". Her lines were delivered right on time with just the right sentiment and sarcasm! What do you say we start a new Top Gun series with Phoenix, Bob, Hangman, and Rooster? Start a new story line with them. This was the best movie of 2022 for sure. 👍👍

When tacking into the wind and close-hauled, it's not uncommon for a sailboat to be heeled over that far. If Penny had been single-handing the trip, she probably would have reefed or eased her sails to avoid being overpowered, but with Mav there, she probably decided to show off a bit and make him a little uncomfortable.

Everyone loves this movie because it's faithful to the original while still telling a new story, focuses mostly on the original star of first one instead of pushing some new randos nobody cares about, and doesn't feel a need to push The Message or shit all over the original film. It even managed to make us care about that geriatric romance B-plot by being genuine. And so much of it was real, not CGI. It's an 80s movie made in the 2020s, which is great because people hate the 2020s and the 80s was the second-to-last decade to actually try to give moviegoers something they want to watch.

I noted a bit of confusion regarding that there were 4 planes but 6 aviators for the mission. The reason is because the lead aircraft in each group was an F18-E, which is a single-seat version, and the support aircraft was an F18-F, which is a two-seat model.

The actor Miles Teller who played Rooster wasnt strapped into his seat all the way when flying over the mountian and almost hit his head on the canopy. Like father like son. Also the space suit is for how high up the Darkstar flies for mach 10, where air resistance is lower allowing it to fly faster. And causes less friction so the aircraft doesnt heat up too much

Val Kilmer really does have throat cancer. Even the lines he did have were dubbed because he sounds much rougher IRL. My friend and I saw a screening of the original Top Gun where Val spoke and was selling some of his art. We didn't know he had throat cancer at the time so at first we thought he was F-ing with us. The character Penny is Penny Benjamin who is mentioned briefly twice in the first movie. Goose mentions her in the "your ego is writing checks your body can't cash" speech and Goose's wife mentions her in the bar just before they sing "great balls of fire" In case anyone was interested and didn't know already. The enemy this time is the Russians. They don't say it explicitly, but the "5th Generation Fighters' they are fighting against are the Su-57 Felon fighters flown exclusively by the Russians + the Russian-made HIND Helicopter that was about to shoot Mav. And yes, the SU-57s are capable of the maneuvers depicted. I have personally witnessed the F-22 Raptor doing similar things and that was 10+ years ago. The planes the main characters fly are Boeing F-18 Super Hornet E and F variants. Two of each. E single seat, F twin seat. The rare P-51 Mustang 2-seater is actually owned by Tom Cruise and it is actually him flying it.

No, the enemies absolutely are not the Russians, it's the Iranians. Russians already have had hundreds of nukes for over half a century so why on Earth would the USA bomb their enrichment plant? Russia also of course does not have F-14s, but Iran does. Iran also has access to some pretty new Russian hardware, so they're pretending for the movie that Iran would have Russia's newest jets.

3:35 The angled flight deck on a carrier allows them to take off and land at the same time. The straight deck at the bow is for take off, the angled deck is for landings. 30:53 The F/A-18 comes in single-seat and two-seat variants. For the mission, Maverick and Rooster are flying F/A-18E Super Hornets, while Phoenix/Bob and Payback/Fanboy are in F/A-18Fs. Favourite new pilot isn't a pilot, it's Bob. Also - I think they could do more films with Rooster, Phoenix, Hangman, et al. New generation.

You guys should look up some background on the SR-71 Blackbird. I can’t quite recall all the details but I believe when it was going its top speed and turned it would need several hundred miles to do it in so if it started a left turn over Oklahoma it wouldn’t finish the turn until it was over Nebraska or something like that. And it was nowhere near as fast as going Mach 10
