I don't think the Leafs should get rid of Marner or Tavares. Marner has lots of potential--he just needs the right coach to light a fire under his ass. Berube is that coach. Tavares is a good Captain and will also benefit from Berube's coaching style. Tavares might not score as often as Mathews but he scores when it matters. We have a good team especially with these new additions.

They probably signed him so he doesn't walk and we get nothing. As bad as he is he is still a rhd and once the market dries out he will be easy to move I think.

He was not a UFA and was signed before July 1st.

Agreed. They are leftover parts from great teams. Teams who have stud d-men and found no use for these guys anymore. They are not going to get younger or more motivated sporting a Leafs jersey. We’re still tinkering around the edges with whoever is available and who we can afford in our cap hell.

The problem with Tyler is that he was more expensive, and with our cap situation and needing to get better at the blue line, it is harder to get a 5m than a 3.75m. those 1.25m can be a difference for other signings and although we all loved Bert, he got the contract he wanted with a team that should be great moving forward and had plenty of cap space.

You haven't been paying attention. 5 of the Panthers were 30 years or older and 5 more were just under 30. The reality is that Stanley Cup winning teams are not the younger teams.

Also its a way of overpaying and getting around the salary cap signing older players long term. Leafs have the money.
