I've been a fan of Yoshi ever since Super Mario World. But what do I think about his series of games? And which Yoshi game is my favorite? Let's find out!

What I appreciate about Crafted World is that it introduces alot of new ideas into the franchise while still feeling like a Yoshi game. It does stuff like: -foreground and background elements - choosing your own path in the 2nd world map - using coins as currency - score-based levels - flipside levels (or speedrun level as I like to call them) - cute cutscenes before the bosses (Past yoshi games just had Kamek say 2 or 3 sentences and that's it) Also, out of all the Yoshi games, i think this one has the most creative level themes in the franchise. It has stuff like: - an urban area where you find train parts - a desert where you run from a skeleton dinosaur - A ninja house - A town where clown dolls try to murder you with an axe - Avoiding the security system in a museum - Going on a safari hunt - A space shuttle where tiny robots freak out every time a meteorite hits the level -An acorn forest where you put owl dolls back into their nest -etc. I kinda hope some of the new ideas I mentioned in the beginning are used again and improved upon in future games (coin currency, scored-based levels, cutscenes, etc).
@TheYoshiFanatic3 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree with that! I actually have been working on a video that talks about that, and compares it to another recent game in the Yoshi franchise. I really appreciate some of the changes Crafted World brought to the table.
@wiiu-theunderratedconsole75692 жыл бұрын
What I disliked in Crafted World: - The soundtrack was awfully bad - The auto-swallowing of enemies - The multiplayer was really inconvenient - The collectibles weren’t as creative or as fun to collect a Woolly World’s ones - The amiibo support was disappointing - The new egg-throwing mechanic felt less intuitive and slower than how it has been in past entries - The constant replaying of levels for souvenirs - The general easiness of the game that the costume system doesn’t help - Yoshi’s new animations felt a little clunky and weird - The fact that the first trailer showed changing between background and foreground as part of your moveset in the game but that it wasn’t true at all!

Honestly, my biggest problem with Yoshi's New Island is it retconning the ending of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. I would've settled for "Mr. and Mrs. Mario are out for a walk with their kids, when suddenly - Uh oh! - Kamek! He snatches Mario and Luigi and takes them to Bowser's Secret Resort on Egg Island!" than "Oopsies, looks like they aren't Mario's parents! Hope you weren't feeling all emotional during the ending of that game, sucker!" I actually don't mind the kazoo soundtrack, but that's probably because I see it as a "so bad it's good" thing. (with the way people kept complaining about it, I was expecting the soundtrack to be like 75% kazoos) XP Also, nice to see another person try to keep Yoshi alive in Super Mario World! I always attempt that myself. There's only one level where I'm kind of forced to abandon Yoshi - Vanilla Dome 2 - but there might be a way to get him through that section that I haven't found.
@TheYoshiFanatic2 жыл бұрын
That's an excellent point! I've been thinking about the Yoshi and Mario canon lately, so that's definitely something that bothers me too. I like the change in story that you proposed! Also, Vanilla Dome 2, if I recall, is a water level with a tall vine near the beginning, and I haven't found a way to keep Yoshi at that part yet either. You're in good company!

Sounds like quite the undertaking! And the challenge of the game is part of what I love about it. To me, it feels like the perfect balance between challenge and accessibility to new players. I do agree that the levels are long, especially compared to the Mario games. That's pretty much standard for Yoshi games though. Haha

