You spot on about the energy of this video being off, and I think that what's not right is that not one of the prankees smiled or laughed or was cool with when it was revealed to be a video. Usually we see the guy being ok with it but not this time. I also think that instead of saying "it's a video" it's essential to say "it's a prank video", just to diffuse tension. This was a bit heavy to watch.
