If you're watching in the UK, as I am, note that our Stihls don't have spark arrestor screens so don't bother trying to find or clean them!

Posters are mentioning things you forgot to address, include my utter lack of knowledge about what I'm doing. Angels...fear...I'm sure you know what I mean. But really, just wanted to drop a note thanking you for this highly informative video, perfect for people like me, "Wait!? What!? There's a filter in the GAS TANK!?" I am now off to see if I can keep her running - the chainsaw I mean, not my ex-girlfriend. However, after I've tried everything you mention, I'll take it to a shop. Oh, by the way. I saw your video on Repair Clinic.

I’ve used my Echo very little and it has leaked oil from day one, it started dying shortly after, now I went to clean the spark arrester only to find my muffler loose and won’t stay tight! Evidently Echo new about the problems hence why Home Depot had them clearances to $99. This was 2-3 years ago. Evidently I threw away $100!

The capacitor in my Stihl 032's ignition failed. It shorted when heated. So after the saw had time to warm up the capacitor, no go. Stihl ought to have paid an extra Deutsche Mark for a better capacitor.

Help!!! I've looked at about 20 videos. No good. I have an Echo CS 400. I used it for about 4-5 days to cut fallen branches---some were maybe 10" thick. No problems. Then yesterday it just decided to die in the middle of cutting. Now it starts, but dies as soon as you pull the trigger. This is a saw with little use--other than the last few days, used three years ago for a day or so, maybe a bit the year before, etc. (In other words, this is NOT something I use regularly). So I cleaned everything thoroughly. Air filter--good. Cleaned it anyway. "Spark arrestor" or whatever over exhaust--good. But cleaned it anyway. Chain and chain bar--good. But cleaned it anyway. Fuel filter in gas tank--good. Gas/build-up of crud, etc.--no, since I've gone through 2-3 tanks of gas in the last week. And when I started it after 3 years, it started right up and worked fine. And yes, I have additives in the gas, and yes, the chain oil compartment is filled. One video said to start it, then take the brake off and adjust the idle screw (T). But if I take the brake off the engine revs like crazy and the chain zips around and around. According to the video, the chain shouldn't move. So that didn't work. The 'H' and 'L' adjustment screws are some fancy heads that probably need a fancy screwdriver. But they are inset so far I can't see them that well. If you take the time to answer, please treat me like a 4-year old. Please. Most of the videos say things like "Now torque the fajizzle just so and see what happens to the glooper stopper..." Huh? "Back out" a screw? WTF? I can back out a car, but not a screw. There are words for this: 'clockwise' and 'counter-clockwise'! And please do suggest things I just spent four hours doing. Trust me, I've done them.

I have a CS 305. I put on a new carburetor. New purge bubble, fuel tank vent, fuel filter and new fuel lines. Also new plug and air filters. My chainsaw had been hard to start. It's about 10 years old. The chainsaw now starts and runs well. However, after it uses about 2/3s of the tank of fuel it starts to die. It will not run in any position but upright. It will run a bit longer with 1/3 choke. I don't have the answer yet but I have ordered a new "spiral fuel line". The replacement carb came with new line but not the spiral line which goes into the tank. The new line (straight line) did not work and I had to put the old spiral line back in to get the saw to run past idle. You do need to get a small Philips screwdriver and turn your idle screw counterclockwise to slow the idle. The H & L are actually just flat head screws, however, they have 'limiter caps' on them. You have to pull the carb out of the housing and then you can pull the 'limiter caps' off the screw heads. My new carb came without limiters. It's possible that you need to rich the fuel mixture. This is done by turning the "L" screw back counterclockwise until the idle begins to slow down. This would have the duel effect of slowing the idle speed and rich-ing the fuel mixture which will help it accelerate instead of dying when you pull the trigger. The limiter caps will limit how far counterclockwise you can turn the screw. If you can't turn them far enough to cause the engine to begin to slow down, then you will have to remove them to get a proper adjustment. The one other significant possibility is the fuel tank vent. It may have become clogged. The fuel tank vent allows air into the tank while keeping fuel from running out. If it is clogged, a vacuum will form as the fuel is drawn out of the tank and it will eventually keep the fuel from flowing resulting in your engine dying of fuel starvation. If your engine dies, then you open the fuel cap (letting air back in), restart the engine and if it runs a bit then dies, it's a good bet the fuel tank vent is clogged. My vent was damn difficult to find and replace. I nearly took the whole saw apart before I found it. I had to remove the pull start cover AND the flywheel to get the vent filter out and replace it. The fuel tank vent kinda looks like the fuel filter. It's a little black plastic container, a little smaller than the fuel filter, and it plugs into the end of a length of fuel line which comes out of the fuel tank though the same grommet holding the purge bubble line.

Did you ever solve the mystery? My saw is doing the same thing. Brand new saw, day one. Started sputtering and starving about 20 minutes in, I took a break for lunch and went back out for round two. It started great again but it died about 20 min later. Now it does the same thing as yours when starting it.

@mamlukman Жыл бұрын
@@PL-qw2gy Well, if it's brand new, I'd just return it. I "solved" my problem by taking it to a guy who cleaned the carburetor for $50. He wasn't just a "guy," he had a degree in mechanical engineering and worked for a some manufacturing company. I watched him clean it, and clearly it was beyond my pay grade. He had all the right tools and knew exactly what to do. Even so, it took him about a half hour. His advice was never to use regular gasoline with ethanol--even if the gasoline is just a month or so old, it's not good. He suggested an ethanol-free gas you buy at Home Depot or Lowe's. I can't remember the name, but you'll find it in the aisle with lawn mowers and chain saws. It's about 1 gallon for $8-9. But well worth it if it saves you aggravation and repair bills. Also, as you can see from the comments, these saws don't like to have near-empty gas tanks. I'd fill it up with the special gas and drain what's left into the can with a funnel.

Not helpful for my Echo CS590. New coil, new plug, new air & fuel filter, new carb, no cylinder scoring and a compression test was performed and was within spec, spark arrestor was removed on day one. It still will not run off of choke and will only run choked for 10-15 seconds.

My Stihl is pretty bad about stalling when it has been off for a bit. It will start and idle, but give it a little throttle and it just dies. It seems to need to tolerate partial throttle for a little bit on cold starts or has been sitting for a few minutes. None of my Echo equipment does this.

Tried all this, didn't help. Solution: buy an electric chainsaw. They don't cut as fast, you say? Try a little comparison: First, the gas chainsaw- pull the cord 5 or six times, it won't start. Wait a moment. 3 minutes have now passed. Try again. Maybe now it will start but will stall as soon as you apply the throttle. 5 -7 minutes have passed. You have done NO cutting , so far. Take an electric one, plug it in and press the start button. maybe 10 seconds have passed and you're already started cutting your 1st limb. So, which one got the job done quicker?

You have to know what you’re doing with a gas saw. Read directions and follow steps. If it doesn’t start in 5 pulls you’re doing it wrong or haven’t maintained your saw correctly. You can’t plug your cord in the woods.
