Sometimes they're very by-the-book and just show the gameplay or cutscenes, while others have some fun with a skit or something even more bizarre. I want to look back at the history of fighting game commercials and see which ones had the strangest, yet effective, methods of telling us we'd love to play this game. Mario tripping Yoshi is somewhat in character when you remember how many players sacrifice Yoshi to save themselves in Super Mario World. Mario getting ahead by any means necessary.

Man,you should do a "What if Avatar:tlab was a fighting game?" So you can guess wich characters should be in and wich moves or archetypes can fit them.

Well Michelle and Emily, even though you're not as well appreciated as Judgement Meter, you surely do make my heart run wild like a bull... and also Mr. Top Ten List, since you've mentioned about planning to make a list of Japanese fighting game commercials in the future, why don't you also plan to make more of these lists that relate to the Japanese perspective at fighting games as well as weird fighting game shenanigans in general sometime soon? Actually we were together in the what if fast food mascots were a fighting game video! But it's been a while since we've done a video together and we def want to do this more!

Out of all of these, the only commercial I don't remember seeing before was the Bloody Roar commercial. Another thing that makes the scream therapy angle weird is out of all of the various fighting game franchises, Bloody Roar is one of the least "shouty" fighters imo. At least in comparison to games where characters typically shout move names, have the most bombastic announcer yelling "C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER", or die screaming during fatalities. Honestly thought it was going to be an MK commercial up until the werewolf bit. Awesome co-hosts as always.

I would guess the reason Pikachu doesn't do as much is because of it's difficult to move in that costume.

I can totally see that as a mobile game. Using that paper style with 2D sprites of KOF games from 94 to XIII If SNK is clever, they can also put the characters from World Heroes and other IPs they owned

Number 9 is not weird. It's Cannes Golden Lion worth material. It's kinda Oscar or Cannes Golden Palm Branch but for commercials.c And I agree. Your improvents upgrade this ad. P.S. Of course Smash ad deserve it too.

Eh, it's okay. Since we have access to so many fighting games from that era, nothing about EC feels unique that I can't get from other classic fighters.

how did you get she get from a mortal kombat commercial a trope that old people are scared of other/evolving cultures? it’s an old street fighter 2 commercial with no tropes or politics, just an old guard getting spooked by you know…A GROTESQUE MONSTER hand coming out of a game box also slight racism if you think the monster hand represents other/evolving cultures bruh:/

I didn't think that was the case either, but she was referring to how a lot of 90s ads for kids and teens had the trope of "this isn't for old people," like the Simpsons joke "I used to be with 'it', but then they changed what 'it' was. Now what I'm with isn't 'it' anymore and what's 'it' seems weird and scary." I just saw it the same way you did. Even though I just viewed it as a horror movie cliche, too, it was interesting how my cohost got another vibe from it, and I don't really like to cut commentary from my cohosts unless it's redundant, so I kept it in there for the sake of showing different perspectives we interpreted from the ad. The evolving cultures line was about the rise of gaming culture in the 90s and the trope that older folks didn't understand new technology. She did not mean for it to be related to other culture in any other way and we did not intend for that to be the interpretation.
