Clay. I have a question that I feel would really help a lot. How come impact position really isn’t taught first. Like first lesson I’d give if I were good enough to do so would be ask them to get into an impact position. If they weren’t in it correctly I’d show them. How to get into it and have them do it. Then I’d have them keep hands on the club straight back into a setup position. And then have them go from address just to impact no backswing. It’s kind of a feel thing for me. Feel like it would teach weight shift without even knowing it. Then I would teach them impact to a half finish position. Then I would incorporate your ladder drill. Start at last parallel to half finish. 10 20 yard shots to just get the feeling and build it up

Hi Clay thanks for the video :) One of Jack’s favorite drills / sayings was try to keep your back to the target as long as possible in the downswing, similar to the Justin Rose pre shot routine. In your explanation you are saying try get your chest open to promote forward shaft lean. Which one is right? Or how do you explain what you’re saying inline with Jack’s drill and Justin Rose’s swing thought? Thanks
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dustin, keep in mind that feelings are relative. Jack also said that he tried to release the club as soon as possible. That feeling is not going to work for most golfers. He likely felt that so he could get his lower body working first in the downswing. This will allow you to rotate and get your chest open at impact otherwise you may just throw your upper body, square the chest at impact and release the club early.

You make great videos. I am curious at 2:05 We all teach the same basic things: When the head trails you have control of the face through impact as the hands cant turn over and cause micro adjustments. Well not all of us, but thats a different conversation, as most people I try to explain press/forward shaft lean to, say they have never heard it, which boggles me. But as for my question... Clearing the hips, both in back swing and down swing is absolutely necessary, but on the down swing, I have yet to find a good way to explain to someone, in a lesson, how to clear and let it pull the hands. Do you think the 'squatting down' that Rory, Rahm and countless others are now talking about, is in essence them doing that? This sounds dumb, but when you sit, your hips square to your knees (when actually sitting/squatting). This puts them back to neutral. Then they can pull the hips open to target. I am asking because I have yet to embrace the squat, as for me, and anyone that I have seen try, while it promotes patience starts down swing without shoulder rotation) it causes my levels to all bounce, causing havoc. As golf changes, and new techniques come in, most are ridiculed, (Paven loop, Dustin bow/cup, Snead trap) until all the sudden people realize the quirky nature can really improve consistency. I have only been able to really teach the hip open by telling people to 'knee forward and break a board with the back leg' (not focus on hips) as this is one of the main exercises I do when training for a long drive competition, and it gets my hips active. Great videos and thanks for making great content. -Mike

I'm a low single digit golfer, but I struggle with this move. I have it for the most part, although I can't seem to get the wrist downturn consistent. The ball tends to go right and left and of course this results in a double miss which is not good. Perhaps setting the wrist a bit more bowed at the top for more consistency?

What works for me is starting with the club head about 2 feet from impact, with my hips clear and my clubhead square, and just repeating for about 10 balls the final contact, then backing the club up halfway to horizontal, for a longer swing and firmer impact, then a dozen balls from horizontal, etc. to get use to the timing. With a half swing I am hitting the ball more consistently and with more distance than I did with my old swing, if you could call it that:-)

Hmmm with COVID19 running wild ive had a bit of time to really focus on key points in my downswing..what its done is add distance and each club feels and sounds different. Tried this on each club except driver. I have a strong swing but not hard . But in last 6 months swing is radically changed. 9iron went from 115 to 150. 7iron went 150 to 185yards. 3w went from 200 to 275 yards. Not bad for a 44yr old

What if instead of turning the club head down to square the face you started with the club face closed at address (shaft vertical no forward lean). Then when you get to impact with forward lean the club face would be square?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Strengthening the grip can minimize the needed amount of bowing of the lead wrist, but you still need forward shaft lean through impact. It's likely if you don't bow the lead wrist and work on the shaft lean first, you'll be doing the same thing through impact with a vertical shaft and closed face. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor

Clay, I've been working on the move but am confused on the timing. I know in the tennis racket drill we turn the club at the top but at the impact drill you were turning it opposite the right thigh. Could you explain how the movement of the turning grip really occurs.
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Charlie, it can happen at any point in the swing as long as it's in the right position at impact. Take Dustion Johnson for example, he does it in the backswing and holds it into impact. Brooks Koepka does it a little bit in the backswing then more in the beginning of the downswing. Most players are going to be flat with the lead wrist at the top and then do this in the transition. Do it in whatever way allows you to get it at impact which is the only place that it matters. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

@@TopSpeedGolf Thanks Q for the speedy reply(don't you guys ever rest?). My only counter to your point is that it seems most advantageous to do it at the top because that would also promote shallowing. I know impact is #1 concern but shallowing must be a close #2

Hey, Noticed that in the slow motion replay of your first example strike that the divot is already there. But in the full motion view there is no divot in front of the ball. Get it that you're making a point to teach, but you're showing a clip that's different than what you hit. So obviously, the slow motion clip is from a different strike. I just want to be able to believe the information being taught. It does seem like a good concept and I'll chalk this up to just incorrect clip editing than anything else.
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Timothy, we have to shoot the slow-motion swings separately because the camera has to be in a different mode. We could show the actual swing but it would be more difficult to see because it's not capturing as many frames per second. Go look at basically every Tour players swing on KZfaq. They all have forward shaft lean at impact. Also keep in mind that you're exaggerating things in the drill. This helps to accelerate your learning and progress. If you just get into the exact positions that you want to be in then it's not different enough. It's too close to what you're already comfortable with and you'll find it difficult to change. I hope that helps. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Hey kid ... i want to take this opportunity to correct a WAY TOO LONG misconception in golf lessons OR talks about "hands in front of ur the ball" .... cause ACTUALLY when u swing correctly with ur hips and body open it gets ur hands BEHIND u ... !!! People are really trying to turn their hips quickly (correct) AND making sure hands are in front of it (totally wrong) ...u move ur hips ... weight and everything a bit forward that actually keeps ur hands and even arms BEHIND u while the shaft keeps up with ur hip turn (in front of ur hands and arms) yet both of those are of course behind ur turn. It's time to really teach it visually ... while ur hips are turned about 35-45 degrees OPEN at impact ur arms are probably around 25-35 degrees BEHIND at ur chest level u had at setup. Luv ya Clay .... and yeah ... SHALLOWING happens cause u turn ur hips quickly .... to tell people to MAKE IT HAPPEN with a hand move is WRONG ... there is a natural movement in it = get ur body out of the way = shallow happens ... body slow/hands quick = steep happens!!! Take care everyone .... golf is "easy" ... we're just complicating it... !!!
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gunnar, you are exactly right on most of your statement and we have many videos on the channel that talk about exactly what you said (the club is behind you). While opening the hips does help shallow the club, it's not going to automatically shallow the club. You can easily open the hips and come down steep. In fact, that is what a lot of people do. So, there does need to be some arm manipulation there if someone isn't doing it naturally when the hips open up. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
