I completely agree with everything you said. Thank you. It's not just a 911 gateway car, though. I have 5 doors, 4 1/2 seats, roof rails, and a cycle carrier. It's my EV, soft roader, sports car, family car. I love driving it, and I am going to stop typing and take it out now, just for fun.

James, it's a great car....it's not a sports car. Drive a mx5, lotus Elise etc...driving a light car is fun and sporty. The Porsche is great but hugely heavy and ultimately uncommunicative. my son just bought his first car..a 2011 Mégane Renault sport 2.0 turbo. It's a sportier and more fun drive than my Audi e Tron GT.

While VAT might not be listed on a second hand privately sold car, to say it’s just immediately excluded when buying a second hand car is not really correct. VAT is wrapped up in the depreciation costs over a few years.
@TomShorrock
@TomShorrock 18 күн бұрын
My point was that VAT makes a large amount of prices up, I understand it’s not listed but still included. What I was getting at is if you paid £100k for a car and kept it for a week then listed it for sale you wouldn’t get anywhere close what you paid for it

@@TomShorrock The vat on a£100k car is £16670 not £20000. also the £20k in options has £3333 of vat in it. So you're not down to £60k , you're down to £66666.

Im in the US, so some of the details differ (jealous of you guys who are able to lease Taycans through salary sacrifice schemes). Here in the US, unless you work for Porsche, a taycan will cost a minimum of about $1500 for a lease on a base model. And that’s after various incentives. But like you guys there’s lots of snobbery and misinformation being spread by people who should know better. Atleast here, taycans seem to follow a similar depreciation curve as any German luxury sedan. Not sure why people get so bent out of shape about that. And I’d be more confident owning an older taycan than a panamera, macan or cayenne because EV drivetrains are inherently simpler and there’s an 8 year warranty on the battery

I was looking for an EV for my family and by chance stumbled up on a Porsche Taycan. I was looking at an BMW i5 as an alternative which costs me the same amount of money but if we face it. If you got the chance to buy a 2 year old Porsche for the same amount of money you gotta be an idiot not to do so. The estimation that batteries depreciate over time is obviously true but so are ICEs. A used petrol engine doesn't deliver the same power as a new one anymore and there's way more parts that can fail. It's more the fear of change that keeps people from buying EVs and than there's the usual shit talking without ever understanding the topic. In the end it's similar to the stock market. Buy low, sell high. When everybody is in fear it's the best time to do so and the time for EVs is now.

What a honest video for once. No click bait crap which can’t be said for the Mac master. I’ve stopped looking at his channel because of it. I’m with you on the Porsche I drive a Kia EV6 GT Line S and thought about the possibility of buying a used taycan but the two things that made me not buy one were the service / maintenance and insurance. But yes it’s a fantastic car a friend who lives just down the road from me has the turbo s modal. It was raved by the motoring press when launched and it’s still the same car. Your right on options some can loose you money and others just make the car that bit more desirable for the used buyer. But you the new owner take the hit. Once again a great video thanks.

The issue is the car costs on average £100k and it only does 230 miles approx on a charge (newer version more but costs more). Yes all new car lose 20% vat. The other issue is the battery will degrade with time and how you charge it. Average range summer 230 miles but winter 20 to 30% less. All electric car battery warranties state the battery has to drop below 70% capacity before it is replaced. Some manufacturers fit reconditioned batteries and NOT new ones. A 93kwh Taycan battery is £45000. In 10 years if you keep your Taycan you could spend £100k plus £45k. You also can't take the car to anyone but Porsche to fix it. Cabin heaters common recall but after 3 years / out of warranty expect over £3000 to fix. It is a brilliant car but a lemon.

I drive a 2020 Audi RS4 & have been watching videos of both sides of argument. Around Dec 2023 I stopped at a service station in Dundee on way to my home town Aberdeen. I noticed a fellow Audi RS car owner. The gent had an Audi RS e-tron at the charger. I visited the service station shop & loo. Some 10-15 mins later the guy was still at the charger. I was keen to hear his own experience first hand. This is what he said - He previously owned a RS4 like mine however now for around a year owned this Audi e-tron RS. He averages around 800 miles a week. So has had considerable experience. He like me lived in north east Scotland & drives all over Scotland. He was currently heading back from the central belt & had stopped to charge his car. His car was wonderful to drive but there were issues. EG in winter the range is less than 200 miles. He had just spent 15mins on the phone to the charge network company who apparently did have his credit card details but yet he needed to load credit. This type of issue was not uncommon. He reported that in the last year of ownership he had slept 5 times in the car. Recently when stoping to recharge he had to go to 4 chargers before one worked. Then the charge was so slow it took over two hours. Yet again he slept in his car. From what I heard he wouldn’t buy one again as they simply as the car range & in particular the infrastructure in Scotland just isn’t there. More electric cars are appearing on the roads & there’s now less even less chance of getting a charger. Sure no’s of chargers are increasing but the increase of EV’s is much more. If you live in Scotland. Have charging facilities at home & don’t do long journeys. An EV might work for you but for him they simply don’t work. This is also where I have reached in my thinking. Maybe in the future if there’s a much better network of fast chargers + a genuine 300 mile range (not charge at 70 of 80 % of this) I’d make the switch however for now an EV for me is simply not a viable alternative.

