Should you plant a summer food plot? Summer food plots should be planted in extremely poor habitat areas, if you need to raise the deer numbers on your land, when you are planting corn or if you need to establish a new food plot pattern of use on your land. Summer food plots can actually do more harm than good by creating an unfortunate doe factory or by taking much needed resources from Fall and Winter food plots. If your goal is to create a quality deer herd and quality hunt, then you may want to take a critical eye towards your summer food plot program.

This makes so much sense! Even in my area of Northern Wisconsin it seems there is an explosion of new bucks on camera between October 20th and November 20th. They will hang around if you got the food but if you got a pile of does going nuts on the food plots there isn’t much left by the time the rut gets going and they just move on! This goes against what a lot of people think but it is definitely a reality! For the best hunting got to have that food in late October and November! Great video!

That's great to hear David! It really is a real risk...the doe factory and not being able to build a true quality herd, because you have too many does AND not enough Fall/Winter food. It does against tradition...but I find the best herds are built on lands that do not follow tradition - it isn't even close 🙂 Hope it helps you have a great season!

Jeff, Great comments. I have made the mistake of planting my food plots too early for many many years. It was difficult to have any feed left for the fall, In some cases we had 50-70 does and fawns feeding on our plots, which of course is devastating to the plots. I frost seeded some switch grass yesterday, although getting kinda late to be doing in SW WI. Looking forward to seeing you, hope Diane can join you. Bob

Bob that I love hearing about your land is that you have worked so hard for so long! That means that if major changes are to be made I know that you will work hard to get it done AND a large % of those improvements you have already made can be worked into the plan on some way. I’m constantly getting about 30 pictures every single night of deer bedding and also eating off or near the feeder. I’m gonna be planting my clover/alfalfa/chicory and oat mix in a week or so. The deer in my area have been very good about the height of my plots I only had to mow once last year.

Here in Southern Michigan I have one 3 acre field planted with a clover/chicory/alfalfa perennial mix, which coupled with the abundant browse and surrounding ag fields provides plenty of summer food. The remainder of plots (forage soybeans and brassica mix) won't go in the ground until around July 15-August 1 depending on weather, and will provide fall and winter food.

@johnnyballgame7339
@johnnyballgame7339 5 жыл бұрын
@@donaldbowling8620 I did fine with regular ag beans. I'm not a farmer but a couple tips I could give is first, make sure you mix an inoculant with your beans when you plant, and second do a soil test because beans require a good amount of potassium to thrive...so you may need to add potash to your soil prior to planting. Also a soil test will let you know if you have a pH issue. Beans will grow decent in 6.0-7.0 pH but optimal is around 6.5. So now is the time to be doing a soil test for pH and NPK because that's going to tell you what to do to the soil before you plant.

Great channel Jeff! Learned alot this past year since finding your videos. Question.. I'm in east Arkansas . Never had summer plots because there's hundreds of acres of beans surrounding our land last year. Farmer might be planting cotton this summer instead. If he does, planning on doing a food plot or two to hold current herd and maybe attract more deer. But if he does beans again is it even worth doing summer plots? Fairly new to food plots just asking for advice. Again, love the channel.

I can't say how impressive your videos and knowledge is Jeff. What size habitat hook are you using? Is the seven footer good enough for most situations, or is it better to get the extendable? With maybe 8 acres of mature hardwood with no profitable timber value for its size, is a person better off cutting a few small pockets out to get sunlight to the ground, and then follow that up with hinge cutting the smaller trees? It's a great travel funnel but offers little side cover throughout.

Ty Jeff for all the great videos. I have learned more from your series then any other channels. My question is this: I’m in S/W Michigan and only have very small parcels to hunt. Nothing over 20 acres. I planted my first two food plots last year with Eagle forage beans. 1/2 acre plots on each property. They did great, but lacked actual bean production of any real magnitude. This year I would like to try again with a regular AG bean or Realworld beans. Basically setting these plots up for late season plots. Would you have a better late season food recommendation other then beans for my area?

Thank you very Much Donald I really appreciate that! Beans can be outstanding but I would want to make sure that I am first focusing on October and November. Then if I have enough to cover those two months, I may focus on the beans for December, but every parcel is so different. One word of caution...I have seen beans rotting in the Spring in many states due to a lite winter. Then I have se n them be outstanding in a cold start to the winter. I prefer corn over beans all around...brassicas if the deer eat them in your area. Sometimes a combination of forage and ag beans do well...planned along side each other not mixed...so deer have that ultimate forage early in the season and then actual beans for late. Hard to beat greens and then corn for all season hunting tho.

