I don't know if you eventually figured out, but the upside of Goblin Hewers is that their crew is a unit of slayers, so you're intended to send them into melee once they run out of ammo or if they get charged by large units.

Boris got himself killed in my game, partly because he invited me to war against the skaven and I was too distracted chasing them through my territory like what happened to you to help Boris fight off daemons. :( So now I have a northern front full of awful environment settlements to clean up. I'm so jealous that you have a living Boris!
