I was watching the first Matrix film recently and while the premise of that film is the correct setting for a tough action chick, the way they introduce Trinity is a great example of how to do it right. We start by seeing her handing half a dozen armed cops their asses and makes it look like poetry in motion, but when an agent turns up she doesn't even think about fighting him - she runs like hell and is visibly panicked. This is crucial to the tension levels in the film because it _shows_ us that the agents are a huge threat, even to someone who has been programmed with advanced combat skills. In a modern equivalent the female character would probably have wiped the floor with the agent and emerge unscathed with a smug look on her face, because most western cinema plays like a propaganda feature from the Soviet Union, in which we dare not send a message that contradicts the official narrative.

Dana Scully is easily the best female lead I've ever seen depicted. Granted, they have 200+ hour long episodes to build up her personality, but its been consistent since the first episode, which is even more impressive. She is always the most intelligent person in the room, yet it never has to be stated, its obvious from her credentials and demeanour, but she never talks down to ANYONE. She handles herself confidently yet realistically, she's fearless enough to progress a story by herself without help, but isn't reckless and will call for back up in the correct situations. If she's up against a guy, she'll poke his eye or jab his throat and escape instead of going toe to toe. If she is surprised or blatantly overpowered, she will end up in hospital, like anyone else. This keeps the peril and believability alive in the show.

The sequels jumped off the cliff of believable and completely shattered any ability to pretend they were in reality. In 1974, there was a one-season (unfortunately) show called "Get Christie Love!," about LA's first black female detective. I bought the whole premise, because she used her advantages (agility, beauty, smarts, etc.), and recognized her weaknesses. How did she beat the big goon coming at her? A gun, preferably, but sometimes another weapon, or improvised trap, or whatever. That made it believable: she didn't try to out muscle the bad man; she out-thought or out-gunned him. I remember being legitimately worried when some dude would pick her up and toss her like a sack of potatoes or even get his hands on her, and be admiring when she thought of a clever way out or had back up just around the corner. *That's* how you write a realistic action hero woman.
@Zaszz1
@Zaszz1 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this same premise works great when used in other circumstances than a woman character as well. The original Predator movie had the whole intro and first 15 minutes about showing us how bad ass these jacked Arnold led commandos were. Then the Predator showed up and wiped them out with relative ease. And Arnold never punched him to death with muscles, he had to use traps, and study the foe, and find a weakness, and even then it was a pyrrhic victory because his whole team died. The thing about Ripley is that while she may have been strong and resourceful, you can tell with how she demonstrates her maternal instinct in Aliens and starts to fall for Clemens to a degree she becomes more feminine and vulnerable in Alien3 and we always see how exhausted and emotionally drained she is in every movie having to become something she actually isn't innately.

Sure, she's drained, but I would argue that battling alien monsters should be portrayed as draining. If a movie portrayed that as easy for the protagonist, that would change the tone of the film and make it seem less tense. Ripley IS strong, she's just also human and relatable.

Ripley's strength wasn't that she was a badass; it's that she wasn't. She was an ordinary person who went through hell in the first film, took on responsibility (making vital decisions, rescuing the cat etc), then in the second film, was willing to face her single greatest fear. That's why she was a strong character; she was absolutely terrified, haunted by nightmares, and went into the hive anyway. Her fundamental willingness to risk her own life to do the right thing and protect others was what made her strong. After all, Aliens was fundamentally about motherhood. And yet look what they often do to the actual men in these stories. Usually they basically castrate them. They become Charlie Brown (at best, if they are kindhearted) to all of the female character's Lucy's. I'd say most of the time they are now depicted as either gay or bisexual on top of that. The only type of 'masculinity' on display by male characters is usually the 'toxic' kind and even that is often taken to ridiculous levels (steal the little kids lollipop for the fun of it type of crap) . Nonetheless, even if a toxically masculine guy is the baddie (lots of baddies are more like *puke* Kylo Ren) not only will he be comically evil or clueless, but he'll also usually be easily defeated by the 'strong, empowered' woman. This is how pathetic modern "strong women characters" are: Back in the freakin 1950s (20 years before Ripley or Leia ever appeared on screen), there was a cowgirl western action heroine: Dale Evans, wife of the HIGHLY popular cowboy Roy Rogers. She often assisted Roy in taking down criminals and in some cases literally shot guns out of villains' hands because her pistol aim was so accurate ("Nice shootin, Dale!" is what Roy would tell her, among other compliments). But here's what is incredible: Whenever she got around kids, that toughness would be completely switched off, and she'd go soft and sweet talk to them. Kids who watched the show absolutely loved her, many older fellows say they wished she was their aunt when they were boys. I've seen some of her scenes, she makes most "heroines" of today look like whining weaklings, overpowered, or dumb...and yet she was VERY feminine! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/grqeq7OS3a-1hHU.html

