The first tornado highlighted in this video is a deviant tornado tracking backwards. After tailing the parent supercell northeast for an hour,
It was surprising to see it's tornado tracking the opposite direction, southwest.
Tornadoes can be deceptive and unpredictable. They intensify, grow, morph and deviate any direction and at close range there is almost no time to react, adjust and escape when the unexpected occurs. I've witnessed tornadoes turn hard right, bank left, do U-turns, suddenly accelerate and go in reverse.
Besides evading erratic twists, storm chasers have to anticipate
unforeseeable escape route entrapment.
Maps may give you confidence that a maintained road will carry you to safety, but they fail to inform when a stalled 100 coach train is blocking your retreat, or when the bridge is out. Maps don't show fallen trees, flooded roads, or eroded pot holes. Out here county roads often change from a sturdy gravel base to slippery mud impossible to drive on and often the maps are flat out wrong.
Other hazards storm chasers need to consider are hail, lightning, RFD's, downbursts, and inflow jets but many chasers agree the most dangerous aspect of chasing are the many hours of commuting.
TORNADO FATALITIES in USA last 25 years (1991 - 2015)
In the last 25 years, Kansas has had only 57 tornado related fatalities.
Texas has had only 93 deaths. Mississippi 112, Arkansas 121, Oklahoma 131, Tennessee has had 175 tornado related deaths, Missouri has had 243 and Alabama leads this stat with 380... Almost triple the tornado deaths of Oklahoma.

Some chasers scream through their videos. You create poetry. You create poetry with your words, and with your camera too. You always have the angle I want to see. Not to get the finest detail, but to capture the beauty and personality of each funnel. I love the artistry of your work, and it just so happens that the subject you work with also fascinates me.

*_I'm in northern Oklahoma & I know in an area with the wood's around you, these things can sneak up on ye. For my bunker, I used 3 small bunkers custom made for me with 2-meter concrete sewer pipes that are sealed remarkably well connecting each bunker. We have a nice pasture about 3-acres in size surrounded by 360-acres of woods so might not see the direction of a storm until it's on top of us. We built our home, barn, stables that are built in a way that the horses walk down into them like an underground car park. So when bad weather is coming they go down there without needing to be led most times. The roof of the stables is reinforced concrete which also serves as the ground under our barn. A cattle grid-type entrance keeps the rain out of the stables & re-directs it out into an old creek. We buried our "bunker" which crisscrosses the pasture & goes about 15 feet inside what was & is again the woods. We have 3 main entrances/exits which are hatches that open up to a steep-ish stairway into the bunker. One in our basement, one in our stables plus one that comes up into our cabin [also with the hatch type stairway - like your attic but going downstairs} just inside the treeline of the woods. The temp/Humidity gauge has not moved in 10 years so we have the inside sealed well with different temperatures in each room. We got a small cooking area, a bedroom, a room for expensive firearms {automatic & other weapons plus ammo surplus} a cold room for fresh food too. People are using these pipes as off-grid tiny homes which are great & they cost so little, especially. We have about 2 weeks of power stored in our batteries which are solar-powered & separate from the batteries for the house so when the power cuts happened recently, our batteries kicked in after 30 seconds & are powerful enough to use everything as normal. This setup means if we have a high likelihood of a storm, we can just go to bed down there & we have TV, internet, all we need to keep the kids from growing up in fear of bad weather. What an absolutely brilliant well thought out set up. Our power went out in our house in the UK watching the workmen working on the transformer while we sat with our head torches on 50 yards away. We heard our next door neighbour come out moaning his arse off at the workmen who were trying to "restore" the power, idiot... obviously couldn't watch his crap on TV. We just picked up a paperback book and read them with our head torches. 🙂🙂

That sounds amazing, I would absolutely love to have that much safety prep in my city home. Just a reinforced storm cellar and some solar panels with lots of long storage would be wonderful. After Harvey in ‘17, and the Freeze of ‘21, my in-laws bought us a gas-powered full-house generator, which eased my fears a little. But after Harvey, spending the night in our walk-in closet with my husband and two dogs, then walking five blocks through chest high water to my parents house through floodwaters, with our dogs in our arms and my medication and important documents in backpacks, I still feel trauma and fear. It’s not the death, it’s the destruction that scares me the most. The aftermath is awful. That’s why I want to leave next time a hurricane comes near, but my husband will refuse to from now on, with the generator. I’ve been afraid of tornadoes since I saw some news footage at the age of around 4. As a child I’d go into a blind panic when those three beeps and red scrawl would come over the tv; I went to a lot of therapy, and was even taken to meet with multiple local meteorologists who tried to calm my fears by arming me with knowledge. I don’t have panic attacks over bad weather anymore, but I do get very concerned and get out the supplies that have soothed me (even now with the generator) and take the dogs into my central walk-in-closet with a weather radio, lantern, blankets and pillows, and my iPad. When my husband actually joins me, I know I’m not being over cautious, but I don’t mind if I overdo it other times, because it’s what I need to do to feel some sense of control over something I really otherwise cannot control.

