I had knee replacement surgery in the past and I really have never been satisfied because the knew swells and hurts still. It’s be about 12 years, maybe. I swore I would never have my right knee done, but it is so painful that I have decided to do it. I was surprised to see the docs and PTs talk about exercises to do before the surgery. Nothing like that when I had mine. I don’t have stairs but I do the ones you showed on the side of the bed or in a chair. It hurts the most straightening it as my knee has begun to bend some when I walk. I also have a spur on my knee. It’s a mess. I am hoping that this time, with doing the exercises before surgery, that the PT after is more successful than last time and this knee gives me much more satisfaction than the left one.

Sounds like you're ready for this next surgery, Sandra! Doing these exercises now, leading up to surgery, should really help. Best of luck!

Ten months ago I had arthroscopic surgery which left my leg very weak. I’ve done tons of pt, but am unable to strengthen it. To make matters worse, I Reinjured the knee 7 months ago and have been barely able to walk even with a cane. I’m 47 and my injured leg looks like a piece of linguini. I want to have TKR so as to walk/get some degree of life back but I’m afraid a leg as weak as mine might leave me even worse off. Are there any options for situation like mine? Stem cells perhaps? Thank you!

I'm concerned that you haven't been able to build up any strength...is that due to the pain, or is the muscle just not responding? If it's a pain issue, I'd say the total knee might be a good option. But if it's a muscle issue (like a torn quad tendon), you have something else to consider. Does that make sense?

Gordon Physical Therapy. Thank you for your very timely response. I am able to work out in spite of some pain, however, the muscle remains weak and just doesn’t grow, especially in the VMO area. Also, since surgery I have had numbness in the medial and front of my lower leg and foot.

@@carlorocky you're quite welcome! As long as you have some level of strength in your quad/VMO, if you think TKR surgery is right for you to relieve your knee pain, I'd say you're safe to proceed (again, as long as your quad muscle is intact). In terms of building the muscle, have you considered NMES (neuro-muscular electrical stimulation)? This might really help. Let me know if you'd like more information :-)

Do you use different knees for this or the one the surgery is gonna be performed?

Great question! While this video is mainly focused on the knee that's about to be operated on, stretching/exercising both knees is an excellent option. Thanks for asking!

@@GordonPhysicalTherapy no. But it’s ok, I’ve found some exercises that don’t need steps. Just thought it was useful feedback. I’m in Australia where it’s more common for houses to be on one level.
