It would be interesting to see top water baits with the camera under water looking up like the fish do. Perhaps in different water clarity

A chrome/black whopper plopper has been the ticket for me in my local pond. 5-6 ft visibility. Another lake I fish they tear up a top water frog with a white belly.

Sometimes you just have to try whatever is in your arsenal, that's why we have multiple poles with different lures tied on, so that way you can see what they are hitting for that day 👌

I live about 30min from Hartwell. There is a correlation between the chrome and blue backs as well. Chrome lipless work well on hartwell too

Perch color hardbaits work great for me, but I have to try some more bluegill patterns to see how they compare.

In my understanding chartreuse is bright white to bass. Bone and white are just off white. Bass are color blind to blue and it affects perception of other colors. On the other side, there is currently a huge cicada hatch going on on central GA but none at all in north GA mountains at this time.

This is absolutely true Bass do not see blue. They see Red white black green pink Merthiolate Chartreuse is bright white under water to a fish

@@clydesharman2053 bass see blue, but essentially as the same shade with varying degrees of brightness. Their cone receptors, while sensitive to greens and reds specifically, offer a more comprehensive spectrum that you’re implying. Lure selection behavior in clear water testing facility/lab setting and the biology of their (essentially) dichromatic vision are entirely different.

On lake Altoona in GA over the summer I fished a chrome popping stick bait like the one you have very fast to draw spotted bass up for a top bite they attacked it like a dolphin swimming behind a ship it was eye opening

I don’t know about downward, but I was throwing a chrome crank bait and even at 10-15 foot I could see that thing flashing. The water was dirty with about 5-7 foot view. But that flash was cutting right through it. I caught 12 bass on the bait that day.

I worked for Berkley 25 years ago with tank test. Top water test didn't make a difference in that lab. Tank test with less than 10' got the color response as all other lures. In the real world, all dark colors appear the same. Light colors look smaller because of light refraction. A translucent bait disappears. They are biting the motion like it's a small water bug. Clear water/Clear bait. Black provides a larger profile. Bigger fish in the population....use black. Chrome is for sub surface lures.

I'm from cook county illinois, funny you mentioned cicadas. I was just telling my co worker I'm waiting for the cicadas to come out, I was like free bait 😂😂😂

I believe, that if its sunny, the "shadow" cast by the lure onto the bottom or surrounding cover may be more convincing to a bass to eat it than color at least on sunny days.

My Dad's favorite top water color was a silver Flash Dalton Special. I saw many fish caught on that 1.

I keep it simple Bone/white Clear Black Like you said. Black sometimes just works. I won my first tournament on a black spook. I was catching them for two months on bone but they were just missing it one day. I threw black and started catching better than average fish and they where choking it. Mid day high sun. I thing it almost acts like a clear in a way

I believe chrome loses its flash as it gets deeper - even if the water is clear. Light diffuses in water and "spreads out" so it isn't "flashy" like you would see above the water. Once the flash disappears, the lure kinda disappears under the water. I stand to be corrected though.

The chrome Strike King Sexy Dawg Jr. has a white belly. I've caught a bunch of fish on it, though. Funny how lure makers put details on some lures that the fish will never see. Designed to catch fishermen, I suppose.

Long ago when I used to scuba dive in fresh water lakes and gulf of mexico, when I was down deep say 10 foot and looking back upwards toward the dive boat, all I could see was black and white contrast, of swimmers above, the boat hull and anchor rope. I could see no colors. If the water surface was flat with no wind ripples or waves, you could see some blue sky. But, when you dive into the crystal clear waters of the central Florida springs, caves and aquifers, all of the colors of fish and vegetation are vibrant when looking downwards towards the bottom. Simple panfish and largemouth bass are absolutely brilliant in color. I highly recommend to anyone when visiting Florida to at least snorkel in one clear freshwater spring once.

I don’t know if this is true about chrome but I’ve heard it can reflect its surroundings kinda like a mirror to really look realistic to its surroundings, don’t know if it’s true but I can see how it would work

regarding colors, the nuance doesn’t matter Bass will eat anything if they can feel it and see it. So color really only matters as it relates to light And whether it looks natural.

Yeah here in southeastern Ohio, we're getting the gdam cicada Tsunami later on this summer, which sucks, but at the same time, I can foresee Bass getting fatty, fat FAT gorging on these bugs.

KINDA LIKE FLASH BOOST FROM Shimano in there jerkbaits…Matt from Tactical Bassin Swears by that Flash Boost I think his Pb Smallmouth was on a jerkbait that was sitting by the boat and he believes that flash boost is what caught that fish

Translucent baits imo are only for gen clear waters never had success with them anywhere else. 30 years of topwater fishing I've found you only need three colors, bone/pearl white, black and something bright orange/chartreuse (bluegill style pattern) or a bone with a orange belly works well. Many of the times bass get hooked odd on topwaters isn't because they won't eat it/ or color choices though it's because bass swip at their prey to stun it and then turn back and eat it. But with all those hooks they get hooked during the initial swip😂.

For a buzzbait I'm going black all the time except during shad spawns. That's many years of fishing every color imaginable, fishing a buzzbait 3/4 of the year every trip out fishing lol.

What is the deal with all of these crazy a$$ colorway's on some lures? I'm not a professional angler by any means, but I only fish 4 colors of top waters. A White / White Chartreuse / Black / Green Pumpkin, and that's it, but most of the lakes I fish in are brown and stained. The ONLY Lake I fish that is relatively clear and has a nice Bass population is Seneca Lake, in Senecaville, Ohio, but you can't really bank fish there. There are very few spots I know of, but it's basically a lake you NEED a boat to be able to take advantage of the clearer water, and my gosh it sucks not having a boat.

I was wondering if bass eat grasshoppers, do you know of any bass hitting grasshopper type bait? Every year we get flooded with thousand of the disgusting things, you take a few steps along the bank and they go crazy flying everywhere.

Bass will absolutely eat grasshoppers. As a child (I didn't have money for tackle), I’d catch them all day with grasshoppers, worms, and a bobber.
