Hi all, I’m disabled. I’m speech dyslexic, my sister is severely epileptic and my parents have their own needs. I’m a carer for my parents and my sister. My sister is severely bright, creative and colourful with arts. She the best long term memory you could ever imagine. She’s in a disability college at the moment learning practical skills. It’s not that disabled people can’t work (despite those who literally cannot work because of severe pain/mental health conditions) - it’s that the work place isn’t fitted for them. It’s archaic, Victorian and not accessible. It about time that work *evolves* and becomes *adaptable for all disabled people’s needs and environment!* Britain won’t fully achieve its full potential productivity if it doesn’t accept change and adaptions in the workplace

This! If policy makers understood the Social Model of disability, listened to disabled people, were less harsh in PIP assessments for in-work people etc a lot more of us could work

Agree with you both, when you look at the figures for disabled people in work over the pandemic when everyone was working with home, it should have been the easiest time for us to secure and hold a job with adjustments for work from home. It was utterly depressing that the reverse happened and unemployment jumped by 47%! For alot of disabled ppl the world became more accessible when everything went virtual and we kept none of it!

The crumbling infrastructure, the waiting lists for care, the no dentists, the can't get an affordable and decent retirement home for granny, can't afford a house can't afford rent and food prices through the roof, 2% NI cut is only going to mean less money to fix these problems. People don't care for a 2% cut, keep the 2% and fix the country first.

I own a business and paid taxes and employed people. After a degenerative disease hit me I retired and as soon as I did the state thought I was scum. My PIP took 3 years to get. I'm 3 months in and they've sent me an annual review letter or something (although I suspect it's Roshi trying to get me off PIP). So... another wait?

I had a home and business until Sunak abandoned 3.5 million of us freelancers during Covid. It took seven years to build my business from absolutely nothing, and I just watched it all fall apart. It destroyed my mental health too. I also became scum in the eyes of the Tory Reich. It took me just over 2 years and a judge to get PIP. My illness is continuing to get worse because the Tories have cut mental health services and I can't get treatment. I'm only still here out of spite. I'll still be here when they're confined to the dustbin of history. Take care fellow scum!

They usually send PIP review form around a year before your claim is scheduled to end, I think it is (in theory) to ensure a smooth transition so you don't go without payment. I think it is more likely an intimidation tactic. Be sure to get a recorded assessment, don't let them bully you into not having it recorded. and call them a week after your assessment to request the assessors report so you know which areas you might need to appeal.

Growing the economy is a bit of a red herring. The benefits of 20 years of growth in the past went entirely to the rich. Unless the distribution of the growth is distributed to the people and government growth will only increase inequality further and acchieve nothing absolutely nothing for the country.

In fairness, they've had an economist on in the past several times (who is now running for Labour according to his most recent interview) who points out that *just* reducing inequality isn't a good solution either, and what we need is a combination of reducing inequality (so the poorer classes can feel the benefits) and consistent/steady growth (so there are benefits to feel). I'm a big believer in taxing the rich and the welfare state and even outright socialist policies like a universal basic income etc. but without growth you'll struggle to maintain any economy I think, and the narrative that we have to chose between equality and growth is rubbish to begin with (not that you necessarily were saying that). I'd say that the economist had the right idea, and you can have and do need both for the poor to be better off and to build an economy that's healthy in the long term
@sluglife9785
@sluglife9785 9 күн бұрын
@@Cenitopius I do have to defer to their expertise on this, because I'm not educated in the field, but I worry that the particular obsession with high growth in this context is there specifically because they can't or won't tax 'old wealth' enough to increase redistribution and properly bring down inequality. So they are stuck having to tax 'new wealth', which means they need more wealth creation, and thus constant growth. Give me the likes of a functioning wealth tax and other policies to repossess a sensible chunk of old wealth, and if the apparent need for high growth still exists, fine by me.

