Workshop: Pixel Mapping and Performing with LEDs

This half-day workshop for is meant for users who have a general understanding of the TD interface and its operators. Building on the concepts and techniques presented in the 2018 Berlin Summit Pixel Mapping Workshop, we will construct a flexible system for mapping and controlling LED installations. A variety of dynamic elements for generating content will be made accessible from an intuitive UI, allowing for a fluid workflow. These elements will touch on some generally useful practices such as 3D rendering, customized components, preset storage and recall, MIDI mapping, and GLSL. We will have some LED fixtures present for demonstration.
Instructor: Karl Skene
Karl Skene is a Toronto-based new media artist specializing in generative visuals, projection mapping, LED design, and interactive installations. With a background in electronic music, he became drawn to VJing and lighting design at underground raves in 2014. Since then, he has diversified his skill-set by collaborating on numerous large scale installations with Young Offenders and Artefact Creative for clients such as Google, RBC, and Absolut.

Question here, how would you alter the LED mapping on this network if instead of having each strip output to a unique universe, you wanted the same layout but the strips wired sequentially and output to a single universe, or multiple universes with each universe driving 4-6 strings wired in sequence? Does that make sense?

Hi, I am really interested in touch designer as I really like the idea of visual node programming. I was curious on the extent you could use touch designer for a game wise. So a game engine, I am trying out has a API and has addon system where you can make plugins. Would I be able to use say touch designer to make a plugin? Also could touch designer be used as a programming language for game engines like programming WASD movement etc?

I'm no expert but while you can create interactive things with the logic tools available in TD, you can't compile (I think?) and the licensing doesn't seem designed around distributing a commercial game. There are game engines that offer node based programming (Unreal natively with Blueprints, Unity with third party options like Bolt or Playmaker, not sure about Godot, GameMaker, and the others). Those are probably better fits for most traditional 'game' projects, but don't let that dissuade you from trying TD. I'm in the process of learning both TD and Unity and I have to say they're both awesome and inspiring tools.