Takes about 15 pounds of force at a 45 degree angle to topple even the biggest man in a fight and I’m not talking about nut shots. Broken knees suuuuuck. Wailing on each other in a straightforward manner does give the advantage to the faster or stronger one. But a single over torqued joint lock can completely change the tide of a real fight.

The biggest issue with today's strong female characters is the mentality of the society & the policy of hollywood to not show any violence towards women in movies & tv shows so they write female characters in such way that she is literally best in everything. For e.g. there was an article saying Quentin Tarantino needs to be cancelled because of how much his movies have violence towards women, completely ignoring the fact this is the guy who made Kill Bill movies that had actual strong female character or how about Death Proof which was a complete feminist movie you know like Kurt Russel getting his a** kicked by women something which media really loves. If you look at the male characters they get roughed up a lot by villains but they manage to stand up & fight back, thus why we call them tough guys. But if you look at these strong female characters they don't receive any of these because they will whine about how it is misogynist & catering towards male gaze. Does anyone remembers Gail Simone's Women in Refrigerator or controversy of Game Of Thrones made feminists ? Yeah that's why people hate strong female characters & thus they fail.

In the movies, she was a crack shot and didn't dare going toe to toe with regular soldiers. In the TV show, they weren't allowed to show her using a gun for the sake of good too much, so she had to start beating up men and other Black Widow types, despite not being large in muscle or having spent her whole life getting conditioned to be a living weapon. Every fight I was like "do they just lose interest in stopping her?" when they went down. And the only times she really struggled in a fight was when the guy she was with also couldn't beat up the villain, even when it was both of them fighting 2 on 1. No. That's called being 'selfless' or 'self-sacrificing'. Heroes often have that as a subtrait , but you forgot that a hero must face danger. After pregnancy is over (and that's rarely fatal in modern industrial countries) most mothers don't have to deal with actual danger. Keeping the kids safe for most mothers is much much more about monitoring them and making sure they don't put themselves in harms way rather than fighting off hungry bears or something like that. None of this is to deny that mothers CAN be heroic it's just not a necessary part of the job description, at least not in civilized areas. Most mothers WILL put their lives on the line for their children (at least we can say GOOD mothers pretty much have to be willing to), but thankfully, they don't often have to. And this partly due to heros and heroic mothers in the past that made things today much safer and better for everyone.

The scene with Lynch's character lecturing Bond could work if it were setting up a later scene where Bond shows why he's a legend, thus deflating the hubris of the new agent. But I think we all know that that won't be happening in a current-year film where character and story are there to serve the chosen social or political message.

