In case you missed the reference, Jennifer Connelly, who plays Penny, is the admiral’s daughter referenced in the first movie, and is who her and Pete are connected in this movie. Also, being an actual pilot, the plane used at the end of the movie actually belongs to Tom Cruise, and Tom is actually the one flying it during the end/credits scene.

I was 62 when i saw this in cinema, 36 years after I saw the first one. Both films are fantastic but this is just stunning. Tom Cruise definitely knows how to make a movie and he was so right to hold off on releasing it until people could return to the cinema. It should have won best picture but the academy is too intent on giving the awards to films we don't care about or have never heard of, rather than giving it to movies like this that truly entertain an audience from the first frame to the last.

Yes guys! One of my favorite movies in many years. Seeing it in a theater was a rush. And if y’all didn’t know, the vast majority of the aerial footage (minus the explosions and such) was done for real. The actors were seated in the rear seat of the F-18s while actual Navy pilots were doing all of the stunts and aerial choreography. The G’s being pulled and the strain on their faces and in their voices weren’t just the actors acting, they were experiencing them first hand. THIS is how a movie should be made. As much practical effects as possible and the CGI is just used for polish.

The prop plane at the end is the P-51 Mustang. WW2 legend. Pilots to this day call the P51-D the most perfect fighter plane ever built. Some say “best prop fighter”. It is supposedly every US military pilot’s dream to fly the Mustang just once.

P-51 has center-of-gravity issues due to the additional fuel tank that gave it the legendary long range (you have to burn off the center tank before going into the drop tanks), and it could not take as much battle damage as a P-47 or P-38 could take.

A scramjet is an engine that can burn fuel at supersonic speeds. In conventional jet engines the air flow in the engine has to be slowed to subsonic in order to burn the fuel and, therefore, the speed is limited. Theoretically, a scramjet could go Mach 20 or more. Imagine being able to fly anywhere in the world in 2 hours or less. On an F-14 Tomcat you can extend the wings to get more lift at slower speeds.

There are currently two versions of the F/A-18 I've been behind the stick of both through different squadrons. The E is a single seat variant which is what characters like "Mavrick", "Rooster" and "Hangman" were made to look like they were in the other is the F/A-18 F and like the Tomcat is manned by an aviator in the front and NFO in the back (Known as a weapons system officer /WSO) All the actors and actresses got to experience what it is like to fly as all the scenes were filmed from the back seat of the F. The pull of the G forces is shown on all of them as they pushed themselves to stay awake. The fact that Tom Cruise in his late 50's made it look easy makes me both proud and furious all at the same time. There were times I was right on that brink of night night in my 20's and 30's pulling hard G's like what they pull in this movie.

Fun Fact: Tom cruise was the only person from the whole cast who actually got to fly a real F18 Super Hornet by himself. He had intensiv training before and he had to promise the navy he wouldn't do risky maneuvers and not to scrap it. The scene where he was launched from the USS Abraham Lincoln was actually real but he had to land on a nearby airfield due to the fact only very skilled pilots get to land on an aircraft carrier and he just wasn't skilled enough. An actually Navy pilot had to bring it back to the carrier over and over!

Top Gun is classic and iconic for being a fun and exhilarating summer flick. Still, Top Gun: Maverick elevated everything in character and action, and the women are no longer sex objects. Rooster and Maverick’s dynamics are touching, but Iceman’s cameo got me emotional. Val Kilmer is a badass, and y’all need to watch some of his filmographies. My recommendation would be: Top Secret (1984) Tombstone (1993) Willow (1988) The Doors (1991) Heat (1995) Batman Forever (1995) The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) The Prince of Egypt (1998) Wonderland (2003) Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) and Val (2021) is a documentary following Kilmer’s life and career, including footage shot by Kilmer himself throughout his career. The film showcases his battle with throat cancer and gives a behind-the-scenes view of his personal life, including the childhood death of his brother Wesley, his eight-year marriage to actress Joanne Whalley, and their children Mercedes and Jack. The film is narrated in Kilmer's own words, through his son Jack Kilmer.

whenever I watch reactions to this movie I notice people always forget that the F-14 was built for carrier based takeoffs therefore it doesn't need a super long run way. I understand that it is usually catapult assisted on the carriers but it's wings and body are designed to get as much lift as possible as quickly as possible which is one of the reasons why it was so maneuverable in the air.

The F-14 had Variable Wings, this had the benefit of sweeping the wings back for a more sleek aerodynamic position for high speeds to reduce drag and a swept forward position to allow for slow speed maneuvering. With the wings swept forward you have more surface area so you can maintain lift at slower speeds

The aspect that gets me most is Val Kilmer (Iceman) in recent years has had devastating medical issues with his throat that have essentially sidelined him from most acting. Rather than write him out of it they crafted the character to allow him to be as involved as possible AND it made everything that much more poignant.

