I love how literally nobody in this show is black or white. No one side or character has a moral compass that points due north. Toranaga is willing to commit atrocities to win, like everyone else. Yabushige is self-interested, though he is still brave and has honor and remorse. Honestly i think by most standards Yabushige is among the most sane characters. You cant trust him with detailed plans because he may well betray you, but at the same time, with what he knew about Toranaga likely being dead, why die with him and the losing side? He's among the most pragmatic and relatable characters. You rarely see a traitorous "rat" who is this layered and deep, this human-feeling rather than just a totally evil asshole with no redeeming qualities

It's customary to ask your best friend, or someone you trust to perform kaishaku (merciful decapitation) when you perform seppuku. It really hit hard seeing Yabu's guilt so profoundly expressed - as a samurai, committing ritual suicide is considered an honorable form of self-execution, compared to being killed by an enemy. Yet Yabu was so guilt-ridden at Mariko's death, that he preferred a dishonorable death. Being killed by cannon-barrage or eaten by a school of fishes was a disrespectful death, but Yabu preferred it out of his guilt.

I think Yabushige resembles in all of us as dealing both sides of the coin in decisioning things. Curious to both sides could also take you as an advantage by your Superiors. And the end game of it is you will take the fall for it eventually for knowledge. For when the good book(Bible) says, "You cannot serve 2 masters." This scene was almost funny in the book; Yabu denied it, said his accusers were lying and there was no proof. The following is a direct quote from the book: "There's no proof, Yabu-sama," Toranaga said. "I agree completely. There's no proof at all." "Yabu-sama, did you do these things?" Hiro-matsu asked. "Of course not!" Toranaga said, "But I think you did, so all your lands are forfeit. Please slit your belly today. Before noon." Usually the whole "you have betrayed me / failed me / outlived your usefulness, minion, time to die!" routine is a petty move from the evil overlord, but Toranaga is so offhanded in being the absolute the boss of the situation that he makes it seem awesome.

I agree with the perspective that Yabushige represents most people in terms of their instinct to survive at all costs. However, for someone like that, it makes their demise inevitable. He was always trying to play the winning side but eventually it caught up to him. If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything as they say. Had he stayed loyal and true to Toranaga from the beginning it is possible he would have played a pivotal role to Toranaga in the long run. In the forest ambush scene where Toranaga tricked his way out of the castle to go to the harbor, Yabushige mentions for once he would like to know Toranaga's plan beforehand. This to me signals that Yabushige's character has always been questionable to the point where Toranaga could not fully trust him. So yes, most people are fickle and go based on survival instinct. But when you live your life by that rule, you die most of the time.

Yabushige is twisted, but he seems to be the only person who is aware that their world is crazy and BS. He wants to stay alive, but has studied death so much that he has preferred methods. He is traitorous, but is it not a normal instinct to not want to be a part of mass seppuku? He’s not under any of the illusions and ceremonies which Mariko loves so much. He’s just tired of the BS and when it came time to go, he had a chat and did it swiftly.

i love this show, but i feel like this ending was a bit rushed, which could have been due to a lot of reasons like budget limitations and the episode limit given to the showrunners by the studio. there's still so much to happen like toranaga becoming shogun, ishido dying in battle, and blackthorne wanting to leave japan many times but being denied, to the point that he basically just ended up marrying a japanese woman and settling in japan. and yes, i kinda was expecting an epic battle in this series finale. but that's just my opinion

Theatrically, definitely it was disappointing. I wanted to see at least one major battle, a modern reenactment of Sekigahara. There's a sardonic irony in having all of this build-up and intrigue just for the game to be over before it even started, though, and seeing how everyone fit into the larger picture in the end. In terms of the universe itself, a quick checkmate with minimal casualties and sacrifices is the best outcome for everyone.

A lot of people are commenting that this episode shows how Toranaga is now set up to win the final battle... but it doesn't, the writers made Toranaga look so pathetic and hopelessly outnumbered that just making a few comments to Yabu doesn't convince me that everything has changed. We never see his power base or any of his allies or any reason why other Lords would go against the regents All we've seen him do for 8 episodes is hide in the forest.
