Andre agassi said the same thing in his book, he even gave specific examples of when he threw matches because he didn't care, but he never gets criticized for it. Think how great he could have been if he had a love for tennis

Seems like you didn’t finish the book. It turns out that Andre Agassi did love the sport of tennis. And even though Agassi did say that, it was after he had already won grand slams. Tomic on the other hand, has won nothing but speaks as if he has. Like they said, got too much money too soon

Remember when Agassi disclosed in his book that secretly throughout much of his career he hated tennis? I think Tomic is in the same place. Both spoiled and abused at the same time, just like Andre, he needs to find his place in life.

People who are trying to defend Tomic is absolutely out of their minds. They are criticising him for a reason. I keep seeing comments like "He is not lying" or "He is just being honest" Are you serious? So are you guys going to publicly say I hate my job in front of your boss and expect them to have a positive reaction? Wake up people that was a disgrace and disrespectful to all tennis players and fans out there.

First off, publicly because... well... he's at a conference. I would publicly say I hate my job in front of my boss and not give a shit about their reaction and quit myself. First off, if Tomic really doesn't give a shit about his tennis career anymore, whose right is it to judge him? Criticize him all you want but in the end he's not going to give a shit and shouldn't. If it was such a disgrace and disrespectful to tennis players/fans out there, then boohoo. Stop sucking on a damn pacifier and just move on with your own damn life. Letting Tomic's decision to bother you so much is truly pathetic rofl. If he doesn't like tennis, let him quit and let him enjoy his own life doing what he wants as should everyone else.

These people commenting here are not his bosses but indeed many somehow think that their opinion on him or othewrs matter. They don't it seems. He is being himself. Others have to deal with it. Not much different than demanding from Martina to become heterosexual since here orientation is a disgrace according to some others. She therefor MUST change her ways. She won't and rightfully so: she IS that way. And he IS that way and inspite of not being the most motivated and most excercising player in the circuit by a long mile (from what I have heard) he is still good enough for Wimbledon. So he deserves to be there and if the real bosses (those in charge) had enough they can tell him to sod off. Fine.

people also tend to forget that tennis is a sport that is based in courtesy and respect, esp, before. I still remember before in wimbledon that the players even bow before and after the match. Wimbledon is a tradition-rich event that such demeanors won't be socially forgivable.

Tennis for Tomic is like work for general people...+80% doesn't enjoy or even hates their jobs, so no different from a normal person with a shitty job! But the only difference is he'll end up being a multimiljonair within just 15-20yrs and won't have to work a day in his life ever again, while the general people keep on slaving themselves for their corporate masters! I love his honesty, he sees tennis sometimes as a job for paying his bills, he's earned $5.1million, i'm sure he'll double that before he retires.

Bullshit, most people that get a lot of money too fast and undeservingly, statistically, will lose all of it and then some within a couple years. Ppl in this comment section and their talk about honesty. Give me a break. If you came to see a play in the theater and the actors were half assing it with their eyes half closed would you not feel annoyed that you paid to spend hours watching ppl not giving an effort? He can be honest all he wants to. That doesn't make his actions ok.

IMO he can do what he wants. It's his career. Change the rule, players take unnecessary time outs regularly, admitting it wasn't smart but at least he's honest. That interview was one of the more compelling I've seen. Tennis needs personalities. As for the spectators, don't buy a ticket if you don't like him. Worse are the players that play injured or come into a tournament injured, the worst thing for the sport, from a ticket buying spectator perspective, is having a match cut short after a set and one break due to a preexisting ouchy. "Give the money back"...."take his money". Fact is these commentators are payed to have opinions, the stronger the better. I like Bernie.
@Serenoj69

"He should be like this and that.." No. Mr tomic should be exactly like Mr Tomic wants to. All the judgementallity etcetc. People have opinions, seems like Tomic knows very well how to deal with opinions: don't care. Good for you! My basic principle too in life. And it feels incredibly relaxed I have to say.

Has anyone here honestly not had a period of depression, or patches where they felt less than enthused about getting up in the morning and going to work? Bernard's mistake was to comment on this publicly, but he was just being honest. Some people genuinely are in a sport just because it is a job, or maybe they were talented as a child and pressured by their parents to keep making them money. He might just need to take a break and do something else with his life for a year, see if this is really what he wants to do.

Unfair to make a comparison between Tomic and a labour worker. Try to isolate the case. Tomic has been super honest and open. He's not in a good place and he knows. He seeking for help, not judgements. His a kid who has never lived the life of a kid. Not trying to patronize him but you Martina especially shouldn't be that hard. You don't know what's gong through his mind. We don't know his soul and what he thinks when he wakes up in the morning. I can think of a number of Aussie greats alone, that would've verbally "taken the lad to the shed" a LOT more than Cash did. Because guys like Emerson and Stolle and Laver, Newcombe and Rosewall and Roche, know what it was like wayyy back in the day, WHEN THERE WAS NO MONEY TO BE WON. It must have been like "crabs in a barrel", where you're just fighting to stay on top, somehow, with no monetary reward, until the game changed...and that didnt happen overnight. Tomic...you got your wake up call.