I think that people, when they see these movies, for some reason, think that its for them, when its not. It took me the entire Infinity Saga to realize that Marvel wasn't for me. 20 movies and hundreds of dollars later and all I liked about them was Winter Soldier and Iron Man 1. I'd actually question, but not complain about, the holographic displays that Tony made, and think about practicality, realism, energy efficiency and all sorts of things. But then I remembered that while watching Star Trek as a young boy, none of those instruments existed (at the time), but it inspired me to think about them and actually take engineering classes. So I gave many of the technologies in the MCU a pass, but still wasn't impressed with the franchise. In the same way, even if you think that these females don't exist in real life, the movie's intention is probably to inspire or empower the female audience. and that's fine. I actually know females in real life, in martial arts, that would probably lose in a fist fight to me, but can fold me up like a pretzel if they got close enough. A few of them talk shit too. So when I see a female, who isn't just trained in martial arts, but is a skilled assassin as well, and likes to talk shit, I'm not at all in disbelief that a female like that exists. I still don't give a fuck about the Bond franchise, I like Bourne a lot more, but badass females that talk shit wouldn't break my suspension of disbelief.
@Cancoillotteman
@Cancoillotteman 2 жыл бұрын
@@VonJay talking shit is one thing, completely believable. But then : - Don't expect the audience to root for the caracter : insulting the protagonist is with killing a puppy the best way to set up a dislikable antagonist - Those men they are fighting are not random dudes in a pub, they usually are massive trained hitmen and/or bodyguards. No matter the martial arts those women did or not, so did their opponents, and then it is back down to brute strength. Here are my two cents : if you want a women to be badass in those movies, don't rely on physical strength from the caracter, get them to outsmart or outlast their opponents. Determination and intelligence are not sex-based. And women actually have a higher pain tolerence than men in average. Play on those, not on the one thing which everyone knows will always turn to the man's advantage.
@VonJay
@VonJay 2 жыл бұрын
@@Cancoillotteman I mean, I'm not turned off or sensitive to characters, whether female or male, talking shit to the protagonist. I see it plenty of times in films, characters talking shit to one another. I see male characters doing it to each other all the time. Whether the audience roots for them or not, the character and their disposition serves a particular function within the script. A function that you're free to define as a subjective viewer. Yet you're interpretation of it only tells us who you are yourself. For instance, my view is that of a consumer of cinema and also a writer of stories. The following is my perspective: Many writers use tension or conflict between characters to hide exposition. That way "info dumps" don't feel like info dumps when characters are arguing with one another. David Fincher and even Spielberg use "Fractal Act" structures. Making every scene a smaller version of an entire act. Where there's a protagonist and an antagonist who isn't necessarily the villain, an inciting incident, Journey/desire, crisis, climax and resolution. The function of the antagonist simply impedes the main character's ability to capture what they desire. What's interesting to is that certain audiences may automatically identify with the black female character that's "talking down" to Bond. And in their eyes, she's a vehicle for empowerment, is for a moment the protagonist and Bond is impeding on her desires. In Jurassic Park, Grant and his girlfriend, the "protagonists" are digging up dinosaur bones, and walk toward their trailer, when the "inciting incident" occurs, a helicopter blows sand on their dig covering up dinosaur bones. They enter the trailer, and Hammond, the scene's "antagonist," "rudely" pops a bottle of champagne that the lovely couple was saving for a special occasion. Hammond's "desire" is to persuade them to see his new park, and their desire is to continue working on the dig. The crisis is that Grant will be used to give Hammond's investors a good review of a technologically advanced yet savagely dangerous park. The climax is when Hammond offers to pay for several future projects. And the resolution is when he and his girlfriend agree to join Hammond at Jurassic Park. In conclusion, I don't view character conflicts the same way that you do. I see a lot of rude an inappropriate behaviors between male characters, yet I am not angry with the way that they are talking. But for some reason, when a woman does it, it becomes a problem. We're all fine with a man or a woman shooting at and trying to kill the protagonist, but we're not fine with how she speaks to him.

The Protégé with Maggie Q is a great example of an actual strong female character without the wokeness. Maggie Q's character spent 30 years being trained by Samuel L. Jackson's character to be a deadly assassin. We see flashbacks of this. So when we see her as an adult, it is believable that she is able to take down men bigger and stronger than her. But even then, she gets her butt kicked in a lot of scenes and doesn't always win her fights. She gets shot, stabbed, thrown around, tortured and she needs a lot of time to recover before going back out. The movie did a good job showing that she could actually die in her world despite her skills. And she never talks down to the male characters. The scenes with her and Jackson, she acts like a daughter to him and there is a mutual respect. There is never a speech about her being better because she is a woman. She just wants to live a quiet life as a bookshop owner, but can't because people are constantly after her. She fights to survive. It's ironic, because we finally get a movie with a believable badass female action star and no one is talking about it.

There are two ways of making the high-heels fight scenes work. 1. Just make it cute, funny, and fun, with actresses that are well liked. (see 2000s Charlies Angels) 2. Hire women that were ballet dancers as their primary pursuit for at least 10 years, train them in martial arts for 1-2 years, and then the quality of their athletic artistry will make it work. You hit the nail on the head with the Alien movie with the female soldier. They pick on each other in the movie they respect each other. New movies female actors talk down to a male who is 6'5 270 then beats him up. When its like if we are in a truly deadly situation and a woman hits me or she could cost me my life, pssh i will knock a woman out. Guys if a girl punches you, treat her equally and knock her out simple. You are doing nothing wrong woman want equality give it to them

The best written cast of female characters in my opinion are in Firefly. The females in Firefly are all strong characters, but not in the typical, goofy, Hollywood way. Kaylee was utterly useless in a fight, but she had mad mechanical skills that helped save the crew more than once. Zoe had military training and had fought on the front lines in a war. She had developed into an outstanding gun fighter who did not need brute strength to kill. And she was a wife who loved her husband more than she loved her crew! Inara couldn't throw a punch to save her life, but she didn't need to, because she used her feminine wits to beguile her enemies. River was the only crazy ass kicker, but she'd had secret Alliance experimentation done to her. Rather than writing characters like this, who don't need to rely on brute strength to emerge victorious, Hollywood has instead flattened all their female characters down to one-dimensional dudes with bewbs.

