Lesson Notes:
In this lesson, I share my top tips for effective practice when you are learning your arpeggios (a.k.a chord tones) on the double bass. Knowing all of the most commonly used arpeggio types (major, minor, dominant 7th and half-diminished) in all 12 keys is essential for any bassist wanting to improvise bass lines or solos. If you are playing songs, jazz standards, or any music based on a chord progression you need to know the notes of the chords. This information will help you to make creative choices that your bandmates will love!
In this video, I share my top tips on making that process as quick and easy as possible. When you consider there are many different chord types which are all played in 12 keys it may seem like an overwhelming task. I outline several things that will help you to make the most of your practice time and cut down the learning curve!

Hey Geoff, really enjoying the course, thanks to the two octave shapes I’ve been bold enough to move down the neck a little when performing. Just one thing I’m not too sure I’ve been doing correctly is spelling the notes, when I sing them. So I’ve been sticking to flats from the key of F through to Gb for the circle of 5ths, travelling anti-clockwise thou, so really 4ths, for those keys and sharps for the non flat keys, minus F, so for A i would call it’s major third C# but for Gb I would call its 5th Db & not C#, Farley confident but not 100% so am still wondering if this is right? Thanks

Yes I think you are doing it correctly....A good way to think about it is that you never mix accidentals (sharps and flats).... So move up in 4ths starting on C...then F,Bb,Eb,Ab, here you should practice Db or C#..then Gb or F#, then B or Cb..then E,A,D,G which are all # keys..that will take you all the way round. Does that make sense? ....BTW Great job in your practice, this material is so useful.

Thanks Geoff, it does indeed, especially not mixing sharps & flats... as soon as I started appreciating instrumental music as a kid, i loved arpeggios but never really mastered them on an instrument, hopefully I’ll get there on the double bass... It’s empowering as you start to see them crop up when improvising or learning a new tune, almost like a good bassist, often in the background, subtly, humbly if you like holding the music together, but still able to come to the forefront as a soloist does, tastefully of course... I know when I start to enjoy practicing something then it’s probably going to stick, doesn’t happen too often, I’m glad it’s starting to with arpeggios & the double bass.

Hey Geoff, I'm a guitarist and have been playing for a little over 10 years. I found a double bass shop near my college where I'm renting while I save up money to buy a nicer bass. When I play the bass I can't help but to want to use the fingerings that are familiar to me. They don't feel very uncomfortable or strenuous on my hand because it's what I'm used to. But should I practice proper fingering techniques? Will I start running into problems if I don't have proper technique?

Hey Zack, I would recommend using normal double bass fingerings/technique as it will hold you back to use guitar or bass fingerings (in the lower register especially). Double bass has some really key differences and when I play bass guitar I use different technique/fingerings than I do for upright bass. Enjoy your new bass and great to hear you are getting into the upright bass! Cheers Geoff

Geoff keep up the great work 👍, I have get myself a bow to learn how to bow. What kind of bow should I start out with?? I really enjoyed this video and the other one slapping with a bow. I didn't know you could do it and do it without breaking a bow or damage it and it still be useful.

It's difficult to recommend a specific bow model. Here in the U.K there are very few places with enough bows to choose from and I bought mine from an old teacher. I would recommend doing a search on the talkbass.com double bass forums to see if you can find one for sale near you, or if there are any recommendations for new bows. There are a lot more options in the U.S with companies like Upton bass, Gollihur and Lemur Music who offer starter bows that should get you going. In terms of material, pernambuco is generally thought of as best, but carbon fibre can also work well. Both will need good quality hair which can be expensive. Good luck on your bow search. :-)
