Great explanation. This is the best low voltage lighting video on the internet! Thank you. Before watching your video, I planned to use a 300W xfmer (keeping future expansions in mind), with 10 or 12 gauge wire, and two ~100ft runs, with 11 led lights on each run, where each light is 5W. But now I think I'll use 14 or 16 gauge wire and I could use a smaller xfmer depending on what I plan to add in the future.

THis is the best explanation that I've found anywhere on this topic (and I've looked everywhere). I have a 600W transformer and it has 3 long runs (from 100-200 ft) using 14 gage wire. My fixtures are all 3-5W LEDs and each line has under 10 fixtures. I have had 3 seperate consultants tell me that I needed 10-12 gage wire, or another transformer closer to the end of the run etc etc. This video seems to suggest otherwise. I love the scientific way that this was done and will go through other videos on this site to learn more. Thanks for the fantastic work.

@@Totallightingsupply Would like to ask another question. How do you use a multimeter to test for voltage drop on these fixtures? Do the lights have to be on to do this? Do you take out the bulb and put the probes in each hole? What settings do you use on the multimeter. I tried this last night with the lights on, taking out the bulb and putting the probes in the holes but I was getting nonsense results. Perhaps my settings were wrong or not understanding the entire process?

Thanks for the video, great explanation on using LED's, voltage drop, wire size, and the tests after adding more lights, I will now also look for a controller that can handle 15 volts.

Why are 2 lights in the middle of my run flickering? The light at the end is just fine and not flickering.. what is causing it to flicker . I have a 300 watt transformer

Could be the light bulbs in the 2 fixtures. Maybe try swapping the light bulbs in the working lights with the flickering ones to see if the bulbs are faulty or the fixture has a faulty connection. If it is LED bulbs make sure they are compatible with your transformer.

Just hanging the wire on the end and no connections is a complete open circuit. You could hang a wire from the earth to mars and there would be zero load.