I love that movie.. but River? Her acting was great.. but her fight scenes were total face palm moments. Especially when she was trying to take on an entire bar worth of male fighters. You could easily tell that she had Zero power in any of her simulated strikes. She could barely perform the moves accurately at all... and even IF she was able to... the moves chosen would never have worked with her small, weak, female body. I was able to overlook this, because the rest of the film was so good.. but again, you are looking at the Mary Sue character.. with the excuse of "We fed martial arts moves into her brain.. so its all good dog!" >_< As a martial artist of 28 yrs... such a concept would NEVER work in real life.

@@johndough8115 But you have to understand that Summer Glau is actually a trained ballet dancer. That's great for being graceful but doesn't translate into being a powerful fighter unless being specifically trained in hand to hand combat. @@Powermad-bu4em You didnt really say anything that disagrees with what I posted. As Ive said... her fight sequences looked awful. She should have gone though a 6 month or so training camp, to get decent at martial arts movements. But even then, the fighting chorography was still poorly developed, for a small females realistic level of potentials. Being a Mary Sue, means having highly unrealistic level of capability, without really having to earn them. Like how she was able to pilot the ship perfectly, merely by watching the captain, and never having any actual hands-on experience. Being a bit mental, at least gave her a bit of a flawed nature.. but overall, the presented picture, is a female that has unrealistic levels of capabilities. As Ive said, I love the film, and I loved her acting / portrayal. It was just the poor quality of her fights, that really grated on my ability to enjoy the film even more. There were some other things I didnt care for. I believe one of the dudes names, was a girl name, for example. There was no good reason for it.

@@johndough8115 I don't disagree with you about the choreography one bit. I just don't put her at the level of Rey Mary Sue level based on the fact she was a science experiment that got away. Is she Mary Sue-ish? Maybe a little, but she is at least charming and vulnerable. She relies heavily on her brother to keep her shit together. I dig when she goes after the Reavers after he's been injured and they're cornered. Great stuff right there. She definitely should have gone through a 6 month martial arts camp and then used her dancing ability to compliment that training. Total agreement. Still love that series and movie. The problem with the contemporary "strong female character" is not that they're female, it's that they're not strong. Actual strong women like Ellen Ripley or Sarah Connor, even if they had only ordinary strength, had character, courage, and resourcefulness, and they never needed to compromise their femininity. Exceptional women were the equal of exceptional men, and the audience never questioned it. Today writers think any woman can best any man, and that means random women can outcompete exceptional men. An average woman is no more the equal of James Bond than an average man is; 99.99% of men would get themselves killed their first day in the field if they tried to do what he was selected and trained to do.
@VonJay

I think that Ripley and Sarah Connor were well written characters and were both handled by exceptional filmmakers, Ridley Scott and James Cameron. We're in a stage of Hollywood, hopefully its just a long phase lol, where audiences aren't demanding for cinematic techniques, or persuasive writing to be pushed forward and improve (or aim to be) upon with every new film. Marvel is a good example of this just with CGI alone. But on the other hand, I've watched all of Daniel Craig's and Pierce's Bond films, and the things that he's required to do, as well as how his backstory if any complements present day striking character driven views of Bond, aren't persuasive and or realistic at all, imo. I don't like any of the Bond films overall, but I like the genre and the amount of style required in every frame. But Bond has never been convincing as a male assassin, the types of ordeals that he survives, the villains, the fights that he engages in, everything, besides the realistic gadgetry and the blueness of exotic beaches is absolutely unbelievable. But a female character beating up a man is supposed to be?
@ruthlessdraculigula1051
@ruthlessdraculigula1051 2 жыл бұрын
Well, maybe, but I'll posit that average men are closer to James Bond than average women are to average men, because I'm sure when someone's breaking into your house to rob and possibly kill you, you want those "average" police officers coming to rescue you to be men. The averages of men and the averages of women are vastly different. So different in fact, that women have lower fitness requirements for everything from military, law enforcement, and firefighting, to name a few occupations. And I would know. When I was at Fort Bragg for AIT, every morning for PT we'd go on a three-mile or so run. Those 82nd Airborne badasses would always be leading the way, about a hundred feet ahead of us (those guys were fast!). My Civil Affairs unit, which was composed of regular Joes like myself, was broken into three groups: the fastest runners (of which I was a part), the runners behind us, and then the slowest runners behind them. All of the women were in the middle or last group, and my group, for comparison, was farther ahead of our middle group than the 82nd Airborne unit was ahead of us. Well, there was one exceptional gal, whose last name escapes me-her first name was Christina-who was in the lead group with me. God, did I have the biggest crush on her back then. She was my Ellen Ripley, lol. I think I'm going to go watch Aliens, now. You enjoy the rest of your day, champ.

