Getting your carbureted engine to snap off idle like an injected one, can be a simple matter of fine tuning the accelerator pump. Here are the basics you need to know on both Holley and Edelbrock style carbs.

Yep! Same here. Now I've learned the basics over time, lol. I still watch these though. Because not only do I learn a new thing here or there, but it also reminds me of things I forgot. Because as of late I havent had to tinker as much with the carbs because of the newer fuel injection in the driveway. Problem is, I still have my old stuff I like to play with. But since playing with tham has become rarer. I forget a lot of the little things.

Make sure your brake booster isn’t leaking vacuum from a bad diaphragm. A lot of guys think they’re brakes suck because that monster cam they just put in doesn’t make enough vacuum, when their booster has been leaking for years and the engine in stock form just simply made enough vacuum to mask the problem.

I was watching a video on webber carburators, And I thought the dude that was telling you how to make them operate correctly said ( Don't use that stop screw for tuning purposes! It's only purposes is to keep the throttle blades from coming back and connecting with the bore wall inside and causing it to scare or damage it when the throttle is released real quick as you displayed for us here on your video! And I thought that was a very good way to describe the function that screw that we all have turned the hell out of when we were rookies still learning! But I thought of all the grief that would have saved me through the years had someone had explained that as simple as he did! In regular man words ( Just crack it open enough to keep it from contacting the wall of the bore inside, And then don't f#%k with it anymore then that or shits gonna start going down hill real fast from there on trying to get the thing to perform correctly! 🤔

Love these simple tips that make such a huge difference. There are less and less people to share this knowledge. And for young people that have experience with new gen programmable cars..... The combination of any 5 or 6 of these little tips from Uncle Tony. ( sounds weird even to type. I'm at least as old as Tony lol ) , would make a full second or more difference at the end of the run. And huge advantage in roll on, in the street say. It would be the rough equivalent of that first stage one tune on an otherwise completely stock new vehicle. As in... no amount of money you spend after that will ever make as much of a difference. My cousin was a motorcycle mechanic with a fondness for British and Italian bikes, as well as cars.. And had a 455 Buick that would snap to redline like a 340 dodge smallblock. Was amusing as hell...

Yes accelerator pumps do help throttle response on a stocker or mild built engine on moderate performance engines mechanical secondaries ..proper bend in mechanical Holly rod..and metering block with proper power valve and jets works better.. On the afb-carter type carbs...I.E.) Edelbrock I feel jetting, metering rods and springs do most of it. On the street car..a stall convertor, rear gear ,matching cam-spring set up and proper cfm set up carb with proper timing works for really snappy take offs.

I've got a practically new holley 600 on a completely stock 350 and it ran great on there for a while but now it idles high when it warms up and has a bog on any kind of even mildly hard acceleration. Acts to me like a vacuum leak but I absolutely can not find one

You should try to find one of those old school predator carburetors like the one bigfoot ran on his truck, them things have some of the best throttle response.

@@johnsheetz6639 yeah, check out some videos of them, the way they are designed makes them incredibly snappy but they are rare and pretty expensive and are difficult to find parts for but they are worth the trouble.

UT.. i’ve got a 40 Ford with a Chevy 350 small block, no modifications with a Edelbrock 1406 four barrel. During the cooler weather I noticed it running fine as the weather got warmer it seems like it actually had to be leaned out because in the warmer weather it wanted to stall out sitting at a light for it hesitated when you went to takeoff and as you let off the throttle after going any type of speed over 50 or 60 it would backfire a lot out of the exhaust pipes but not the carburetor. At one point the idol was up there nice around 900 850 in gear it would be about 650 to 700 which which I liked because if I turned on the air conditioning it would even go lower but lately it’s Gone back to this almost to Rich low idol 400 in gear 600 in Park. Is there a generic starting point I could go with on that 1406 screw both mixture screws all the way down back them out one and a half turns or or watt and then adjust the idle screw from there because it seem like I had it right and then I went for a drive and everything changed to get real high idle it started that pop in again out of the pipes it was surging again while driving it’s slow any help there thanks JT...I just wanted to add the guy that works on my car is a real hot rod guy and it’s hard to get with him sometimes and with the weather change I had to monkey around with the carburetor myself before this kind of stuff he had it all right in that cooler weather and I know the timing and everything is good on it I’ve got a new transmission in it new torque converter new fuel cell so I drive it every day it runs great but that carburetor is becoming a erratic

Hi what about a flat spot at 4000 rpm? Then wakes back up. Advance sticking?

My 225 Lean Burn Holley 1 barrel '82 model 1945 smog carb I don't think has multiple holes but does have a U shaped bendable linkage. Can I bend the linkage for more pump? or do I need to drill more holes?

Not sure if you will get this. I have a ford 390 with a 4 barrel Holley 600. At idle she runs great but at higher rpms she starts to backfire. I just installed a HEI distributor and this is when I started having the issues. Do you have any thoughts?

on a holley 850 front squirters is there supposed to be a checkball under the squirter or just that rod? Since carb was new d.side of the squirter dribbles then squirts. Changing squirters same thing. Im lost...thats my hesitation when I blip the throttle at idle.