in deer collision with vehicles the injury to the persons in the vehicles is most commonly bc it went into the windshield and starting kicking and panicking. and they can end a life doing this. in very high deer populated areas this is common knowledge. it most likely was to put the animal to rest but people have also had to fight them to survive.

I can't recall the guy's name, but there was an extremely popular older gentleman who was a stormchaser (that I'd seen on KZfaq), who was killed on one of his chases. It was "after the fact", but no less heartbreaking for me to see his vehicle destroyed and the loss of life. Personally, I couldn't stop crying over it.

Tim Samaras fits that description-- Brantley Hargrove wrote an article for a newspaper in Texas about the El Reno tornado and in that article he reconstructed the circumstances that led to the deaths of Tim Samaras, his son Paul and a colleague. I think I'll stick with relatively tame thunderstorms in California and Arizona.

The gorgeous descriptions, the calm music during non-intense moments, and the moments of silence where you can hear the wind moaning and the rumbling of the thunder. I keep coming back to Hank's videos I watched already and I'm still blown away by them, no pun intended. I've been inspired to draw a scene with a tornado in the background thanks to this man with the intent to make it seem like a chill moment, lol

I've watched a lot of tornado footage but I've got to tell you that this gentleman is a true tornado guru! Smart as a whip, good with the camera and editing, he seems to have a knack for finding just the right shot. If I were chasing tornadoes, this is the fellow I'd want to be with. Even though this is 5 years old, the documentary and the close calls with these tornadoes is an excellent video with examples that could have cost you your life or to injure you horribly but luckily and thankfully your experienced and your careful and you got lucky at times. I've been in two tornadoes in my lifetime. One in Ohio, a little F1, in 1960's, and one in Indiana, an F3 that went west of Lafayette Indiana in 73. Back then we lived in a trailer, so we knew that we couldn't stay in there during a tornado. So here I was, home by myself right after school, and the local tornado sirens went off. So the only place I had to go was across a four strand barbed wire fence into the Purdue agro farm next door. a deep concrete culvert was over there, and I went there. With two wet miserable cats and a yappy little toy miniature Pomeranian. I tied them to the bottom of the metal ladder, and climbed up to watch that danged tornado go past us on the south side of the road to the south of us. It hit Monticello, a little town to our west, took out the court house, and killed 17 people that day. My family was originally from Missouri. About 65 miles North/North West of Joplin. We know not to mess with tornados. You couldn't pay me to be a chaser. I hear of a tornado going on I am getting as far underground as I can. Now I live in Florida. We get another kind of big weather event down here. I've been in 6 hurricanes already. Irma was the worst. Took our house roof. Imagine a F3 tornado that goes on for hours and hours. LOL. That's a Cat 3 or better hurricane.

Lol, I'm the opposite. I've seen three tornadoes, one funnel cloud, and two mesocyclones without tornadoes. That's why I'd love to be a storm chaser. Not for the thrill but to get scientific measurements that could save lives. Did I mention I don't even live in the US?

I've driven semis all over tornado country, but have never seen a live one. That's probably a good thing, although I've endured my share of apocalyptic lightning and torrential rain, mostly in Texas. This is the best tornado content I've ever seen, footage is mind-blowing, commentary, music, and editing are top-notch. Hard to believe the adventures of our intrepid storm-chaser aren't a fixture on weather/adventure/calamity television.

No judgement over here man. I tell ya. When I moved from California to N.C., I saw my first tornado! After seeing it, I wanted to become a meteorologist. I only got my two year in science at the community college, but I still wanted to move somewhere I could see more tornados. Watching your videos make me realize there's so many more variables that go into being a storm chaser.Your videos have probably saved other chasers lives.

I always want to see one and I find them fascinating , but when the sirens go off at home, I start becoming very serious and when we get in the shelter I break down, I’m 14 I sound like a girl on her you know what XD

Professional storm chaser, and songwriter. That song playing at the beginning with the white tornado really makes you feel some weird emotions. El reno blues is also a good one, and fheres another I forgot the name of.
