In this weeks edinburgh/scotland vlog video we take a wander round central Edinburgh, and look at some of the top Harry Potter related sits to visit. We see some of the sites that inspired J K Rowling when she was writing the Harry Potter series. Like Greyfriars Kirkyard, Tom Riddles grave, Victoria street which inspired Diagon Alley.
We also visit some of the sites where J K Rowling wrote some of the Novels like- Elephant Cafe, Spoon cafe which was Nicolson Cafe and the Balmoral Hotel where it all ended. This really is one of the top things to do in Edinburgh.

I’m so glad I found your videos, I’ve been binge watching all night :-) My husband and I are leaving in two days for a week and a half trip to Scotland (from Michigan,USA another place in the world where you can experience 4 seasons in less than a week) ending with 3 days in Edinburgh! I’m so excited!

The harry potter sights were the highlight of my trip to Edinburgh when i visited a month ago. There is a free tour which starts at 3pm from the Greyfriars Bobby statue which is seriously good. (you get a wand for the duration of the tour) I had previously walked around the graveyard trying to locate Tom Riddles grave but had no luck on my own. Gladly the location was included in the HP tour. The directions to the grave are spot on and will come in handy for other people. I have also read there is a Knockturn Alley somewhere too?

I did not know about a knockturn alley. I shall have to research.

@@ClanBroonford I saw another video which mentioned Victoria Street. I think it said that it inspired Knockturn Alley. I may have gotten it mixed up with another Harry Potter Street. It's possible that Daigon Alley was based on the upper level of Victoria Street which are not painted so far as I am aware. (Not been to Edinburgh for quite a few years.

Thank you for this. It's great, I said to my daughter three years ago on her Hen weekend, this reminds me of Harry Potter. We were in Victoria street and I said this is Diagonal Alley! My two daughters said, come on mum, let's get to the restaurant. I said no, look at this, they said well we're not into Harry Potter so don't know 😄 I just knew instinctively going around Edinburgh that a lot was reminiscent of the film. Unfortunately, being the only HP fan in the 10 hens, I was on my own! Just one of those moments now, when you say 'I KNEW IT!' 😄😄😄. Thank you so much ⭐️

I lived in Edinburgh for a yr. I used to walk from my flat, to Edinburg Castle, the Royal Mile, & I went to their underground mall on Prince's Street... Great memories !!! Love these vids. !!! 💙💙💙 Got any vids of the Bruntsfield School where Sean Connery went to?? I used to go there all the time!! (I was a nanny for 3 children) Two of the children went there. The youngest one went to preschool in the basement of a church where JK Rowland went. We never met her. She moved up to Fife after she was too well known in Edinburgh.

If you haven't read it yet, may I suggest that you find a copy of 'Reading Round Edinburgh - A Guide to Children's Books of the City published by Floris Books. J K Rowling has of course written the Introduction to it. I quote - "All writers dread the question "where do you get your ideas from ?" ......I cannot be sure whether I would have had different ideas for the Harry Potter books if I had written them in cafés all over Birmingham or Bristol, but I suspect I would. ..... Foreign journalists, particularly if wanting to film me, are usually thrilled by Edinburgh's cobbled streets, its winding alleys and looming, dramatic castle. The city offers many Potter-esque vistas, and I know I sometimes disappoint when I say I cannot point to any building or streets that have a direct counterpart in my fictional world. However, I am not always believed when I say this. A man who worked at a certain public school in Edinburgh once wrote to me to invite me to look around, as I had "clearly" based Hogwarts upon his workplace. I wrote back politely to thank him for the invitation, but added truthfully that I had been writing for four years before I had ever set eyes on his school. I thought that would be the last I heard of him, but I was wrong; within days, he wrote back to tell me that I was mistaken, and that I had definitely based Hogwarts on his school. The correspondence ended at that point, so I don't know whether he is still telling people that he works at the "real" Hogwarts : I suspect he is." - The fact is that she began imagining and writing the Harry Potter books on the pavement when she was still in Portugal and later in Bristol long before she moved to Edinburgh. I'm not saying that she didn't continue writing when she got to the Elephant House and elsewhere, but she had already firmly established Hogwarts and all that happened to Harry Potter in her fictional world much much earlier.

Hallo! I'm coming back to Edinburgh this summer in early July, and wondered if there are any HP tours you know of going around. I'd love to see some of the sites. I know Edinburgh fairly well, but most of my knowledge is 10 years old, and it wasn't as HP friendly back then. Any tips?