That is a really dumb concept put forward by small minds. They try to claim that about _every_ story where there's a traumatic event to the main character before the final chapter. A more famous example is Final Fantasy 7; weirdos claim that main character Cloud dies halfway through the game. It's a bizarre attempt at being metaphysical, but it's just a bullshit personal coping mechanism at seeing another do or survive something they themselves wouldn't be capable of.

Sooo, I just became one of your patreons specifically to watch your reaction to this and I plan on sticking around.Tom is an actualy pilot. He has a commercial license, flies aerobatics, has a helicopters license and asked the Navy permission to actually fly the F-18 super hornet in the movie but was denied. However, the scene where he's catapulted off the carrier is real. He also is a master skydiver. Do yourselves both a favor and go see this in the theater before it leaves. Firts though, you should check out as many of the behind the scenes featurettes on youtube that you can. They show the actors training to be able to fly in the f-18's and be able to handle the g forces, how the cameras were set up and so on that makes the theater experience that much more spectacular when you realize the flying sequences were real and not CGI. September is the end of the 120 day contract between Paramount and the theaters. The movie was originally due to be released in 2020 but then the pandemic put the kabosh on that. They were offered a great deal of money from multiple streaming services but Tom and Paramount were adamant about waiting because they thought fans should see it the way it was meant to be seen-on the big screen. And they were absolutely right!

A who’s who-job wise…… John Hamm played Cyclone, the 3-star Admiral who hates Maverick. His character has 2 jobs in the movie just as his real life counterpart. He is Commander, Naval Air Force, Pacific. This means he commands all Navy Aviation in the Pacific Fleet. Operations, training, readiness, etc. There’s one for the Atlantic Fleet as well. In this capacity he answers to the Commander of the Pacific Fleet which in the movie is Iceman. His 2nd job is Commander, Naval Air Forces. This means he’s in command of all US Naval Aviation Operations WORLDWIDE. He is based in California & reports to the Chief of Naval Operations who’s at the Pentagon. Not unusual for him to have both jobs since Pacific Fleet is the largest Fleet. Charles Solomon played Warlock, the 2-star Admiral who’s almost always with cyclone. His job is Commander, Naval Aviation Warfighting, Development Center. He’s based at NAS Fallon in Nevada. There are 3 schools each with its own commander & all 3 commanders report to him. One of the 3 schools is Top Gun. Back in the 1990s Navy moved Top Gun & a 2nd school from Miramar to Fallon where the 3rd school was located. Btw the production company paid the Navy over $11,000 an HOUR to “rent” the F/18’s & the Navy Aviators that flew them. You didn’t think the actors actually flew the planes, did you? Lol.

They would’ve had to pay more if they weren’t on Navy training time. It was a give and take… “you guys do your training, but take our cast with you so we can get footage.” It saved them a lot of money. The canyon runs are actual training exercises, there’s various places around the world where you can go to get a view of them in action (“Star Wars” Canyon in California, USA, the “Mach Loop” in Wales). I think that’s part of the reason why they have the low level canyon approach for the mission… free footage as it was part of the pilot’s manoeuvre training.

Yes.... the Mach 10 to 10.4 is insanely fast as it equates to between about 7500 to 8000 mph in real life. Rockets leaving Earth pass this all the time and travel ~18000 to 22000 mph in orbit, but as far as we (civilians) know there isn't an (air breathing) engine that can sustain this speed within Earth's gravity for now.... but the government lies to us all the time, so it may be already in tests. Who knows?

Ejecting at that speed (Mach 10.4) he would be pink mist I know of 3 pilots ejecting at Mach 1+ . One was torn in half, two suffered multiple leg/arm fractures (one of them bled to death)

I’m assuming something as advanced as that jet has some sort of ejection pod or something because, like you said, ejecting at that speed would prolly disintegrate him

It took me a few watches to actually realise something - when selecting the crew for the mission, Cyclone says “choose your Foxtrot teams”, I wondered why they were Foxtrot. Then it clicked - the official NATO designation for the two-seaters is F/A-18F (Foxtrot is ‘F’).

I think Hangman is suppose to be Maverick in the first movie (dangerous, cocky). Rooster is more Iceman like: reserve, by the book. Also Rooster did win that chicken, he pull out later and behind Mav (thus in a position he can shoot). But he hesitated and allow Maverick to pull that cobra bs

In that game of chicken that shows how Rooster was more like Iceman too. While they were below the hard deck Maverick would have taken the shot like he did with Jester.

From the behind the scenes videos, they said that going Mach 10 will take you 19 minutes to get from Los Angeles to New York. Also, in case you missed it or I missed you saying it but all the airplane scenes were real and the actors are actually in the F-18 jets!!! When Tom Cruise catapults from the air craft carrier, it’s for real!!!! Also, the prop plane at the end (P51 mustang WW2 plane) is Tom Cruise’s personal plane that he owns and he is actually flying it (with Jennifer Connelly in the back).