Thank you! As I said in the video, Yoshi's Story was my first Yoshi game, so I have a lot of nostalgia and just general fondness for it. I also think it's better than most people say it is. Yeah, it's not difficult to blast through, but if you go for all 30 melons in each stage, you're in for quite a challenge. I got here when searching for anybody possibly discussing the topic of "What would a new Yoshi game need to dethrone Yoshi's Island?". Perhaps a video idea? To me, "Yoshi's Island" had just a wonderful mix of so many things. The level design was clever and varied, the music had lots of charm, the bosses also were different and imposing in their appearance and gimmick, plus you got lots of value in terms of replayability and completionist goals. This can be continued with the fun implementations of Yoshi transformations, the amusing little minigames as well as a surprisingly emotional story and atmosphere in my opinion. I at least felt like the original Yoshi's Island had something rather magical about it, that starts with the toy music box underlined intro scene towards the way the game presents the Yoshis as that bright and friendly folks that embark on a great quest to help baby Mario and his brother Luigi. Not to forget Kamek as a villain felt snarky and well, villainous and each time after Yoshi trampled one of the fortresses it felt like some impressive win. Lastly, the ending is single-handedly one of the most epic moments that pretty much compares to what some Kirby games tend to develop in their final sections to. What I try to say is, I really have fond memories of the game because so many things clicked and reaching the ending for me usually felt wholesome, as the Yoshis not only get to save a baby and a stork but everything comes to a close in such a satisfying way with the lovely ending credits. And that's why to me at least none of the later Yoshi games ever could compare in the slightest. They were fun and had their own quirky ideas but they usually felt so...uninspired...I don't know if that's the right way to phrase it. Will leave with a subscription and keep my fingers crossed for a bunch of fun Yoshi content. Would be neat to see some extra comparisons of levels, transformations, bosses and whatnot.
@TheYoshiFanatic2 жыл бұрын
I think you make a good point: Yoshi's Island is the amalgamation of so many great components that come together to make a masterpiece. It would definitely be tough to dethrone that game, but I don't think it's impossible. That's a great video idea! I'll add it to the list :) FYI, if you haven't seen it already, I have another video that details what I think a 3D Yoshi game would be like. Obviously, it wouldn't tick all of the boxes for the video you're looking for, but I think you would find it interesting at the very least, and there's some things I mention in the video that could definitely go into a "Yoshi's Island dethroning" game.
@MarcMarioMaster2 жыл бұрын
@@TheYoshiFanatic Amusingly enough, when "Super Mario 3D World" came out, my initial thought was that working likely well for other characters and since Kirby's new game basically is that, it could work rather well for a Yoshi game, too.The neat thing with "Kirby and the Forgotten Land" so far is that HAL Laboratories tries again to implement a few extra components to the game like giving the option to upgrade Kirby's abilities, unlocking minigames in the Waddle Dee village and the general presentation is rather pretty with the various new enemy and boss designs as well as the aesthetic of the wild and overgrown levels. Perhaps Yoshi needs a new type of adventure with a different motivation or Yoshi could go into a direction akin to both Mario and Kirby and basically aquire abilities through differnt methods like special fruits or switching out with one of his differently colored brethren. There are both the possibility of trying to implement the old and build from there or to play withh different other games' concepts. A 3D collectathon like DK64, a TLoZ-esque action adventure with focus on story, or perhaps giving Yoshi's moveset some sort of overhaul and making it more fastpaced (like an Ori or Hollow Knight (unsure if that would sit well with the casual Yoshi fan though.
@TheYoshiFanatic2 жыл бұрын
I could definitely see Mario 3D World being a decent basis for the level design of a 3D Yoshi game, and overall level progression and overworld design (having mini-games and/or challenges to make the overworld a little more interesting). I think for at least the first 3D Yoshi game, it should stick pretty close to Yoshi's Island's system of a certain amount of levels per world, adding an explorable overworld to the mix for some gameplay variety. I especially like how the gameplay is split between the main levels and the overworld in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Layer, though I don't think a 3D Yoshi game needs to take it as far as that game did. I do like the idea of giving Yoshi's moveset a bit of an overhaul like you mentioned. Super Mario Odyssey gives him a wall-jump which could probably be expanded into a few different moves. Also, anytime Ori or Hollow Knight are brought up, I get excited and want to play those games again. Haha
@MarcMarioMaster2 жыл бұрын
@@TheYoshiFanatic Yoshi's tongue in particular sure seems like something that can be quite useful for platforming. If you recall "Super Mario Galaxy 2", it got both used as a grapple to swing around with aside from the usual catching mechanic to get rid of foes. Would be something different if Yoshi suddenly starts to hurl things around with his tongue strength perhaps( even if it might only be a temporary or optional type of move).