As someone with experience of long-term unemployment because of severe mental illness, I can attest to the fact that the approach to people like me tends to make the problem a whole lot worse. You take someone who is psychologically vulnerable, and then you pile a bunch of guilt and pressure on them, with the warped assumption that this will force them into work. The struggle of unemployment, it presumably goes, must be heavier than the struggle of work. Now, with people who are actually mentally healthy and 'lazy', or whatever, that might be effective. But with people who are ill, it makes them more ill. I went from being alienated and depressed, to feeling like I was absolutely hated and constantly under attack. Which turned me into a total basket case of interminable terror, despair, and sometimes rage. I was like a shuddering dog, hiding in the corner, terrified of getting another beating. I did try working a few times (zero hours agency stuff, naturally) because of the sheer amount of pressure on me (including having benefits just stopped), but by that point I was too ill, mentally and physically, to cope with it for more than a few weeks at a time. I had absolutely no support, just 'responsibilities'. I could feel that even the many GPs I saw considered me an irritant and an unaffordable burden. I was utterly desperate, expressed that desperation, and no one cared. The mental illness only became more entrenched, albeit that barely felt possible, when my mother, who had herself been briefly hospitalised after a breakdown, before being discharged by the NHS with a diagnosis of 'histrionic personality disorder' - a dismissive diagnosis which means neurotic attention seeking - hanged herself. I'm conscious that to some extent lessons are slowly being learned, the attitude towards and understanding of mental illness has improved, and there are actually more support programs that have popped up in the past few years, even under the Tories. But discrimination, heightened by austerity coupled with the neoliberal ethic of personal responsibility, will have laid waste to a good number of people. And it will be an uphill and probably expensive struggle to make most of the survivors anywhere near 'employable'. So don't start fantasising too deeply. That will only create unrealistic expectations which themselves will lead to more discrimination.

Thank you for making Deaths of Despair, didn't know about the documentary but it's much needed. Brian's point (echoed by Ed at 20:00) is so true, I've sometimes avoided social situations in fear of this question. Thing is, a lot of us do significant caregiving for each other when the state fails us, voluntary work and campaigning - it just might be a little too scattered or radical to put on our CV. I do housing casework for an anarchist tenants union, which was part of my former paid job but that was so rushed and in an inaccessible noisy environment which among other reasons was totally inaccessible. Doing less hours with more flexibility, less auditory processing issues or migraine triggers, and losing the government-directed gatekeeping means I can provide a better service

I think politics nerds overestimate how much the general population is engaged in politics. Most people don't have time to read manifestos or understand policy. They're too busy with their job(s), the school run, worrying about making ends meet, etc. And, if they're lucky, finding some moments of joy with friends and family. They rely on the media and word of mouth to be told that they need to know. So, if the politician or paper they've been told to trust patronises them by saying "ECHR bad. ECHR hurts our freedom" they don't have time to critically investigate. They just believe it

You couldnt work in my workplace with mobility issues. This is not because the job is physical. You could easily do it in a wheelchair. There is no infrastructure for people with mobility issues (there is no lift for example). From what I have been told, interviewers will always find a reason to employ someone who is physically able over a person with limited mobility. They will just find a reason to say that the able person is more qualified. I'm not even sure this is malice, its public sector and we just don't have the funding.

30 hours free childcare is amazing on paper. However, like all great plans is it doesnt work holistically in practice. Nurseries do not provide the true 30 hours free childcare to working parents, only offering it to those parents on benefits. The nurseries appear to be covering costs / balancing the books by increasing the fee's covered to the optioned 30 hours "Free" chilcare to non benefit parents. It could be corrected if the politicians that legislate these policies, to workshop with parents and nurseries to find out how to actually make a great idea work.

Love the pod guys but the audio is sending me up the wall with discomfort. Your mics are entirely too clear and too focused. I can hear every breath and every little lip smack it's quite uncomfortable.

Though the Greens building of home plan is small, reforming renting and buy to let is 70% of the housing crisis. Not just the number of homes. There are meany properties but they are not being bought due to being expensive/ rented out.

Here’s how Labour get Deano on side: - pledge to give homeless veterans their own home - pledge to cut migration by training our own, especially apprenticeships - pothole fund - cut business rates for pubs - something on care so that Nana doesn’t have to sell his inheritance

That's kind of what you do with a sponsorship. And besides, having followed the run it seemed he genuinely loved the product, and that it made a huge difference for him, which obviously makes it easier to sell.
