I've ordered this unit for $140 CAD for my stereo hifi stack specifically to plug my phone into using a USB C to USB B cable as I do NOT trust the DAC's that hang from your phone like a dongle. Excited to see what kind of quality boost I get over just using AUX from my phone into my tube preamp. Thanks for this review it came in very handy researching this DAC and now I know it is possible to have this DAC in "DAC only mode" as I have zero need for any amplification done from this unit. Very professional video!

In DAC mode, I only see the number "96" on the display... Regardless of which files I play 44.1 - 192 or even large DTS (.ds) files. What could be the reason?

Like and subbed, just a quick question please, if i connect this DAC to my windows laptop via usb will the remote work for volume control?, some confusing feedback on amazon reviews regarding this. thanks mate, james.

Yes, the volume can be controlled with the remote in preamp mode. BUT if it's in full DAC mode (fixed-level volume out), then it will stay at 100%.

Forgive me but I'm not really following. Does "preamp mode" still use the dac chip? I plan to use this with a fosi za3 amp and source pc via USB and tv via optical. Will I still be able to remote control volume in optical?

Yes, it uses the DAC chip and yes, you can control volume with optical out.

Can you hook one of these to a regular home stereo? I bought one and i can’t seam to get it working. I’m running an ipad as my player and i’m trying to go into a Marantz Se-4023. I’ve tried everything just can’t get it working. if you could take time out of your day i would much appreciate it.

You need a Lightning to USB B cable/adapter. I'm not sure if they even exist but I'd be surprised if it couldn't be done. It would have been easier with the Topping MX3s which has a USB-C input.

I like the SMSL SU-9 Ultra/Topping E70V + Topping L70 combo or the SMSL DO300EX. Both have single-ended and balanced which is convenient for all the different headphones and iems I cycle through.

@@PrimeAudioReviews ah, the SMSL SU-9 Ultra sounds appealing to me, because you said that it has a black background. can i ask how it compares to the E70V and SMSL DO300EX?

@radiofreealbemuth it's a standalone DAC. It has better components and audio quality. But it's a DAC only with no headphones amp.

The DO300EX is a dac amp combo, and yet somehow it's still cheaper, even though it shares the same dac chip setup as the SU9 Ultra 😳 I'm guessing the Ultra is more expensive because you get that mythical black background. I've never tried a dac amp with a black background with my iems, so the concept sounds very enticing to me