I agree with that, for sure. I think Crafted World had a lot of good things going for it, but also had a lot of flaws. I'll be going further into that in my next video :) More OG Yoshi's Island would be awesome, but at the same time I think it's good that Nintendo tries to innovate with the series at least a little bit. Yoshi's Woolly World was probably my favorite example where they stayed true to what made Yoshi's Island awesome, but added new mechanics and made some changes. And I have little faith that a "Yoshi's Island 2" would be as good as the first one, seeing Nintendo's track record with Yoshi's New Island. I would definitely recommend Yoshi's Crafted World despite its many flaws. It adds a lot to the Yoshi gameplay formula, and some of those things are great additions that I think are worth experiencing. I actually have a video that goes more in-depth about that game, comparing it to Yoshi's Woolly World, so feel free to check that out if you want to know more about that game! By the way, if you do decide to pick up Yoshi's Crafted World, right now is a great time to do it. I believe it's on sale for $40 at Walmart :)

I don't understand why Yoshis Island is not available on 3DS Virtual Console
@TheYoshiFanatic2 жыл бұрын
I think it might be because of some of the Super FX chip visual effects? Specifically the level "Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy", where the backgrounds and colors warp a bunch. Though for what it's worth, 3DS ambassadors got the GBA version. I wish that were more widely available on 3DS, along with the rest of the GBA games.

3DS can definitely handle 16-bit games
@TheYoshiFanatic2 жыл бұрын
I mean, you're right, the New 3DS officially supports SNES games via Virtual Console, although the original 3DS doesn't. And through homebrew, you can emulate SNES games on both, though again, the original doesn't perform very well. But some games are more demanding than others, and that includes Yoshi's Island. I've read that games like Yoshi's Island, Star Fox and Stunt Race FX, all of which use the Super FX chip (or Super FX 2 chip? Not sure which) could work with Nintendo's emulators, but it takes more work to get them to function correctly. That's why we didn't see those games on Wii, Wii U or 3DS Virtual Console, but we do see them on the SNES Mini and the NSO SNES app. I guess Nintendo finally decided to put in that effort, but didn't feel that it was worth it to put in the effort for Virtual Console?

SMW2 Yoshis island is so ugly I just can't bring myself to play it. Yoshis wooly world is genuinely beautiful. Love playing it with my wife and can't wait for my daughter to get older so she can play it as well.

Yoshi's Woolly World really is beautiful, and great for playing with your family. My son loves both Woolly World and Crafted World. Bit of a hot take on Yoshi's Island being ugly though. You're entitled to your opinion of course, but I'm curious, what makes you think it's ugly?

@@TheYoshiFanatic Looking forward to playing Crafted World. Looks good but I prefer Wooly World. The reason I think Yoshi's Islan is ugly is the dark colors like the over use of black and the general art style I dont like. I can like it more if it didn't have so much black. The use of black is just too dark for the shadowing of the hills for example.

@@retroman-- Interesting. I guess the bold outlines would contribute in that case too. It never bothered me, but to each their own!

My ROM hack? Which game was that for? I'm always up for trying a good ROM hack :)

Just did some research and found the ROM hack Yoshi's Strange Quest by yoshifanatic on SMW Central. It looks really cool! Although I can't take any credit for it; that wasn't me. I guess there's other Yoshi fanatics that I didn't know about! Haha. Maybe I'll stream his ROM hack sometime :D

Yes, that was it! That would be cool if you played it

Yoshis crafted world looks good, but has so much annoying and lazy things in it to artificially extended the game’s length to make it seem longer. The “souvenir” **cough cough fetch quests** are completely unnecessary and if anything ruins the experience for me. I tried to 100% this game, and literally this game burnt me out within the first 10 hours to the point where I didn’t touch this game for probably 6 months. The game also makes you replay the same levels over and over and over again either for the souvenir hunt or the flipside. Like I get the whole flipside thing, it’s neat, but does it really have to be for every single level? All that makes you do is play the same level but oooo now it’s backwards, that totally makes it like a entirely new level right? Right? Right? NOO! My guess, they ran out of time and decided to make the player play through the same damn levels over and over to make the game feel longer. This game is a huge letdown from its previous game yoshi’s woolly world. I found more fun in the first hour of woolly world than the 15 hours I’ve played in crafted world.

Agreed. Yoshi's Crafted World is the quintessential mixed bag for me. There's a lot of fun additions and changes made to the Yoshi formula. But as you said, there's a lot of negatives too. It looks like you saw my video going more in-depth, so you probably already know my thoughts on the game. Haha. But Woolly World really was so much better!

Yeah, those box people and their fetch quests did get tiresome after a while. Crafted World is still enjoyable for me though.

bruh quit talking shit about yoshi's new island that game murdered me with nostalgia
@TheYoshiFanatic3 жыл бұрын
Nostalgia shouldn't be the selling factor for a game, at least in my mind. In any case, I thought the game was pretty good, just not as good as some of the others on the list.
