Paternal grandad, Rumley oil pull, then JD D and later added two model H. I remember cutting channel iron that I was told was from the frame of the oil pull. My father sold the D and purchased a 444 and a 555 Massey Harris for PTO work as he custom filled many silos in the area, When the 4010 diesel came out he was done with the Massey's Maternal started with a Fordson, also had a model A car that he turned into a buck rake. He kept his horses for many years. Traded the Fordson for a JD B, said that damn Fordson was a dependable tractor but it reared up one to many times, also his had no spring under the seat said it just about broke his back. He later purchased a 70 and a 630. Traded them off one at a time for a 3010 and later a 3020

Not even 50 years ago there was dealers for 5 different brands within 8 miles of us, all gone now due to brand mergers and brand disappearance, plus Mother Deere's idiotic merger push. I miss the days of being able to talk to the OWNER not the flunky. Crap I'm getting old

@@dvdosterloh I get it. But 100 years ago dealers were still scarce. If you were near a Deere dealer you’d probably run a Deere. Like you say, even though these machines can be shipped, it’s kinda that way now again.

Without hesitation, I’d buy the Farmall. I like Deere too, but Farmall invented this category.

My grandpa had a Fordson. He later replaced it with an Allis Chalmers WC. I think in both cases price was a big factor. In the case of the Ford he farmed in southeast Michigan where Ford was a big name.

I'd have to say of the offerings in 1924 I personally have to go with the Mccormick Deering 15-30. 3 forward speeds was a big 4 cylinder designed to run of kerosene. I have a 1928 example that runs excellent.

My grandfather bought his first tractor in 1946, a 1938 or 39 BF Avery, also sold through Montgomery Wards as a Twin Row. Built by the Cletrac Co. 2 row mounted cultivator, mounted 16” single plow or 2 - 12” plow. Had this tractor until 2005.

I'm a deere guy, but looking back, I'd take the farmall if I could swing the cost in 1924. Though being in Kansas, not much rowcrop would take place then, so the deere D would be a more "practical" fit. Back in the day, there was more D's in our area than anything else.

Fordson was the innovator. It really drove the price down, proved a lightweight tractor could be successful and the total number produced tells the story.
@316jd140
@316jd140 4 ай бұрын
The Fordson brought power farming to the small acreage farmer as most of the tractors produced when the Fordson came out were big, prairie type tractors. And in 1924, the Fordson was probably the most sold tractor at that time. It wasn't until that the Farmall became more popular that the Fordson's shortcomings became more apparent. But it was still cheaper than most on the market, therefore it was a good option for the small time farmer.

If you do tractors from 60-70 years ago the grey ferguson tractor is at the top because without it we wouldn’t have the 3 point linkage we have today

At this time in history we didn't even have any tractor manufacturers the first tractors being used here were imported and you would maybe have a Lanz Bulldog if you could afford it in 1921 most couldn't afford it so stayed a little longer with horses.

Can you do some videos on the horse drawn equipment im in the middle of trying to save up for machine tools so I can start a horse drawn equipment shop in my area for the Amish, myself and my friends in the horse shows i want to restore and remanufacture some stuff, it was really funny seeing my friends gawking at a video of a new idea easy way hay loader during the fuel and parts shortages of cov*d that was forcing some of their farms to cease to exist, I was the only one in my group that knew anything about those machines and so many questions were asked

@LocustMotorWorks thanks, I shure hope it goes somewhere , here's a clip of the book" the horse drawn mower book restoration and operation of miccormick #9 mowers" by Lynn r miller to give you a lead on where to start finding information since it's very hard to find, The horse-drawn sicklebar mower has only been in popular use since shortly after the US Civil War (1860s) earliest crude production models started to appear around 1845. Many refinements were made to the basic style of the "push-pull" frame came into being at the end of the. 20th century. The late model enclosed gear units began to appear in the 1920s "International" still made the HD mowers until after the end of World War 2. They would have continued long after that were it not for government programs to force the draft animals off the farms and replace them with the new tractors, a move seen to absorb the economic displacement which follows the dramatic end of war time economy. This was a period and rational, which gave us high powered chemical herbicides and pesticides as well. War it would seem continues to destroy long after it concludes the enclosed gear late model John deere case oliver David Bradley, and McCormick deering international mowers. I, (we) are so fond of had a Zenith, a popular manufacturer, and use that lasted just short of 25 years millions of farmers with millions of mowers built to have a serviceable life of a 100 plus years, all pushed into fence rows. I say it was far too short of a period I say we ought to still be using them and benefiting from their efficiency and practicality.
