This Tosh came in as a No POST, let's look at how to approach this, starting from the easy fixes, then progressing to the more technical solutions. Spoilers below:
BIOS chip was corrupted, and we reprogrammed it. Handy that I just did a big video about BIOS programming 👌

Not a home computer repair story but they weren't around when this happened... The cleaning reminded me of a repair I did back in the early 1980s to a CRT television. It was in a house with such heavy smokers that the tar/nicotine had built up on the back of the CRT causing severe arcing from the EHT. Having removed the nicotine from the back of the tube which stopped the arcing, I noticed the tar/nicotine had also covered the outside of the wooden case. Being kind I decided to clean it off using foam cleaner making it look much better and more pleasant to touch. However, when I returned the TV to the customer the change in colour from dark to light brown was so drastic they claimed the TV I had returned was not theirs and that I had swapped it for another one!!!!!!!! It took a LOT of convincing to persuade them it was theirs. After that I didn't have the heart to tell them that the BLUE gun on the CRT had no emission and that all they were seeing was RED/GREEN. The blue component of the picture is so small anyway and it had deteriorated over time so they didn't notice and were quite happy watching it that way ..... or perhaps their glasses were also covered in tar/nicotine and they couldn't see it :-)

Nice repair, I would always test power rails before doing the bios, You still could get fan spin if the CPU V core is missing or dead CPU, I hate it when I get laptops and they messed with the bios and it was a power rail, I had a Lenovo which came in because of a failed bios update, the laptop was completely dead no power, Reprogram the EC Chip (build in eeprom) and it worked. Usually I would check to see if the charging lights comes on, Normally that would indicate a good EC eeprom file but there was no charging light because of the corrupted EC eeprom, just a quick way to test the EC eeprom. 👍 Super IO term comes from the old desktop boards.

At least with this design, you don't have to take the motherboard out in order to replace the thermal paste and clean out the fan... whilst I do have a Packard Bell that is accessible by just the rear panels, it is so much better than my old overheating Acer which needed the motherboard to come out. I didn't bother with it, and just sold it on.

My L655 has held up wonderfully. Noticed you could socket a cpu in it a year or so ago and bought a 560m to upgrade it with. Was the p6200. Only thing I hate about it is that the cmos battery isn't easily accessable. Have to take the whole motherboard out. Then it isn't even the standard cr2032. Some thicker smaller cell.

Every computer repair person has their own order in which they do checks. Nobody should complain about the specific order. I myself choose a different checklist order and we usually come to get to PC issue at some point. I clean the fans and repaste the heatsink on every computer that I repair (if possible), to others such a detailed cleaning is a waste of time. You do good work, pay no attention to the naysayers.

I do have C55 with the same symptoms. I really liked your repair video. I attempt to reflash the BIOS, which did not work. With the new BIOS, the laptop did not try to start at all (no power cycle). Returning the original BIOS brings back the old symptoms. I'm guessing my BIOS bin is not correct. Where did you able to find the BIOS .bin file? I did find only some .fd files, but they contain extra data, not a clean BIOS bin.

When working with the BIOS chips, shouldn't the CMOS battery be removes as well? And I've been using bismuth based solder lately. Probably not for high current mosfets but the lower melting temp helps when working within delicate areas and don't need to remove it like low-melt solder.

Nice video! Thanks! Do you have any experience modifying BIOS .bin files such as the ME section and replacing the serial number of the machine in it? I'm just curious if you find a dump bios .bin file, will it work without it? It's becoming more and more difficult to find BIOS .bin files on the manufacturer's website these days and the only way of updating BIOS is from within Windows via an .exe file. I know you can extract it but the files you get have different extensions and usually none of them is a .bin file.

Maybe some cosmic rays hitting it and changing a bit... Not joking, it's a very cool science fact but dangerous if it happens to critical electronics like it happened to a plane once that almost crashed (flight QF72) "[...]However, a fraction of these particles carry enough energy to interfere with the operation of microelectronic circuitry. When they interact with integrated circuits, they may alter individual bits of data stored in memory. This is called a single-event upset or SEU."

I also tried replacing the RAMs and the CPU but that didn't help either I also checked the most required signals like RSMRST, RTCRST, SLP_S5,4,3 and thay are all good and all voltages are present and good I also tried connecting an external monitor via HDMI incase the lcd was faulty but same thing nothing I am stuck I don't know what to do next

If the firmware is corrupted, then it may still turn on, as that's very hardware-level stuff. I'd go for the BIOS flash anyway. I don't know anything about reprogramming EC/SuperIO chips yet, but if you're getting errors when you try, that sounds like a busted chip to me.

I recently was updating (windows updates) on my daughters laptop and when I came back to check it, the laptop was in the middle of a BIOS update that was NOT initiated by me but it was seemingly part of a built in Toshiba Utility Program. This bios update bricked the laptop. Understandably, she was quite upset and I said I would fix it for her. It does not post. I have looked online to see if I could download a bios file so that a local technician could flash it as you have done. Unfortunately it is no longer supported. Model - Satellite C50Dt-B-107 . What are my options ? Anyone anywhere got the bios file ? I know there's good people out there.

Usually the folks in places like badcaps who've made backups will have two separate files. It's also possible to extract the files from official downloads when available, but I haven't looked into this yet.

Sorry might have missed something. Did it have 2 bios chips and why did the second backup one not activate?

The second chip was for the EC firmware - I'm not 100% exactly what is and isn't included in this, but I think it's Intel ME, and other misc firmware for the EC chip, sometimes known as SuperIO. It's _not_ a backup BIOS, as you'd see on some desktop mobos.

@@Adamant_IT Yep i figured i missed something as you would have just moved a jumper or it would take over. What really is concerning is that 2017+ TPM requirement for windows 11 which will put vast amounts of laptops into landfills if people want to rush to upgrade from 10 to 11. I sure youtube guys will find a registry ect workaround but MS should just tell you its preferred for safety but still allow you to install with only slight risk given how good anti virus is. CHOICE is something people /companies seem to fear/ Profit- APPLE!! hmm these days. Scary new world!! Great channel you have and yours and other good ones too always pick something up useful - Right to repair really just as it was before we all got wrapped in cotton wool and fear and rights were lost.... Maybe you can do a video on windows 11? good and bad from the test program released so far Many thanks ...

@Mr Guru Thats cool, so MS says if you dont have TPM 2.0, Win 11 will work but you WONT get any updates. So how do you get around the CPU requirement? so it all works and updates ect?
