Watch the construction of the new Bentley Mulsanne twin turbo V8 motor, built by a small group of engineers in a corner workshop of the Crewe facility. This 6.75 liter, 412 cubic in V8 twin turbo motor is documented to produce 505hp at 4200 RPM and 752 lb feet of torque.

If it's so flawless, why are the engines built by Cosworth so unreliable? Granted, the original 6.75 was never a Lexus V8 by any stretch, but everything Cosworth touches (ford engines), is a disaster!

What truly amazes me is how light that flywheel is. I've been working as a tech for quite a long time and on normal production cars the flywheel weights a ton!

The torque-converter gets bolted to that drive-plate. That, in effect, is the "flywheel".

The normal weight of the flywheel is now included in the torque converter to smooth out pulsation. It has internal damping springs like a manual transmission clutch…

@Ultrakillerism
@Ultrakillerism 10 жыл бұрын
That's not really inaccurate, AMG-badged Mercs also got handbuilt engines, and they sell a much higher volume worldwide (also cheaper to some extent) than Bentley does. Also, not even Bugatti engines are 100% hand built, they follow the same procedure as any other hand built engine: get the parts and assemble them.
@Muler3627
@Muler3627 10 жыл бұрын
Ultrakillerism I think the point eurocon is making, is that the single engine isn't assembled by a single engineer - whereas, for example a Nissan GT-Rs engine is assembled by one individual.

Was actually thinking more along the lines of the customer's perception given how much they have just spent on said handbuilt engine also Ive worked in marketing for large corps before and this little faux pa would go down like a lead balloon come monday morning round the big table. Its good honest journalism however wont get you many more factory visits if the management know you do not omit obvious fucks ups like that lol.. hence why their is very little honest journalism :P
@brotato_tx
@brotato_tx 10 жыл бұрын
I guess I'm not understanding your point. How is it inaccurate to describe that these engines are hand-built? As stated in the video, only FIVE engines are completed in a single day. Just because they aren't forging their own blocks like medieval blacksmiths, and use modern equipment to assist in the assembly and quality control, doesn't take away from the fact that every single component is touched by human fingers and put in place by expert craftsmen. Plus I doubt anyone on their marketing team would cringe upon watching the video since it's extremely likely that they played a large role in approving Drive's visit to the factory.

Mark Farrar If one person built each engine then I could see putting that one persons name on it saying it was built by that one person. Bentley puts one persons name on there engines saying it was built by that one person, yet they are built by at least five different people on any particular day. Since it isn't built by just one person, then those little badges don't mean a damn thing. They should just say hand built. Honda had one person building the older Type-R engines and they would sight a plaque that said they had built it, AMG also does this. In both instances, those engines were hand built by ONE person, where as at Bentley, that just isn't the case as this vid clearly shows. So, to answer your question of why is it inaccurate to say they are hand built. It isn't, but you are missing the point. That point is, Bentley doesn't have just ONE person build the engine by hand like the engine plaque says, they have MORE than one person building each engine, which makes the engine plaque completely useless. Does that clear your confusion up?

RR didn't "become" Bentley. VW beat BMW's bid and owned the facilities and some RR icons but NOT THE NAME. Vickers owns the RR name and licenses it to BMW. VW sold the RR grille shape, and hood ornament trademark to BMW to ensure engine supply during transition. So no. Also, the '63 Ferrari GTO that just recently sold for $52m escaped your attention.

Disappointed to find out it's not one single engine worker assembling the engine. I believe the corvette z06 or the zr1 motors are built by one person per engine. I wonder if AMG is the same way as Bentley.
@Dr_Xyzt
@Dr_Xyzt 10 жыл бұрын
This is a glorified LS engine, but with some really thick looking iron liners. 6.75 liters = 412 cubic inches. The valve reliefs in the pistons are symmetric so they can one piston design on both sides of the engine. Oddly enough, the engine only revs to like 5000 rpm, but it has shaft mount rockers. GM guys build 8500 rpm engines with those shaft mount rockers. I guess they're on there just for NVH reduction.
@Dr_Xyzt
@Dr_Xyzt 10 жыл бұрын
It's got a 1342 crankshaft, so it probably has the typical European crossplane V8 firing order of 18736542 (GM numbers) or 15486372 in linear numbering. The driver's side of the engine appears to be the rearward bank, so if you go by "forward bank numbering" it's probably be 12784563 (Odd passenger bank) or 18427365 (ascending driver's side).

Well, I got into the stock market, made good on bitcoin and others, but I bought a KingAir 350i instead! Every time Cosworth touch an engine, it turns into cr@p. From the fords in the 80's and 90;'s, to this latest iteration of the famed 6.75. Granted, the 6.75 was never a Lexus/Toyota V8, but things went down hill when VW took over ... as VAG cars are total cr@p as well when it comes to reliability.

Never judge a book by its cover! His knowledge is exemplary, and his capability is unquestionable. However it's a shame that the engine is not hand built by one man. Even in a modern factory, with robotic and high end tools , the engine is still not built to last a life time! It's about time giant organisations start to realise our world resources and build with pride and knowledge that we can help the future generations to a longer lasting car. Peace, love and health to all.

true. But I know Bentley is a company upheld to tradition and that big 6.75 is likely to be revered forever. And there's not a thing wrong with that. Just nice to have other options as well. But yea they are VW engines and the V8 is Bentley's own
@GERntleMAN
@GERntleMAN 10 жыл бұрын
Jacksonkellyfreak I agree except for one part: the Audi engine is a Audi engine. It's developed seperatly from VW plants and is only developed by Audi engineers using only Audi developed parts which are produced mostly in Audi plants. There are rarely common parts between any VW engine and the Audi V8's. It's a common mistake to assume, Audi and VW being the same.