This rep should have bought a Tesla and not an Audi - problem solved. And the car would have been ten grand + cheaper. Please don't allude to the incorrect assertion that "all EVs are the same" because the etron was a particular turd you could not even roll in glitter.

Thanks for your thoughts. Like you I’ve come to understand that Tesla’s have the edge on range. Can I ask what your thoughts are on the charging network, in particular Scotland? From what I gather unless you can charge at home. Trying to get around much of Scotland & in particular rural Scotland one is going to struggle. Even the gent I met described how at times it took a few goes to find a working charger. Maybe in time the network will be there however if I want to drive from NE Scotland to a west coast Island. I’m thinking I’m may well struggle to find chargers on route or at my destination. Let alone ones which are fast chargers?

@@SpiderMacKenzie We recently took a trip round the Scottish Borders, Edinburgh way and Berwick on Tweed. Up from Milton Keynes and back via the A1. There are chargers all over the place on the A1 and more going in. As for Scotland, we did not have any problems. We mostly used Tesla super chargers, which ALWAYS work, you don't need a special card or anything and some are open to non Tesla, but we also used EV power near the hotel [7 brand new 150kw stalls] and a couple of 50kw "Electrify Scotland" chargers we found in small car parks like in wonderful Melrose town. We did no come across anything that did not work. Amazing dead straight up and down old Roman Roads. We also drove through the Northumberland National Park via the A68. There were just no problems at all with charging. The car is easily capable of 300+ miles though at non motorway speeds. We just charged when we could - the Tesla car mapping has all chargers that are not "locked in" with special cards, but we invariably stopped because we had to, not the car. Maybe I have been lucky but also did a 1,000 mile round trip to the North West of Ireland and back - charging just was not a problem. Even overnight on a 13 amp socket at my Uncle's house gave 100+ miles. It is a differing mindset. I only ever had one issue public charging and that was a 50kw charger we found near the Holyhead Ferry Terminal - it started charging ok but stopped 10 mins later. We called the helpline and they rebooted it remotely and it was then fine. For some reason it would only give me instructions in Welsh but figured it out. I discovered later there were even (free) chargers I could have used on the Stena line Ferry. Finally, I strongly recommend a site like abetterrouteplanner or zapmap if your car does not have something suitable like the Tesla mapping. If you have to use a car for work - swallow your pride and get a Tesla, they are longer range, best charging, best value and super reliable. Local Pizza shops round here use Model 3 to deliver Pizzas and that is purely because they are the cheapest delivery vans you can get. I also know the popular MG5 Estate is well liked by people who have to drive for a living. There are also ODB2 dongles you can get that work with charger mapping [example TRONITY] using your phone or apple / android car link that will show your car range in real time and organise your route and charging stops automatically (Teslas do this anyway and probably other cars too). you tube video of someone going from UK to the boot of Italy in an e208 illustrating the real time charge data / mapping : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLt1qZuBvNCRY6c.html

I bought a Etron GT and it is a totally brilliant thing people actually walk up and tell you how stunning it is. Easily better looking than the Taycan with in my view a better interior. I waited until the dealership were on the point of not making theire quota got more than 15k off the new car and included the Ohme Pro home charger and installation as well as the Audi charging discount card similar to the Porsche one and a few extras on the car thrown in. I changed from a stunning 50 tdi A7 vorsprung and as much as we loved that car, the Etron GT is the better drive. I can charge on the octopus smart tariff from 20 to 80% for between 3 to 4 quid. I have no road tax to pay where as my A7 was £580 and I pay £700 on a 3 year PCP. I am intending to change the car at 2 years. Oh and I get free servicing! So Its far from a disaster and that acceleration and sound pack never ever gets old.

Your main points apply to all vehicles. (VAT and Optional extras) What you need to have done is compare the depreciation against other comparable combustion cars, that would be a better way to make the point - and I believe you can make good points in that regard, the Panamera is combustion Porsche which is similar to the Taycan, and those depreciate pretty heavily too... as do most luxury saloons in that segment. You are dead right about the incentives for new ones though - Shame its damaging the credibility of EVs in the minds of the public, if we let the free market do its job that would be much better for the second hand values. You also might want to have declared that Porsche didn't pay you to make this video. 🙂

This guy doesn’t understand how VAT works. And the nonsense about how easy it is to do long journeys in an EV is pure fairytale. If you’re a private buyer choosing a new car, don’t even consider an EV unless you want to bonfire cash. If you’re a company car user or a salary sacrifice buyer, you’re probably going to go EV because it’s tax efficient (and hopefully your other half has an ICE vehicle for winter use/long runs). The only time an EV makes a half decent proposition for a private buyer is when it’s halved in value after less than 2 years. And yes, they are disposable… if you drop £40k on a 2 or 3 year old ICE car, nothing can fail after 5 or 6 years that will cost more than its value to repair. If the battery pack in an EV fails or its range starts dropping to unusable levels (eg less than 200 miles in the winter), you’re stuck scrapping it, or dropping massive money on a new battery 🤷‍♂️

@TomShorrock Oh yeah, but they're cheap for a reason because no one wants them, not even the dealers want them anymore, especially now when insurance companies will just write them off due to the fact that the batteries cost more than what the car's worth.