@@ruthlessdraculigula1051 My argument is that none of what james bond does and survives is believable at all. The amount of people he's supposed to fight and the way that he survives buildings crumbling under him immediately leads me to believe that I'm not supposed to take it seriously. So when a woman does something like that in a bond film, I'm not surprised at all. If it were a Bourne film, where the main character has "Lateral Thinking" skills, which permeates the way he speaks, assesses conflicts, a woman injected into that type of film that does what the Bond girls do, would force me to break my suspension. If a female outsourced her physical weaknesses, and or finessed people enough to bring their guard down, and then hit pressure points or was resourceful with items laying around, then I'd say that that's believable. But in Bond films, the female characters are as equally ridiculous as the main character, villain, plot and stunts are.

This has been bugging me for a long time. First, a lot of these fighting scenes insert stuntmen/stuntwomen so that in itself is a thing. Seeing these women do such impossible things in fights with brutes and usually several of them always makes me cringe. And it's not just the superhero movies. It's hard to suspend disbelief when I watch scenes like "badass" women kicking men's asses in woke movies. The irony is that it's acting, it's fake and surely even women see how ridiculous it is. If this is what they think sells the idea that women are physically equal with men, it's not a very good plan. My big question is what is the end game? If it were reality, I'd certainly not have a problem with this whole thing, but the need to push this message is so weird. It also could be done without belittling men. If the tables were turned it would that be acceptable? Nope, it is not ok. Let's do Starship Troopers and make all public showers unisex and mandatory. Also unisex swimming pools, gyms, locker rooms and bathrooms. Then we'll see some reality LOL! I am not advocating that though because I understand the reality of things. Also, lets not forget about the all female Ghost Busters movie.

Although I have physical strength, I've been around and worked wiith some of the most strongest women I have ever met in my life and I admire them so much. Political figures are trying to divide us when what we should be doing is using our strength together as couples to be stronger and resist the efforts to pit us against each other. Then we can start to change this corrupt world.

I dunno, having 90-110 pounds of person drive the point of a heel into your chest at high velocity would hurt like a bitch. That example in the bond movie he gave was odd, he focused on the dress she was wearing as if he had never heard of subterfuge. As if wearing it and make up somehow immediately made her a non threat... Sure some of the moves they do is merely for visual effects and general badassery but I’m not sure why people think that having your head rammed into a girl’s rising knee would hurt any less than a guy’s.

The problem is even in fantasy/sci-fi universes where you have people like Black Widow who are meant to be highly trained but still 'grounded' females taking on equally trained fighters etc and of course she beats them with ease, no challenge or difficulty. She fights them as gracefully as if it was a dance. Whereas when you compare that to the fight between Captain America and Batroc you see the fight holding out, there is a challenge at least at first. Hell the only times Black Widow has faced an opponent that overpowered her was when she faced The Winter Solider and only then it was to show how powerful he was as a villain, every other time she's beating fully trained hydra agents easily

This is a pretty bad example. Which non-mook has she beaten with no effort? She can beat no named mooks via superior training, gadgets, and shooting them. Not to mention she tends to ambush people. And you compare beating mook fodder with Cap fighting Batroc, a named comic book villain. Um yeah, that's going to be shown as more on par, when in actuality the idea that a normal guy can fight Cap as he's portrayed in the MCU for more than 2 seconds is laughable. Hell she get's her ass handed to her by Rumlow in Age of Ultron. They actually do a good job of showing her limitations. Can't comment on her latest movie (I hear they do a much poorer job) but there are plenty of examples of her being overpowered/bested. Just not by MOOKS, and even in those fights its a lot of catching them off guard and using centrifugal force and her whole body weight for takedowns.
