I wore one through all of highschool, I played OL/DL. It did add a lot more weight. It was actually a lot heavier then a helmet with a “regular” face mask. But it did help a lot from people shoving fingers in the helmet to jab at eyes nose and mouth. Or punching inside the mask when coming out of yoir stance. But I did see a TE go to stiff arm our outside linebacker with the same face mask as me and he broke his finger and ended up having to amputate the tip end of his pinky due to it being broke and messing with ligaments. I think pros definitely out way the cons but that’s coming from 18 year old kid. I’m sure the NFLs scientist have a lot more qualified and more intelligent reasoning for the ban than I could understand lol.

At the time these masks were popular we contacted the small company that was originally making them out of their barn. They exploded in popularity when Tuck and others started wearing the mask. They opened a manufacturing warehouse and were on back order for months. The owner of this company said Riddle got involved because they were the exclusive NFL helmet provider at the time. Because it wasn’t their face masks they said it made the helmets unsafe. It was all about money in the end that banned them from my understanding.

I’m not the biggest fan of custom face mask but if it gives you protection from players getting there fingers stuck in your helmet then I think it should be almost mandatory to have more bars on the face mask. Deion is famous for using the one that you showed for Smith. He used to use two helmets (when you could) during games, the one you showed was his offense helmet. Emmit smith may have come up with the idea, but the “Deion face mask” is that one. It’s also known as the robot facemask.

While I agree to extent but that’s really all about the paint job, the nfl’s is all about the face mask design, visor, and chinstrap, and they are way better looking than nfl goalie masks, the egop/egop-2 style face mask with a visor is the best design ever

@@PatrickThomasBrady Goalie mask are not as cool now as they were in the 80s and 90s. They have more of a cage to them now due to improvements in the metal. Back in the day it was basically just eye holes and some openings to breath. Friday The 13th style. Now it is much easier to see and hurts much less to get hit with a 100mph puck, but you can see much more of the guy under it. Making it less creepy and cool. Still a lot of creativity is shown in the paint on the sides. It's not like a football player can paint their helmet how they want. Around that time, I remember someone on ESPN mentioning a safety issue. "An opposing player's fingers could get caught in the small portions of the custom mask and cause an injury". Those who wish to wear a custom face mask should sign a hold harmless agreement with the NFL. If an injury occurs to you or another player due to the wearing of a custom face mask, said player should be responsible. I wonder how many players would want to wear custom materials if that was attached.

If testing and safety were the NFL's concern they could have limited the custom face masks to one per team per season. That limits the amount of safety testing needed while also giving teams some individuality.

Maybe I'm missing something, but here's my thing: Ostensibly, the harsh penalties for facemasking an opponent during a tackle are for the players' safety, because the facemask grab will torque their neck and cause injuries. If you make a facemask with gaps smaller than fingers, then it makes it much much harder to facemask someone. Instead of making a rule to penalize it even if it's accidental, why not just make it almost impossible to do?
