Although the front and rear tires on any mountain bike are important, rear mtb tires sometimes don’t get the same attention that front mountain bike tires do. Besides the obvious importance of tire grip, there’s also the fact that rear mountain bike tires take a tremendous beating. In this video installment, Worldwide Cyclery founder Jeff Cayley walks us through the shop's top picks for mountain bike rear tire treads. We cover everything from tire tread pattern and casing strength, to sidewall durability and rubber compounds. Check it out!

I have to say the answer to "compound vs pattern" was spot on imo, having had to save funds at some point and buy a cheaper tire with a not so advanced technology or "special compound", I actually enjoyed the pattern designs a lot more ... but having both a great compound and design is the way to go in the end👌

I have yet to meet someone else using the Onza Citius and Ibex setup which is surprising because of how incredible they are. They’re very reminiscent of the dhf and highroller 2 with similar weight and durability as the exo casing. Plus who doesn’t like some tan-wall action every now and again, it seems to be whats aesthetic these days haha

I really like the DHR2 in the front but would like to see it offered in a 2.5wt casing aand im anticipating liking the Assegai in the front and the Dissector in the rear. Shenanigans. Ive tried the DHF DD / Aggressor DD combo and agreed super fast rolling but just not enough traction on steeper trails. I've been very impressed with the Onza Ibex 2.4 front and rear. It's like a DHF but with a little more rounded profile. That setup has performed really well for me recently on wet rocks, socal mud, and now socal dry conditions and wear has been a lot less than I've gotten out of a DHF or E*13 TRS

Out of this bunch, for all around XC tire with good cornering, Rekon works well. I run it tubeless and modify the pressure to adjust for speed/grip. for 2.25 on the rear, 28-29 psi for speed. 26-27 for grip. Rolls pretty fast at higher pressures of 29-30 psi.
@matthewkramer8613
@matthewkramer8613 4 жыл бұрын
Recently I tried running the Ikon on the back. Ikon is super fast rolling, but noticeably less grip than a Rekon. At lower pressure the Ikon is grippy enough, but less confidence building than Rekon. Ikon is great tire if you are looking for tire that is easy to spin up and maintain momentum, unlike the Rekon where grip is more apparent. Ikon 2.2 at about 25 psi grips well enough, but care should be taken in cornering. Maybe a 2.3 would provide better cornering.. Ikon 2.2 works well over gravely ,loose, and hardpack. loose rocks over hard is ok at lower pressure. Lots of fun over rolling terrain with mixed conditions. Looser rocks and steeper climbs require something more aggressive like Rekon for XC though.

I use an Agressor on the rear and a Nobby Nic up front. Both are similar in terms of grip (i'd guess) but the Agressor is much tougher. The agressor also runs small, so thats not ideal, but it is the reason the weight is reasonable.

Nice video, any comments on Continental? i've used them for the last 2 years and i just done some mountain trails in the alps in a mix of dry and wet condition due to snow melting... over wet rocks dry hard pack, sharp rocks and i was impressed with my Continental Race King MTB Tyre - Wire 2.2 i had no punctures, gr8 grip climbing but bit sketchy on descent over sandy bits... I got these for my London daily xc Riding in a mix of road and forest hardpack riding. For the wet or local bike parks i prefer the grip of the Continental X-King Pure Grip 29er Folding MTB Tyre 2.2

The last two rear tires I've tried were the Maxxis Forekaster (2.35) and the Rekon (2.4). It's a little hard to tell specific differences, but I feel like the forekaster might be my favorite of the two. It's not an enduro tire sure, but if you're not riding enduro conditions all the time, its got great grip and rolls pretty fast. The Rekon seems to roll faster (maybe) but I also feel like it looses its grip easier than the Forekaster did... I'd also say that I think the Rekon is the more durable of the two.
