In today's video, we look back on "TORQUE" (2004). Warner Brother's attempt at making "The Fast and the Furious" with motorcycles.
"Torque" (2004) is often described as "The Fast and the Furious" with motorcycles, but it failed to capture the same success. Directed by Joseph Kahn, this action-packed film starred Martin Henderson, Ice Cube, Monet Mazur, and Adam Scott. Despite featuring cool bikes, thrilling stunts, and intense chase scenes, "Torque" was universally panned. This video explores why "Torque" flopped so badly. Between studio interferance, script changes, and the vision the director had for the movie. It examines what went wrong in this infamous attempt to bring the street racing craze to the world of motorcycles. Whether you're a fan of "The Fast and the Furious" or just curious about movie flops, this video provides all the details on why "Torque" missed the mark.

*FYI:* This is an updated version of a video that I made back in 2022. I deleted the original upload earlier this year amidst my channel getting de-monetized, because I was convinced that the older version of this video caused the problem (I had a trimmed down version of the movie's intro within the first thirty seconds of the video, with no commentary during that section). But I was able to re-record the dialogue and throw in some added content, so consider this the 2024 director's cut 🎬 Thanks for watching 🏍 Chapters: Intro 0:00 "Fast and Furious" Popularity 0:37 Director Joseph Kahn Fights with WB 1:38 Torque as a response to / send-up of F&F 3:10 Hot Temperatures / Faizon Love Fired 5:20 Special Effects and Re-Shoots 6:30 Torque Failure & BIKER BOYZ Connection 7:26 Director's Regrets / Bad Marketing 8:50 Cult Film Status 9:59 Fast & Furious Fatigue 11:06 Outro 12:18

I'm so glad you've reuploaded you video on Torque. I was worried when you deleted it. I wanna throw my two cents on Torque. I love it and it's genuinely one of my favourite films. It's the complete epitomisation of early 2000s action cinema. Endless product placement, MTV quick-cut commercial style editing, overabundant CGI that looks like a PS2 game cutscene. I think it's better than any of the F&F films for simply being as self-aware as it is. All that's missing from the film to complete the 2000s aesthetic is Blink-182, but ending with a Nickelback song is just as good.

Couldn't agree more. The only F&F film I truly enjoy is "Tokyo Drift", simply because Lucas Black played the lead character in such a goofy way. Also Sung Kang as Han rocks.

I watched that movie in the mid 2000s and the very first sign of problem with it was actually the title itself - Torque... something motorcycles famously lack. Even something more remote and dumber like "Red Heat" or "Desert Rider" or "Hot Ride" would've been a way more acceptable name for a bike movie. Then when we add that this was one of the first movies, tailored for less than 10% of the audience, it's easy to understand why it failed. I mean i meet close to 100 different people everyday in i still know less than 10 people who actually ride motorcycles. Then on top of that is the premise - drugs in motorcycles... what the actual f**k. A single Cadillac Escalade would easily fit more drugs inside itself than 20 bikes combined. You could literally feel they reworked a car-chase movie script, replacing the cars with bikes. Success though simply doesn't work that way.

The world of subtle parodies is a dangerous one, it's hard to strike a good balance when attacking another work, if you lean too much into the mocking side you end up with an incredibly goofy and even bitter product, BUT if you play it too straight then it will be seen as just another one of those things. A great example of a great parody would be Kung Fusion, the thing apparently mocks kung fu movies stereotypes and has a silly tone, yet the action is impressive, the characters are memorable and when it gets serious it doesn't feel jarring.

Totally was in this scene during this era. The year before, they released Biker Boyz and there were huge motorcycle meetups in the parking lots, stunt shows etc. The following year they released Torque, We all got together and went and watched. The movie was so bad that we actually complained and got our money back. We expected something similar to Biker Boyz with Ice Cube. Several years later I picked up a copy out of a Walmart $5 bin as a gag. Watched the movie and thought it was sooo bad it was actually entertaining as heck to watch. I now laugh at the chick knife/bike fight instead of being appalled. Movie was marketed wrong, released at the wrong time.

I look at it retrospectively now as a parody. It's a "leave your brain at home and enjoy it for the pisstake that it is" sorta movie. Fast and Furious 5 before its time. As a 16 year old motorcycle enthusiast at the time of its release, it was bike porn. I personally thought Monet Mazur (Epic's sister) was really hot as a biker chick. The bike models, such as the 954 FireBlade was present and correct as was the 03 R1. I quite liked how they reskinned enduro bikes with sports bike fairings to do the cross-desert scene too, so there's still some practical elements that I could appreciate back then. But watching it retrospectively, I appreciate the subtle jibs and ribs a bit better.

I'm sure you're right that the month/year and the advertisement had a lot to do with this film bombing, but I think the reason why Fast & Furious was successful and Torque wasn't is also because of the type of vehicle. Firstly, billions of people drive cars and only a very small fraction ride motorcycles. Cars are more relatable than motorcycles. Secondly, and this I believe is understated, cars are more attractive than motorcycles are, in part because they're not only customizeable, but people can visibly see and show off their vehicles to the public. I'm not saying motorcycles aren't customizeable, of course they are, but it's not as attractive nor as visible to the public.