Thanks a lot David! That really depends on the entire food plot program. There are a lot of times where brassicas are not a fit due to over browsing, limited ag areas, high deer numbers, etc. BUT, I have seen many areas where they just didn't have a chance because they were not a part of a parcel-wide food plot program. Meaning they were not planted alongside another food plot half, and that plot consistency is not spread across the land. I also like oats/pea/bean plantings overseeded with Winter rye a month later. I also like sweetening brassica plantings with beans and peas. Lots of tricks but clover and chicory typically doesn't last a hunting season...I really like higher power annual plantings. I like layered rye options as well. Lots to consider but I hope it helps David!

@@ericvanlaarhoven1484 hi Eric, sometimes clover with brassica as a part of a rotation for the following Spring and Summer in a herd building role...but not for Fall clover at the same time as it will not be appreciable for the Fall. At times though yes, I actually started that practice of combining clover and brassica back in 99 🙂 just depends on the local herds need as it relates to the land and landowners planting resources. Lots to consider, but that practice works very well when needed...including adding chicory.

It is very good woody browse...some forms invasive, some not. If not an invasive then any woody browse is a good addition! Always keep in mind to add soft mass plantings to food plots (although they can NOT replace food plots) and hard mast browse or woody regen browse (ruffage), to cover areas. Again tho with any planting...just needs to be native, natural and a non invasive species.

Would establishing a food plot early on making a safe place for doe educate the deer enough in really high pressured hunting areas to come onto your land during the fall? I have a small property surround by larger property that gets hunted to death by a ton of people from Nov-Jan. Would it be beneficial to always have food available to them or in that situation would cover be more beneficial to attract them to my property during high pressure months?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 5 жыл бұрын
Clayton that is a great question! You can't define a daily movement without food. In your situation it sets up perfectly for allowing your neighbors to feed the deer all Summer...and then when they start to get pressured and the whitetail shift takes place (mid September to mid October), the deer...in particular mature bucks, begin to hit your Fall food that can be planted some time in mid to early August. The bulk of the does can take a lot of pressure on your neighbors but of course some will be on your land too. But the mature bucks will have very little area to focus their daylight activities towards, other than your land. Classic whitetail small parcel management...it works VERY well. You lull your neighbors into thinking they have the best chance at a mature buck due to summertime sightings...and then those bucks focus their daylight movements on your Fall food and cover for the hunting season. You then become the herd influencer for the entire neighborhood... I hope that makes sense Clayton...I appreciate the question!

Ron, I love open soil or partially weeded plots for turkeys... pheasants and rabbits thrive in switchgrass edge habitat mixed with early successional growth pockets. Quail do very well with strip plantings of Milo, Egyptian Wheat, sunflower and buckwheat....and bear use actually repels deer use so I wouldn't actually want to attract them to my plots. Nearly all non whitetail species can easily be taken care of with non-whitetail food plots. In fact a lot of the edge habitat used to create wildlife food and cover, is used by whitetails as edge cover. You really do not need to plant Summer whitetail plots, to specifically take care of other wildlife species...in fact they are better taken care of with non whitetail food plot plantings specific to their needs and complimentary to whitetail screening and cover. I hope that makes sense!

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Tried both, but year round clover plots keep turkeys around better where we are. The soil is so poor, maintaining it is really the only way to keep beneficial things growing. Wouldn't summer bear usage help with the issue of too many does using the plots? ;)

Hi Kyle...planting switchgrass or working screening is a great step folks can do right now. However, many have poor fertility levels, pH levels and lack sufficient weed control. Those are exactly the activities that food plotters are better off spending their food plot resources on, often, than actually planting Summer plots. Planting corn too if there is enough space, adequate soil, etc. Round up ready corn allows food plotters to work on weed control too.

In fact roughly 25 acres out of that 40 acres. BUT, owner charges me way too much to grab any more acres for wildlife, away from hay. Unbelievably poor information that shows how truly unknowable Jeff is on this entire subject. As I mentioned in a comment that was deleted, summer food has nothing to do with 'doe factories." Placing any food (or concentration of does) too near a prime buck bedding area is the culprit. So what's Jeff's advice if the land owner can only hunt the first 2 weeks of October and late planted soybeans are the best draw and his best chance at killing a good buck and achieving his goals? Or what about the northern landowner who's property adjoins natural thermal cover and his best opportunity at a good buck is standing soybeans during the harsh weather of the post rut? His advice means nothing if it doesn't take into account individual landowner's goals, let alone how flawed his actual teachings and beliefs may be. Don't get fooled into believing that this stuff is anywhere near reality becuase it isn't. This just shows Jeff poor understanding of so many topics or perhaps its that he's sold this garbage to too many people to retract now. His claim to walking more properties in more states than anyone in the country may be true, unfortunately when you rarely if ever do the work and see it through you never develop the true understanding of things. Unfortunately his arrogance won't allow him to accept the fact that he may be wrong about some things.
