After many hours researching, reading reviews and looking for a good quality self propelled walk behind lawn mower (consumer grade), I ended up choosing the highly praised Toro 20332 3 in 1 mower. Couldn't more more impressed with it!
Check out my video on how to sharpen the blade here: • How to Sharpen Lawn Mo...

Toro lawn mowers are the best. I purchased my first toro mower back in 2003. I run my mower 4 to 6 hours a week. my season runs from April 1 to the middle of November. My yard has lots of hill and bumps. I change oil, air filter and spark plug each season. I periodically adjust the person pace cable. I take the engine shroud off and blow out the trapped dried grass out. I love toro. They make the best snow blowers and lawn mowers. To make them last takes the minimum of attention. Use fuel stable. My stuff starts the first time every time. Toro you guys rock.

Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower kzfaq.infoUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

I work on mowers daily, these Briggs and Stratton flat heads are hands down the best engine toro ever put on these. I still got my 2010 personal pace toro recyler 20332. Fairly flawless setup, one flaw with the early models is they had plastic pinion gear on steel drive gears for the self propelled.. To be fair the mower had probably 800 hours on it. I'm still amazed on still on original piston rings and crank.... Well over 1000 hours. It's just know starting to knock ever so slightly but with the cost of mowers now... And how expensive they got.....KEEP THIS MOWER AS LONG AS YOU CAN! Keep up on oil changes, clean air filter and these flat heads just keep running along.

We have the 20332 for at least 10 years always taken care of it new gas every year, always checked oil, (ran out of oil once while using acouple years ago), always changed air filter when dirty. It has ran great for all these years! Last year we failed to replace air filter on time. This year we had trouble it would stall out, especially in higher grass. Things i noticed that i never noticed before all the years we had it and it was running good was; the idle sounded higher than usual, and i heard a vibrating sound coming from the top of the mower. The color of the oil was very dark so we tipped it and drained out oil and gas but must have tipped it wrong cause a little of the new oil came threw the air filter holes. I let it sit a week and put in new oil and gas and sprayed the holes with started fluid a few times. It ran good for about a day or two then would stall out. Took it to a local guy in the neighborhood that fixes mowers. He cleaned the carborator, replaced the blade, replaced the spark plug and checked fuel line. We got it back it ran for about 20 minutes then as soon as it hit higher grass stalled out and wont start now. I also still hear the vibrating sound from the top of the mower. And also the pull rope i sticking and now stuck and wont pull at all, and we never had a problem with the pull cord before. We paid $90 for the repairs and paid $30 for the new blade. Really dont want to put any more money into it, its a shame they still dont sell this model it ran great for 10 years. Do you know what might be wrong with it? I do remember running over some strips of clear tape from cardboard that we are using as mulch in our landscaping. Could that have gotten stuck underneath inside the mower where we cant see and be slowing down the blade or motor? And if not, is there another newer Toro for sale that compares to the 20332? The review i been reading for all the Toros have alot of bad reviews.

@@skero7359 trying to pin point something over the internet is tough. My first thought would be flat worn out internal parts of the engine if your starting to hear a "knock" and increased vibration, loss of power and stalling. Sounds to me it's in need of new engine parts. Worn piston rings or even worse seized or partially seized are likey the culprit. Take the spark plug out and it should be super easy to pull, if it's still ANY difficult to attempt to pull, engine is worn and your looking at 2-300 to repair. OR it very well could be your pull start also! Again not seeing it in front of me it's hard to tell ya. All this can be done yourself with basic tools. Most rachet sets will have a specific spark plug socket that had a piece of rubber in it. If not you should have enough room to get a wrench on it to loosen it. Another thing to check is if something got wedged up underneath to see if something physically is causing resistance on the output shaft. I would honestly go with another toro that has this same engine. I belive they stopped making it 2016. If your wanting brand new..... Your going to be a bit disappointed. Honda would be my first go to choice. However they are now as of 9/2023 no longer making push mowers so parts availability long term will be an issue. I would go find a lightly used toro like the one you had. They are all over the place and better quality compared the newer ones that are close to $500 after tax!! It's a crap time to buy one. Everyone phasing out qaullty machines, making them cheaper but more expensive

Update: Now owned this mower approx. ~2 months. Man I LOVE this mower. Runs strong & cuts amazingly. I had the opportunity to cut my mom's 1/2 acre of 1+ ft. tall grass with it last week, and it didn't skip a beat. Ripped through it without bogging down hardly at all, and the cut quality was superb. I couldn't be more impressed.

