I am 73 yrs old and not at all tech minded, following your excellent Instructions I have just replaced the keyboard on my laptop. I was quoted $90 from the tech store, purchased a keyboard on e-bay for $20 so have saved $70. Thank you so much xx

This was very useful. On my Toshiba Satellite 650 there some differences (1) There isn't a screw on the back, under the battery (2) there were no tabs on the side of the key board. (3) Most importantly, for the ribbon cable, the ribbon isn't locked/unlocked by pulling the black bar up. Instead slide the white bar that is under the black bar up, in the direction of the base of the screen, after the new ribbon cable is inserted, slide the white bar down, (toward the mouse pad). The old cable released without sliding the white bar up, but the keyboard did not function if the white bar is not pushed down (toward the mouse pad) apparently it grips onto the cable. Also spilled beer on the key board, the new one works fine. Very simple, easy and not expensive to replace. Thanks for the video, I wouldn't have tried without this instruction.

This is very helpful - the exact procedure will vary, my L770D does not need a screw removing from underneath but it's a VERY GOOD idea to remove the battery before you start this. The keyboard is very easy to switch out - the only tricky bit is getting the cable out of the keyboard connector and then reinserting the new keyboard cable into the connector - mine had a white plastic securing tab that came out completely when I removed the cable but with a little fiddling it went back in afterwards. Total time to switch the keyboard after watching the video was about 3 minutes - I've replaced other laptop keyboards before and this is very simple swap out! Thanks!

This may have been "old hat" to you, but for me it was a new experience. You made it look easy, and gave me the confidence to try this repair myself, rather than the much more expensive option of replacing the whole darn laptop. Thank you.

I was totally baffled regarding the ribbon cable, until I watched this. You saved me from having to replace the keyboard AND LOCKING piece (which is soldered onto the laptop)!! Thank you! Your video REALLY helped me immensely!

This keyboard is so easily broken. If you so much as lift a key up even slightly, it clicks out of place and never feels right again no matter how hard you try to fix it. Having to clean between the keys is great fun. This video is a lifesaver.

I'm happily typing this comment with my newly installed keyboard! Thanks so much for the video. I never did find a Phillips head screw to remove under the battery which may be why I can't get the trim back on, but maybe I just haven't had enough coffee. :) It took longer than 10 minutes since I had to let the cats out, get coffee after I started, get a damp paper towel to get all the cat barf crumbs out of the edges (the cause of the need for a new keyboard.) It's so nice to be able to type more than one click of a mouse on the screen again. Thanks again for sharing your know-how.

Thank you. I bought a very used laptop, and after much cleaning, decided it would be easier to just replace the keyboard, than try to get the crud out of the (several) non-working keys. I had replaced a keyboard on a ancient Thinkpad, and with your help, this was actually easier! ("Hi!" to the beautiful dog in the reflection, too.)

I had never changed a keyboard before but wanted to try. I have a Satellite L655. I watched several tutorials, some said to loosen or take out the screw in the battery compartment, some didn't. I couldn't see how it was related to the keyboard, so didn't, but then when I was putting the new one in place I loosened it I thought it might give more space or wiggle room. Also in the tutorial videos I watched you are the only one that said to test it before putting it back together, though I had already thought of that, going from past experience fixing things. I had thought getting the ribbon cable in would be the hard part, bu tit just sort of slips in and is held by the black bar. What I found hardest was getting the bevel trim snapped back in flat. I think I am afraid to push down and be too aggressive with things like that.

Great vid! My L675 S7108 was a little different. No screw holding the keyboard on in the back. I just took off the trim piece and the four screws. The keyboard came out real easy. Also, no bar holding the ribbon. It slid in to the connector and is held by friction. Super easy fix and the keyboard cost me less than $20 on EBAY.

Used this guide for an older L305 - same principals in how it's taken apart, with only small, subtle differences -- most notably in that the clip that locks down the keyboard's ribbon cable doesn't seem to be lockable. I just pulled the ribbon out, and slid the new one in. Also used the opportunity to install a new network card, to upgrade from G to dual-band N. :)

Thank you so much for this step by step guide to taking out the keyboard and replacing with a new one, I have to admit the ribbon part was the hardest part for me ie disconnecting not reconnecting the new one. I have a bigger problem now as my brother brought this Toshiba laptop home to the UK with him as a present for my Grandaughter off her Great Grandad, as its been out of action for a year its gone back to my Dads name and none of us can remember his password, so were stumped :( Hopefully we will overcome this soon :)

Ok, if I’m correct, the keyboards for the Toshiba laptops are model specific. I’ve had one keyboard put on my laptop many years ago. I watched the tech who did the work, and the procedure was the same as what this guy did in this video. So, can someone tell me where I will find what series my Toshiba is? I’m not referring to the model number, or serial number. I’m referring to the series number, as in Toshiba Satellite (A665, or C302). I don’t know if that letter and those numbers in parentheses are correct numbers, and letters, but that is what I need to know. BUT, before I get a new keyboard, is that the letter/number series I need to know in order to get the keyboard?
