My first bird of prey was a Barn Owl, I named it Yogi. My second bird was a Borrowing Owl named Rosco. I thought it was a male, but two years latter, he laid three eggs. Opps! 😁

Thank you for this video! It was very helpful and informative! I want to someday foster owls and help with wildlife education in my state, so this video was a huge help! It will be years before I'm able to get my own place and foster an owl though, but I plan on doing as much research as I can before building an aviary and applying for license (I'm from the US, and here in the few states it's legal to keep an owl you need a license for fostering birds of prey, owls are never pets here only fostered animals).

I went to a raptor camp when I was younger. 3 month program working with birds of prey at our local zoo and rehab facility. Gorgeous birds, so much respect. They're not good pets though... Not at all. Working birds is one thing, but not a pet. You want a pet bird there are so many beautiful fowl, parrots and poultry that make far better companions. If you love these birds on particular, ask your local zoo or rehabilitation program if you can volunteer. Most are happy to have another set of hands. You'll get plenty of hands on work.

Hi there, thanks for the informative video. I'm apprenticing with a falconer at the moment. They don't use paint in their aviaries. I was wondering what you use that is safe for them as I plan the design and build of my first aviary. Thank you!

Am looking at a barn owl and find what you say spot on for what I need to know - I've had (Charlie was 11 when he passed on) Harris hawk that I did everything with including going fishing and stuff The aviary looks similar and the feeding hatch idea is a good one - as there is only me and some rabbits I breed for food at home will a barn owl be "easy" to train - My on glove experience is minimal - cos I'd like to fly it properly and what you say is neither patronising or condescending its your hard earned experience talking Thank you very much for sharing this video

Hey man.. Thank you for all the information, great video. I have a few questions if you can help out.. I found a little spotted owl by the road with 2 crows attacking it.. I took it home, it's been one week now, she is loose in 2 rooms with a lot of branches set up in places, a big cat scratching tower house and tommorow she's getting (We're getting it in our house 😀) a big part of the tree that will help her for the next few weeks to feel comfy.. I feed her chicken meat and all sorts of liver/hearts for now (The cats can bring me a mouse or two later i guess) and my plan is to take care of her for about one month, when she'll be able to hunt for herselves, then let'er go free near my house (Build her a nesting spot on a big 25M Lime tree) and hope she finds apartner and has a normal Owl life. Is that to naive? She is supper comfetarble with me and my girlfriend during the day, she is pruning herself laying down when she falls asleep, she is steching her wings, and doesn't mind the touch (Looks like she needs it/enjoying it), loves to eat and poop, but at nightime she becomes another animal as you said.. She just wants to get out, she is supper stressed and depressed, she might hurt herself flying arrond.. She is sitting on the window ledge and just looks out with the sadness in her eyes. I have to wake up like 10 times a day, to help her and try to calm her down.. Yesterday i left the light on for half of the night to keep her calm, but she didnt like that in the morning.. Do you have any advice on, how could i return this Owl safely to the wild without leaving too much of a human impact? Will she be able to hunt her own food? The parrents are too far away from my home and i don't know what tree was she on.. Also didn't see any other owls in the area, was looking with the owl on my hand for 20min.. Only crows.. I also hear a lot of crows around my house, is that really a problem for an adoult Spotted owl (Maybe Barred owl)? She is supper gentle and i don't know how she would handle the Crows.. I could help her with the air rifle if i see her in trouble i guess.. Crows are smart, they'll know not to fuck with the owl after that, what do you think? 😀 Great video and much love from Slovenija.. 💚 Sorry for this barrage of questions, I/she need/s help 😅

because you are english many people over the world will watch this. I would definitely say that people have to check the laws. For example with your spotted eagle owl you said the roof is best fully closed. There are countrys where that is forbidden what makes keeping those birds that you have to shelter for the freezing weather difficult to hold. I like the way how you teach especially because i can find my way of thinking in it. Sadly here in my country again like i react on an other video the way we been teached here is the wrong way. For example if you cant fly your owl WITHOUT telemetry sell it to a better falconer. Who the hell uses Telemetry on an owl thats what the say back here. With an owl you only fly in your garden not in the field. So many things you said otherwise. Because of this reason i have to learn much on my own so watching this videos greatly help me out. I really like wath you try to tell us really like the easy to the point way you explain thing they are very clear.

A couple days ago I found a nestling on my property, I see the hole it fell out of, no sign of the parents for 2 days now. I can’t just let it die, so tonight I brought it inside and fed it some crickets and potato bugs I caught. Tomoro imma go get it some frozen pinky mice. It got its wing feathers but the rest is still fuzzy, it can’t fly yet. I gotta try, if it lives I’ll let it go in my barn and it can live there and eat all the mice.

How do i get in touch with you and your colleagues? I have very little experience with owls,but have worked with falcons alongside my grandfather. I rescued a little owl from a keeper that bought it on a whim. I have built an aviary for it but plan to keep it as a pet not a working bird. The owl was hand reared and is imprinted on me at this point. The questions I have are regarding the volume of food to give to the creature and is it wise to bring the creature indoors with me when i am home, so the bond and imprint stay strong. Thank you

What wood are your places made of where your birds sits at in the aviary? Like the way u build the aviaries is it possible to make the door at the front? And will the birds still jump in the mesh?
@TerraHistoria6
@TerraHistoria6 3 жыл бұрын
The frame work is treated cls timber, you can put a door on the front mesh but it does encourage them to fly towards the mesh/wire so needs more thought!

What type of owl telemetry would you recommend?
@TerraHistoria6
@TerraHistoria6 3 жыл бұрын
With most owls in general they’re not going to get lost a long way away whilst you’re flying them so any working telemetry should suffice but keep to a light small weight transmitter

Hi Dave, I have got an Indian Scoup Owl from a garden. I think his leg is broken and he is bleeding from there as well. and it's difficult to locate an emergency vet for Birds of Prey in my region in India. Can you please suggest some first aid? I am very worried about this little owlet.

Sorry to hear this, sadly I am not a vet and can’t offer much advise without seeing it. You need to stem the bleeding and keep the owl in a dark place to minimise stress but without veterinary care and knowledgeable rehab it’s chances are slim

Hey I’m wondering could I not keep a little owl inside because they are really small I can’t see it smelling if I kept it’s living area clean, how big a avairy/cage would a little owl need aswell? Also is it possible to fly a little owl outside? I promise I’m not irresponsible I’m going to research this fully and i would 100% buy everything it needs to have the best life like a tracker

Budgies are similar when it comes to how people are disgustingly calice are when it comes to the mentality of “I can just get another bird” & how their price is cheap but the housing & diet & toys & training & research (because parrot trainers like to write overpriced shitass books) & especially vet care all add up to quite the investment. Only get a parrot if you intend on practicing psittacusry (falconry but for parrots) aka truly raise a parrot.

Should never be made pets- these are majestic wild animals- being reduced to living in our houses and cages is disgusting. Good to hear it being discouraged, but it should simply be a no deal. So sad- become a wildlife rescuer if you really want them in your life!!