Nice review, I have the 20334 and park it on the sidewalk to wash it out, then just hose off the sidewalk. Because of the fantastic recycling ability of the mower, if you hook the hose to clean standing in the grass, guess what it just keeps recycling. :) Thanks for sharing your video.

Front wheel higher than the back ones for better mulch. That way the leading edge of the mower cuts the top level of the grass, and the trailing edge cuts the grass a second time at the desired length. Therefore cutting the grass twice before it even mulches.

I'm a turfgrass management student and if you want to prevent further winter burn, I suggest seeding with Kentucky Bluegrass. Unlike perennial ryegrass and tall fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass has rhizomes which are underground stems that store energy during intense heat and cold.

Tip: numerous personal pace models including the lawnboy version had a problem with the transmissions failing, because of low quality and insufficient grease in the transmission gear box. Whenever I get one of these mowers new or used I first remove the gear box cover and scrape out most of the factory grease and replace it with a good quality grease. Hope that helps.

@1fido007 Sucks to hear of your issue with the blade brake. That's one reason why I choose this 20332 model (reviewed in video) as it's the non-blade brake version. (BB vsn is 20333) Many brands that include the blade brake feature usually have either the brake or the braking mechanism fail before anything else on the mower. KISS principles need to be kept in mind when buying anything, including mowers. If you're unable to repair it yourself, I suggest taking it to any small engine repair shop.

2019 model about the same. Bag emptying is very awkward (for those who bag) smart stow feature is a bust. It leaks gas & oil. Still I'm very happy with my machine. But that's my honest review. I believe gas stabilizer is a must. I've seen people have issues. I'm from L.A. we mow all year long. Manual says no oil changes needed for the life of engine. Yeah, right. I change mines. Runs great. Just need to state the facts.

I mow for a living and have a personal pace too... i bought my machine new and started having issues with it within the first year. The drive gears are plastic so they dont last long. If your looking for a self propelled mower, get front wheel drive, less issues and usually last longer. Really a shame mine is messed up, the cut is really nice.

I purchased this model in 2001 and am looking to replace it. I had NO PROBLEMS in 12 years of regular use on a 1/2 acre plot. I used it for everything: mulching, bagging side discharge, shredding of brush (that's right...) and leaf vacuuming. I have not seen anything in this review or anything else online that says it would be a mistake to purchase. Note to Eganwp : Cut your grass when it is 4.5 inches high to a height of 3". Longer blades of grass absorb more light and give the roots more food. Much more important than mulching...

I picked up a Toro 20332 today myself looks great. You mentioned synthetic oil after the first two oil changes. What type or brand from what store if I should stick to using synthetic be used for this mower. Great video, someone also mentioned about not using Grease on the bearings which will cause grass and dirt build up which makes sense. Any idea from where to purchase a metal drive to replace the plastic ones, would it be a good idea?

Just wanted to update everyone asking if I still recommend the mower? My reply is an astounding YES! It's now going into its 3rd season and it hasn't skipped a beat or had a single issue. I sharpened the blade once for a tutorial more than anything as it wasn't hardly needed, and have changed the oil a few times. I threw in a new plug and air filter just to keep it running well, but both definitely didn't need to be changed yet. I still highly recommend this mower to everyone!

@halflife82
@halflife82 12 жыл бұрын
@workensmart I should have clarified the grease thing in the video. Anytime you use two differing materials in a gear setup, the softer material gear will wear down before the other one (logically). Generally in such a design, there's no need for grease at all, especially in an open dirty envrionment as MNETHRID mentioned below. The only reason I did it is because a I have a small clean lawn, and am not using this in a very dirty env't.

I own this mower, actually between my forming girlfriend (now wife) and I , we have gone through 4 of them in two seasons . . . well I suppose you could say we still have one . . . The TORO Recycler 22 is the worst possible mower ever made. #1: in mulching mode it leaves huge clumps of grass in its trail. #2: in mulching mode you need to stop and tilt the mower back to allow the huge accumulation of grass clippings to fall out and make big grass piles all over your yard #3: if you don't do number two, then you mower will stall out and you will have to wait about 30 minutes before you will be able to start again #4: if you are foolish enough to buy this Toro mower, plan to spend at least double the amount of time (to accommodate #2). #5: If you are foolish enought to buy this Toro mower, plan to mow your lawn every 3-4 days or you can expect the time it takes to mow to be 4 times as long as it would with a normal working mower - aka - not a TORO. #6: never, ever, under any circumstance buy a lawn mower made by MTD - which nearly all US lawn mowers are made by.

