I have a total of eight boxes around my house, most are occupied in the mating season, and I have a colony of sparrows living between the side wall and fascia board, around 10 pairs give or take. When the birds are gone, the world will be a quiet place first thing in the morning and evening. Give them somewhere to live.

I’ve been very fortunate to have blue tits nesting in the nest box I made for the past four years. For the past two years I have left a mixture of dried grass, twigs and moss on the edge of the lawn which the birds have taken advantage of and can recommend this to help them build their nest.

Be aware that if you are successful in providing nesting boxes and food, one result will be a lot more bird poo. In autumn 2019, we put up nesting boxes and bird feeders around our patio and we attracted a lot more birds to our garden (including pigeons) I now have to pressure wash my patio weekly! In the autumn, we will relocate our nesting boxes and bird feeders to a wild part of the garden where the poo won’t matter.

@@johnlewis9745I did too, several years ago. I bought large washers, with something like a 28mm central hole, and stuck the washers on the boxes. One eventually fell off, but the other one is still on and still preventing predators from getting in. When I bought the washers you couldn't buy specially made metal ones, but there's plenty about nowadays.

Its among scrap wood ie old pallets - I’m horrified a little bird is building a nest in there because the dangers are my cat, it’s north facing and the box isn’t secure and less than a meter off the ground. I’m hoping it abandons the box for its own safety but there it is daily flying in and out making a nest 😢 I’ve placed potted plants around it to hide it but I don’t know if this is the right thing to do

Any tips to prevent wood pigeons destroying my planted borders? I have two feeders in a 5 year old hawthorn tree which was trouble free until the local wood pigeons discovered the feeders and now upto seven at a time come during the mornings and have broken my ferns and climbed in several bushes which has broken them or stunted their growth. I used a tray on the feeders to stop the seed falling to the ground but the pigeons discovered how to perch on the trays or feeder perches to steal the seed whilst flapping about attempting to gain balance. I’ve changed the feeders, moved the feeders to no avail. My artificial lawn laid last year is along with my flower borders being ruined by these nuisance pigeons to such an extent I am seriously considering stopping feeding the birds altogether. I am at my wits end as I enjoy feeding the wild birds but it cannot be at the detriment of my garden and daily clean up of pigeon muck and damaged plants due to these pigeons bickering over fallen seed! Any suggestions other than shooting them is greatly appreciated!

If you want birds that like open nests, there's only so much you can do. Because a lot of the things you can do to scare or deter them will do the same to robins. The only real suggestion I could give is doing your best to make the nest site inconspicuous as possible. Also, don't hang around the nest while magpies(or any Corvids) are around and watching. They're intelligent, and will know something is up if they see you go to a spot repeatedly.
