Using 1/4" steel, I replace a worn out wear/scraper bar on a Toro 724 Snow Blower. A quick interweb search yielded no results for the part so I decided to make my own for the cost of the scrap which was less than $2.00. Thanks for watching! Please share, like and all of the good stuff!

Always make sure both tires have the same amount of air in them and the surface is level. You can use a leveler tool to be precise. The scraper bar adjustment will not be correct if either is off. BTW manufacturers recommend the scraper bar be adjusted 1/8 from ground.

Did I miss you repairing the skid shoes at the same time you did the scraper bar. I have never seen skid shoes worn out so badly as those.

Kids, this why you do a test drilling on the scrap before drilling into the final product.

Weld a piece of rebar for wear to bottom of your worn out skid shoes. The way they are now they will wear down quickly even though you have heavy duty scraper bar now.

You could also tach mig the round part of the shave plate bold to the plate so the bolt doesn’t turn.

Can you give us an update on how well the new wear bar with the new thickness, how well it did for holding up?

nice job brother it looks like you got all the toys in your shop. now all I have to do is get you to swap stickers with me LOL. if that bolt loosens up again you can always hit it with a little tack weld just big enough to grind off later if you have to.

That's interesting. They must have done away with the spring loaded blade on the newer Toros blowers. All four of mine have spring loaded scraper bars on them so they swing back out of the way when you hit something sticking up and saves the blade from undo wear. All may wear bars are still pretty good yet and some of them are 35 years old!

No wonder it wore, you have no bottoms on the skid shoes.

Surprised you didn't make the holes smaller and file them square. Still, nice work.

Nice job! Are those skid plates stock? I thought they would be angled at the bottom?
@VintageWoodWorkshop

Kodi Ham thanks! yeah they were stock and might have had a slight angle when new but not too much from the looks of it. hard to tell from it being so worn down though!

Yup, skid plates are totally worn out, they should have a flat surface on the bottom with a angled rise front and back. Also looking at the way the scraper blade was worn as well as the damage to the auger blades, he should have replaced the skid plates a long time ago or since he has a nice shop, weld a 1/4" x 1" piece of flat bar with angled ends to the old, worn out skid plate.

If your shoes are adjusted properly there should be very little wear on the bar you replaced. Usually to set the shoes you set a nickel or two under the wear bar so it isn't actually making contact with pavement. Just the shoes should ride on pavement.

Or maybe just spending 10-20$'s for new skid shoes will prevent the wear to the scraper blade as well as the damage I see in the video, to the auger blades are worn, damaged, like the scraper blade was.

Lol. First, buy a welder, then buy a metal shop saw, then a drill press, then blah blah blah. $4000 later you fabricate a part you can buy on Amazon. Excellent work, but not for Harry Homonerr with a little tool box.

You'd be amazed at how cheap used tools are! I built up an entire working shop for less than $1000. IMO the $ isn't the problem...some guys are either scared of power tools or their wives won't let them have power tools. Don't be that guy; read, watch videos and buy power tools which will save you in the long run by DIY. Craigslist, flea markets, garage sales, and Facebook marketplace are your friends. For example here's how much I paid for some of the first tools: Skil saw $15 Table Saw $40 Drill Press $150 Band Saw $75 Radial Arm Saw and cabinet $30 Jointer $175 Metal Cutting Bandsaw $175 wood lathe $100 Most of these are heavy cast iron Craftsman or Delta from the 40s to 60s with quality that isn't made anymore.