So he is just like most of the rest of us - doing his job but without the drive, hunger and discipline to be the absolute best in the world. He is still moderately successful and earning an honest living for himself. Most people don't 'love' their job and have days, weeks or even months where they lack motivation. When I think deeply about his comments, I don't have too much of a problem. Who is he hurting? He is not bludging off anyone or causing people pain. If Tennis Australia don't like his attitude then they should withdraw funding to him and not select him for Davis Cup. I don't see why Australians have to take it so personally when athletes like Kygrios and Tomic don't behave in the way that everyone expects or wants them too. He is an individual who can make his own choices in life - commentators and former tennis players do not have to interpret those choices to represent 'Australian' attitude in general.

well he said he faked an injury. he said he is bored on court at the biggest tennis event of the year. he totally missed the point when he asked if federer would give back 500mio. this is a disgrace and a punch in the face of those players who are fighting to compete in the main draw. these players do actually have a little bit of responsibility. kids are watching their favourite players. there was 0 effort. i don't see why so many people defend him. if you compare it to normal jobs i would suggest you go out there and yell i'm so bored during your work time. after your work you go to the local newspaper and say you are sooo bored and faked an injury. if we don't critizise that as a society we actually do have a problem.

I have no problem with his press conference. This was a totally honest assessment of what's going on in his head. The last think I want is to hear Tomic blow smoke when it was obvious he tanked the match. The problem is his reputation for tanking matches. If you're bored and don't want to play, then don't enter the tournament. Simple as that. You're denying someone else the opportunity - maybe a less talented but by far a hungrier individual. There are thousands upon thousands of sportsmen and women who would give anything to have had the opportunities Tomic has had. Despicable.

Richard Taylor he lost 6-4, 6-3, and 6-4 to a man ranked 27th-30th in the world. Whether he is trying or not, this is still premier/professional tennis. Again, how well he does, how much effort he puts in, how much he cares about it, is NOT your concern. He got there because he worked at it, and happens to be good enough to be there. Australian sports success is usually a waste of money, it cost us $5m per olympic swimmer for what 1 gold? In tennis doesnt it seem strange that they are all of similar character? Pat Cash, why dont you tell people about the times when you were showing up to a tennis much with a major hangover after a night of binge-drinking. I guess you were also unhappy of having to play a tennis match that day, yeah you would rather stay in bed. I believe many tennis players feel that way once in a while, no matter how much they love the game in general, although very few are ready to admit that. Martina Navratilova: Shut up! We dont want to hear the romantic story with "factory workers" that have paid to go to Wimbledon. Working class people cannot afford to buy tickets to Wimbledon , to see you, overpaid top-players, no matter how much they love tennis, they can barely survive with their income.

Agreed apart from the claim about working class people not being able to afford Wimbledon. It's not like ground passes cost an unattainable and obscene amount of money. One can get some great deals, however, the long queueing process is unavoidable and painful.

Maybe he just isnt a top player! I think he was given to much of a wrap! When i first saw him play i thought he was just average! He lacks power and intensity which are the greatest assets in the modern era! If he played 30 years ago he would of been a top player! He is from the wrong era in my opinion! He just does not have the asset's to be a top player in todays game style !!

Don't blame this immature dude. He is gifted, no doubt but had been totally abused in terms of making him a tennis pro by all means by his instable, twisted father. You can read almost the same words in Agassi's autobiography. Bottom line, some pros just express what many who experienced similar ordeals as kids of over eager parents don't.

So bogus, Navratilova doesn't have a problem not mentioning Margaret Courts name as leader of Grand slam titles, has no problem with people wanting Court Arena being renamed @ the AO, but she'll voice on a 24 year old wondering his motives?

Saying your bored and uninspired is one thing but admitting that you used a m.t.o as a form of gamesmanship is outrageous! Tomic is probably butthurt that his illustrious junior career didn't translate into a succesful career on the tour. Graft, commitment and belief; at the top of the game it really is the mental game that separates the good players from the champions.

I would fucking walk to England (and I am in Estonia) to play in a Wimbledon match, but hey I love tennis too much. On the other hand I don't like football but if, lets say, a team is willing to pay me thousands or even more to play for them I would give it all I got. There is no excuse for tanking. If you don't want to play, just stay home, simple as that.

If I have to pay back my Uni fees once I start earning a better wage why don't Tomic and other athletes have to pay back at least SOME of the money invested in them?! How is that fair? He's earning MILLIONS (as he likes to gloat about) and not giving a cent back. Such a jerk tbh.

Mr Bernard Tomic shows no respect for the paying spectators who fork out hundreds if not thousands of dollars on packages to see Top flight tennis and mostly these are working class citizens who pay top dollar to see the best tennis in the world it's a total disgrace by Bernard Tomic not to give the respect to the fans and spectators what they paid for to see Top flight tennis take a good hard look at yourself and ask the question do you think it's right to act this way on the tennis court deep down you know the answer and lm not the person to bullshit I'm just saying the truth wake up Bernard Tomic show some respect remember this spectators are allowing you to play tennis and have a comtable living love Anthony Fed ex lol

Well if Bernie can't really get motivated, then he just won't be able to give things in tennis his full effort. If he can't see his outlook on that changing, then inevitably people will urge him to quit the game. Balding, Navratilova and Cash are not wrong or out of order in what they've said about it, they're quite right really. Bernie's got to make a decision on his future in the game, he can't go on like this making vasts amount of money whilst not caring or satisfying his obligations. This is not the objective of a sportsperson, you take part to be competitive and to show the ambition that all the hard work will come to fruition. For all any of us know, maybe he feels he just isn't really good enough to win slams against the competition he faces and therefore, the heart just isn't really in it. It's all speculation on my part, but they are possibilities.