I bought one a week ago and used it once. After it warmed up about 5 minutes, it sounded like it wanted to stall after pressing the self-propel bar. I waited about 10 minutes and tried again. Worked smoothly for 10 minutes or so and stall flutter happened again. I went back to the store and was told by a service tech that he had other customers experience the same thing. They market it as "guaranteed to start". He told me another customer bought one and tried for an hour to start it. He returned it and so will I.

Gary Tarolli If you're handy with tools, check the spark gap, that the plug is tightened (don't overtighten), that the air filter is clean and that the gas line isn't clogged. I know, it's new; but sometimes storage of the new mowers causes them to act old. Another problem with small engines is the gas sump has a filter on it that does not always reach to the bottom of the gas tank. You can diagnose this easily by checking if the mower always performs well with a COMPLETELY full gas tank. If it starts to act up around half full, could be the sump hose needs to be pushed further into the gas tank.

@petscanning Yep, I still love it. Seems like there's a lot of cheap quality junk out there today in anything you buy. For once, this is a product that just feels like and works like a quality high-end piece of equipment. I can't recommend it more highly! The Personal Pace compared to all other mowers I've ever tried and used nearly sells the mower alone!

A friend of mine has one he bought 12 years ago with the aluminum deck - only problem, he had to replace a drive wheel - he cuts a steep hill. Mine - so far so good. I waxed the underside of my last mower when I bought it. It didn't seem to be a benefit. I clean the underside of mine with a wood door shim.

The grease is left out for a reason. As this is an open gear and working in a very dirty environment the grease would only serve to attract dirt and clippings, promoting tooth damage and increasing pressure on the hub surface which leads to slop on the axle.

@Eganwp- What do you think of it now? It's been a few years sine you posted this video. I recent;y bought a used one from Clist and it worked great the first time I used it, but it started making a rattle sound (now I know its a grinding sound) toward the end of the cut. My yard is almost half an acre. The next time I cut grass, the drive would barely move the wheels and they tend to not release for rolling backwards...I've got some troubleshooting to do. It's a great mower and I absolutely love the engine. 1-2 pulls to start beats the heck out of my old riding mower that was also a pull start.

Indy HotDog Any links to a good writeup or video? I took the wheels off and the axles spin freely with no resistance out of the ordinary. I removed the screws from the transmission case but the cover wouldn't come off with slight prying, and I didn't want to break it so I put the screws back in. I greased the small gear on the end of the axles and pried the wheel mounting plate out slightly, because it seemed to grind less if the wheels were toed-out instead of in, but it didn't solve it completely. I first tried shims, but it didn't even come close to changing the angle and it was reducing the gear contact patch, so I removed them. I was able to cut my grass afterwards with minimal problems, besides one wheel not rolling backwards. Usually the right one. The grinding sound only happened when I initiated the drive going uphill this time. Thanks Indy.

thanks for the video, the people at ACE hardware said I never have to change the oil, is that true?

The new Briggs and Stratton engines claim no oil changes are needed but I would always change the oil. I’m sure it’ll just break down faster if you never change the oil and/or just add oil when it needs it. Can’t be that good for the engine.

My problem with string pull mowers is that after a year of two you can throw out that 1 pull BS. Eventually the strings fray and break. I've had this happen with my last 2 mowers.

Rubbing the inside of the deck with baby oil keeps grass from building inside. My friend uses baby oil when mudding with his truck to keep mud from building up in the wheel wells. It easy to work with. just sqeeze on and wipe off.

Everette Singleton Thanks for this; my thoughts too. The only exception is for snow blowers that must be started below 40° F, where I would use 5W30 instead.

***** My rear drive belts doesn't last very long and is a pain to change. But it still starts on the first pull of the cord. Very hard to beat the personal pace feature too.

I have both the Toro Super Recycler and the Toro Recycler. I would say just pay the extra money and get a Super Recycler. The alumunium deck on the Super Recycler is a lot lighter then the Steel deck on the Recycler. That would be my choice in walk behind mowers.
